I think it's enough to make a difference in how a season pans out. We've discussed this before and I know you and bobbob and some others think their impact is slighter than GMs and players generally do and that's cool.

What's all this nonsense that the first week of the season is meaningless, etc? Of course we can't call for manager's heads this early (and I don't think anybody has) but the first week offers a good glimpse into the strength of a rotation (or what parts are currently available) as well as the strength of the batting order and defense. It's a mere glimpse but it's certainly relevant. No one expects DET to lose all of their games, obviously, but getting off to a shitty start like they are is enough to question the veracity of their line up that's been touted since the Hot Stove. Willie had some problems (I recall lots of runners being stranded on the bags the last month or so) but really the pitching stunk up the joint.

And Will Ferrell as Lincoln. Kidding. Great read, though. I think it's great because it reads as fiction even though it's non-fiction, which plays into the story even a non-history buff can appreciate. When you finish it get the companion book (I checked it out from the library) to check out some of the landmarks described in the book. It's a coffee table-type picture book and I forget the name of it. Pretty nice companion piece.

The above is excellent. Check out some Peter Himmelman, too. He puts out music fit for kids (and has some specifically for kids- My Green Kite is pretty good). The SpongeBob Squarepants movie soundtrack is pretty damn good, too. Wilco, Ween, The Shins, Flaming Lips, Motorhead and a few others (Prince Paul's bubble tune is excellent). Beware, though: Spongebob, Patrick, et al. belt a few tunes, too. I also ike the School House Rock discs. The same as when I was a kid and now my kids like it too. Sounds like you're doing pretty well already, though.

I suppose I could put up my copy of Barney Fife's Guide to Life, Love, and Self-Defense.

Well, JD Drew is more animal than man, so.... But there were some gripes in the papers recently from players about the effect of the trip (that also included going from Japan back to OAK for pre-season games and then straight to TOR- 19 days on the road). I think it's a weak excuse but certainly may be a contributor to how shitty they played in TOR. Maybe even more mental than physical at this point.

Japan trip? Let's hope they're all just a little road-weary and will get into a groove this week.
