  1. Jesus came to save American Christians judge Merry Damn Christmas
  2. There was just a deep sense of tension going through the whole film. I had the sense I had during the opening scene of Inglorious Basterds (on a slightly smaller scale) through the whole thing.
  3. My mom grew up in Spencer County, just SW of Louisville. I looked up Mayfield on the map yesterday morning and it wasn't very close. So I was surprised to see CNN in Spencer County yesterday as well. Called a friend of hers and they were barely scathed compared to Mayfield. Absolute tragedy! Seventy degree weather and tornadoes in December. Some pretty easy dots to connect to big climate trends.
  4. Power of the Dog on Netflix. A dark, dark western with Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst. Highly recommended.

  6. I saw them Saturday. So damn good. Closed with an absolutely fantastic version of the Stones' Can't You Hear Me Knocking. I am, IIRC, 0 for 6 for shows with Amanda Shires being part of the 400 Unit.
  7. I hope this is true for me. When I look back to Royal Tenenbaums (by far, my favorite of his works), it's the emotional hooks of this dysfunctional family and a father desperate for making amends, if only for his own survival, that truly spoke to me. One of my favorite lines in any movie is, "Immediately after making this statement, Royal realized that it was true."
  8. Really loving this fictional oral history about a 70s duo.
  9. I believe it was this show (it may have been night 2) that Marc Maron referenced in his Thursday podcast. Pretty touching.
  10. Glad it clicks with you in those moments!
  11. This LP hasn't withstood time as much as New York and Songs for Drella for me. I've listened to it when people close to me have died hoping for some consolation. Nothing. There are a few songs that stand on their own, but as a concept album, it doesn't click with me.
  12. Hobo Johnson. Taking my 17 year old daughter to her first club show. If you've never heard of Hobo Johnson, check out his Tiny Desk Concert. I find him endlessly creative, funny, neurotic, and entertaining. My daughter can drive, but I told her I wanted to come, hang out in the back, and try not to embarrass her.
  13. I assumed it was either a new song or a new, weird arrangement.
  14. Awesome! Of course, classic rock t-shirts all the rage among teenagers these days, but this one is definitely cool. I saw a student wearing a Smiths t-shirt yesterday. Another fairly deep dive. I'll often stop kids in Stones, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Nirvana, etc. shirts and ask them to name people in the bands or 5 songs. They mostly fail. I always tell them it's worth exploring. The exception is a girl I have whose name is Zeppelin. As you might guess, she was raised on it.

  16. Hey all, I wanted to share my cousin's friend's wife's experience with the COVID vaccine and suggest some alternatives that might be better for everyone. I wasn't sure where to post that today. Would it be okay to share here??
  17. It seems that Michael Stipe is quite happy being mostly out of the public eye.
  18. Thanks for the details bbop. Water Works park is on one of Des Moines' main bike paths, so -- like a hundred or so other attendees -- I rode my bike to the show. This mean I didn't notices the protesters. Thankfully. That illuminates Jeff's comments a bit. So sick of my state. It was different 5-10 years ago.
  19. Listening to Star Wars on Spotify this morning and I noticed this.
  20. I can't offer much except to say it was a pretty perfect night. Band was in great form. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jeff, at one point, asked the audience if masks were tyranny or love (paraphrasing). Referenced Gabe's Oasis (an old Iowa City venue) before playing Box Full of Letters. There are few things in life that make me as happy as Wilco live.
  21. I kind of hope not with a strict curfew for Thursday's show in Des Moines.
