  1. to wash that away, pull up a few YouTubes of Buddy on Ed Sullivan and that may get rid of nutty Gary for at least awhile. LouieB
  2. That was Gary's first major film role and before he was so nuts. He did a great job, although the film itself had factual issues. I remember enjoying the heck out of the film and it created one of the first major Holly revivals, that coincided with a greatest hits LP that you can still find in used bins today. As a biopick goes, that was a good one. Maybe not 100% accurate, but it seemed to capture the time. LouieB
  3. And of course Richie Valens, who was not the genius that Buddy Holly was and died in the plane crash with him, but certainly famous enough, only recorded for about six months. LouieB
  4. It may be that the best east coast style thin crust is at Gigio's in Uptown. The place is a complete dump, but make a great crust. LouieB
  5. Uh really...good analogy. I don't know what the material will sound like that we are talking about on this record, but I have seen Nels a few times do some balls to the wall free form and crazy improvisation. That kind of improv is very different from what Jarrett did (and still does.) Also I don't find Jarrett riffing on blues, he seems to have a much more classical approach to improv, in fact going for a more melodic effect than avant garde. Jarrett even had the audacity to say that some day his improv would be scored and played by others. Keith has always been kind of full of it, altho
  6. This was a topic of an earlier thread as I recall. I also have the box set. Not only was Buddy only 22, but his recording career was approximately two years. Chew on that for a minute. Some artists can't even put out an album once every two years any more. He put out three albums in is lifetime and a bunch of great songs. Admittedly it was a simpler time, no fancy recordings or extensive overdubbing. Just go in the studio, cut some songs and put them out. LouieB
  7. This week was a female musical death trifecta - Phoebe, Poly Styrne, and Hazel Dickens (who didn't get mentioned earlier.) all from cancer I believe. LouieB
  8. Actually I like the pizza in Boston the best. NYC is pretty good though. Chicago has very little decent thin crust pizza. I eat deep dish, but mostly after all these years I am sick of it. I think it is overblown really. Malnati does make good deep dish however. LouieB
  9. No idea really. Maybe the inprovisational aspect. Not sure. Whatever this group is doing is not all that similar to what Keith Jarrett did/does. In fact it has very little to do with one another. LouieB
  10. I didn't know folks still listened to that. It was one of my faves in the 1970s. Recently I got a copy of the Sun Bear Concerts, which I have yet to listen to. LouieB
  11. I suppose the real credit goes to John Boston and WhiskeyBender Productions. It is just so sad that their new material hasn't gotten a proper recording. Does anyone have any idea how Kevin Jr. actually supports himself? It can't be as a working musician sadly. LouieB
  12. And I just found out that the Dylan at Brandeis is available on vinyl starting May 11 for a very reasonable price. Guess I wasn't paying attention. LouieB
  13. I have her first couple albums. Wow, she was also young. Sad. LouieB
  14. wow, sad. She was really young. LouieB
  15. Where to get it seems to be a mystery. They can't even find a way to get out their last album, maybe it is going to be a download? The last time I saw them at the Hideout and Schubas not only didn't they sell out, they could barely fill either club. With the layoff from their last come back (which was a success) this one may well fall flat, sadly. They are great, but time is quickly passing them by. The Chanmber Strings story is very heartbreaking, but typical. I heard Kevin played last Saturday, but have not heard how it went. Considering I was at Lincoln Hall with Eleventh Dream Day, a
  16. One of my favorite non-English artists is Eddie Palmieri, great latin jazz/salsa bandleader/pianist. LouieB
  17. I stopped in at the Jazz Record Mart today and they had some of the Vanguard and other reissues still available. Obviously no Big Star. They also had copies of the Syd Barrett. What's with them remixing this material in 2010. I didn't buy it but I may go back and get it for the hell of it. Of course by then it could be gone. The Vanguards were selling a couple bucks cheaper than I saw them other places. LouieB
  18. Bought the LP at CHIRP for 12 bucks but haven't listened to it yet. LouieB
  19. She gets alot of mileage out of story, but it is a good one. LouieB
  20. while the CD may not be dead, one of the developers IS dead. From the Trib this AM. LouieB Former Sony President and Chairman Norio Ohga, who gave up a career as an opera singer to join the fledgling consumer electronics maker in the 1950s and later led its expansion from hardware to software and entertainment and developing the compact disc, died Saturday. He was 81. Ohga, who led the company from 1982 to 1995, died of multiple organ failure in Tokyo, Sony said. Some decisions made during Ohga's presidency, such as the $3.4-billion purchase of Columbia Pictures, were criticized as un
  21. Time flies when you are having fun. I am currently in the majority, but really I would hope for oomething intimate, but frankly I don't think it is going to happen. With the exception of John playing with Candy Golde this week, it is a kind of slim time for the rest of the band members too (Oh yea, Nels played the Hideout not long ago, maybe they will play there. Maybe this summer at the 15th year Hideout Block Party...Yea, that's it. LouieB
  22. I don't even know this guy (or hardly the band he joined...), but thns is really a drag. LouieB
  23. Actually two albums would be great. Separate the more adventuresome stuff for the hardcore and allow the more pop stuff for the rest. This is noe unlike what Andrew Bird did on his last outing. I have very high hopes for this one. LouieB
  24. Yea, really....!! I didn't see this, but while it is nice to hear about Jeff on national news, Mavis has had a significant career in gospel, pop, and protest music since before Jeff was born (or at least while he was a little boy). As cool as it is that Jeff has given her late career a bit of a boost, she was actually doing fine before he came along. She will continue to be a popular figure after the Wilco bump is gone. Just like Johnny Cash before Rick Rubin or Loretta Lynn before Jack White, these older artists can always use some help, but they don't exist because of the help they got l
