Anyone receive Tanglewood (Lenox) tix yet?

me too! -
While there's certainly a high-class element to Tanglewood, I think it's narrow-minded to write it off at that. It attracts a wide variety of people and gives people who might not get a chance to see the symphony during the rest of the year the chance to go, and to go several times since lawn seats are very reasonably priced. I have friends who live nearby who always get season tickets and take their kids to expose them to a wide variety of music. These are two of the most open-minded, culturally curious, fun kids I've ever met, so I'm going to say their summers at Tanglewood have been partial

I still haven't 100% ruled out going to Brooklyn, which would make it three shows in four days in three states for me. I know I need to make up my mind soon, though, so I have time to find a place to stay. I'm actually headed to Tanglewood Sunday to see the BSO while I'm up there visiting my best friend.

The Giant Pin is my favorite of their albums. I think it's got some of their most straightforward jazz songs, like Fly, Fly and Blues, Too, but it's also got a bunch of really lovely ballads, and in the middle of them, blending in perfectly, is the great rocker He Still Carries A Torch For Her. Draw Breath might show their diversity just as well, but I think The Giant Pin is more even. It was the first album they sold out of this week, so it seems to be their most popular, too. I need to find my copy of New Monastery. I listened to it only once or twice last year when I got it, and I've sinc

I was still tossing around the possibility of coming down for this show, but by the time I got home last night, I realized I can't handle another 10+ hour drive this summer. I'm going to head to Wilmington and Tanglewood and wrap up my summer of Wilco insanity with that.

You'd definitely better break it in half to make sure there's caramel inside. Otherwise, it's worthless. -

I'm going to be in Chicago in February, so I'm hoping for some Wilco or Wilco-related shows while I'm there, especially since my job will be paying for a good chunk of the trip I've also got a birthday that ends in a 0 coming in March, and I'd definitely travel to see a Wilco show on my birthday. -

I heard IATTBYH at Barley's in Asheville the other night while I was having a few pints before the Nels Cline Singers show -
Don't worry about it. I was pretty far gone by then, too, which I blame on you, since you were the one who told me about Barley's!

Here's the set list from Friday's show in Knoxville: Build Blood Drawing A Mug Like Mine Thurstonius Exiled Reconciliation Fly, Fly Sunken Song Jackieing (Thelonious Monk cover) He Still Carries A Torch For Her Confection Cause for Concern Dedication It was a nice little theater, and the show was fairly well attended. I asked for Thurstonius and Cause For Concern and was surprised that they played both AND Blood Drawing for me. The crowd was an interesting mix--the woman next to me was in town for business and just bought a ticket on a whim. I expected her to leave after the first few

The show was great. What I liked most about the shows this month is that they played a lot longer. Most places last month, they only played one set. With the longer show, I think Devin and Scott really had a chance to shine, too. I liked the Orange Peel a lot, too. It was probably my favorite venue of the week. Everyone there was really nice, and they had two of my favorite beers on tap. Here's the set list: Build He Still Carries A Torch For Her Fly, Fly Vamp Blues, Too Lullabye for Ian Thurston County Confection Exiled Attempted Something About David H. I feel like I might've for

I swear to god I'm never driving anywhere ever again. Today I had an old woman driving a huge Buick down the center of both lanes at 80 mph in North Carolina, bumper to bumper traffic for the entire state of Virginia, several huge thunderstorms, fog, and all kinds of assorted morons for 12 hours and 9 minutes. But you know what? This week was so worth every minute of it. I'm kicking back with a Hop Devil while I'm dumping the pictures and videos off my camera. I took quite a few last night, and I have setlists from the last two nights and all of that when my brain stops feeling like Jello.

My name is Maggie, by the way. That might be a little less awkward than having to walk up to every woman with a silver purse and ask, "Are you Three dollars and 63 cents?" There probably won't be a huge crowd, so you could probably get away with getting there a little later if you want. I've gotten to their shows a few times only fifteen minutes or so before they came on and still got right down front. I'm guessing it will be standing room down by the stage with tables in the back, since the Orange Peel website says it's a partially seated show. See you tomorrow!

Last night's setlist, from what I can remember: Reconciliation A Mug Like Mine Vamp He Still Carries A Torch For Her The Angel of Angels (on a borrowed Jerry Jones 12 string that made Nels very, very happy) Dedication Thurston County Attempted Blood Drawing Something About David H. I feel like I might be forgetting something from the first set, but maybe not. Every song had wild solos and improvisation, so they were all really long. They were all great, but it was really Devin's night in my mind. He played a lot more solos than I've ever seen him play. I'm going to be sitting on his side

This was the set list, if I remember correctly: First set: Lullaby for Ian Fly, Fly Cause For Concern Dedication He Still Caries A Torch For Her Thurston County Second set: Reconciliation A Mug Like Mine Thurstonius Blues, Too Confection They were wonderful, as always, even though they got in late, Russ the sound guy had food poisoning, and they could've phoned it in for such a small crowd. I'm annoyed that the Blue Note didn't even let the band get their gear packed before starting the techno dance party (and that the DJs talked through the Singers' entire second set), but it was sti

I'll be there That's the last stop on my Singers road trip. I just got down to Missouri today and will be catching the last four shows of the tour. I'm really happy for them that they've had such great crowds. I'm in awe of them every time I see them. Prepare for an excellent show! I'm not sure what I'm wearing yet, but I'll have a silver purse. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting in early enough to meet up beforehand, too. I never met a 72 tap bar I didn't like! I'll mention it to Nels, too, and see if we can get him to stop by for a beer before or after the show.

Nels on what's new with Wilco

I'd be interested in hearing that, too. Any show involving Nels, Scott, and Jeff Parker is going to be great. It's a shame Jenny Scheinman couldn't play with them last week, since she's stunning. I'm hoping to go see her the week after next while she's on tour with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. -

I actually thought of that the other day without seeing your post. That might be the only time I'd feel okay about Wilco playing in a stadium I wonder if they'd be invited to play during the inaugural festivities? It's too soon for us to start thinking about that, though. -
Nels on what's new with Wilco

It wouldn't shock me. I remember hearing What Light, Walken, and Impossible Germany the summer before SBS came out, as well as a gorgeous tune called Let's Fight that I'm hopeful might make it onto the next album. I liked the part of the interview where Nels talked about how Wilco is different from a lot of other bands in that everyone encourages one another's side projects. I think he's right when he says all of those projects inform whatever Wilco does next. Based on what I've heard from Nels live this summer, I'm expecting a lot of lush, intense playing from him for the next album. I'm ex -
Somebody sent me a link to this great interview with Nels published earlier this week on a Denver blog. He talks a lot about his jazz playing, especially with the Singers, but also talks a bit about Wilco in some ways I haven't seen him before (and answers the 1000th version of "So, how did you join Wilco?" ). I found this section to be especially interesting:
