  1. Without him there is NO band. But then again who cares. LouieB
  2. That was going to be my comment as well. LouieB

A hit film like this is all a band needs; if this film had not been made these guys would have still been nowhere. I read about this movie in the New Yorker. A positive review in a magazine like that was all it takes to get a movie watched and promote someone's career. A funny sidelight to the movie; Lips was working in a school lunch catering service and I review school lunches. Cosmic huh (or not!!!!) This is a good place to promote the best movie of this sort - "New York Doll". If you have not seen it, do yourself a favor and order it up from Netflix or something. LouieB
  4. The death of the CD is greatly exagerated. (or however it is spelled... ). They said the same thing about the LP and it is healthy as can be (well sort of...) Sure the number of CDs that are sold will continue to decline as people continue to download music, but ultimately some consumers will buy recorded music like this because they like it and they are used to it. I mean what are folks going to sell at shows? What are the chain stores going to sell, what are the indie stores going to sell (some LPs, but also some CDs...) As for buying a download...I haven't bought one either, but then
  5. At work?? I have a vinyl copy of that...I should play it too, since I am working AT HOME!! LouieB
  6. Nothing wrong with male vocalists (Perry wouldn't be my pick...but that doesn't matter.) LouieB
  7. Lester Young Story Vol 3....no graphic on the internet... LouieB

I watched this yesterday. Good movie. LouieB
  9. I finally found my LP of this and gave it a listen. Very pleasant stuff with a bit of a Chicago twist here and there. I like Molina for being so forthright and lacking any pretence of irony. The songs are well recorded with vocals upfront and center, so that the words are easily understandable. (Not so true of the actual lyric sheet which even in the LP is unreadable...!!) I think this is his major strength actually, since some of the material on the second side (or second half if you only have the CD) doesn't change up very much and begins to sound pretty similar. I don't have any real
  10. I was just messing with you. The term "public domain" means that it is music that is not subject copyright restrictions, not that it is music that is seeing the light of day. I don't have a clue who is in the Las and I would be happy to never know. Just isn't important. LouieB
  11. Whoa kind of harsh. I mean the album is uneven and all, but not that bad. However I do think he is going to want to get paid for it, if in fact he ever gets it together. LouieB
  12. Yea, I agree. I am not sorry I bought it, since I had not heard it. As Brit-pop/power pop goes, it is top notch. Strangely in context There she goes is less impressive, but alone it is a masterpiece of the kind of radio fare that no longer exists. LouieB
  13. Uggh....These are both new material, but Gram sounds like crap half the time and the VanZandt is middlin at best. Both for fans only as far as I am concerned (which I am of both so they are both worth having...) Really great stuff. Well some is remixes and the rest I suppose you are right, but difficult to get. Either way it is a really good one which is now out of print. Way to make a market for stuff like this. Miles is a combo of the two. I love that Nels gets included in the notes to the Jack Johnson set. LouieB
  14. Okay so I listened to the entire La's CD. Not bad but the single still outshines the rest. Actually there is a second song on there that has gotten some airplay. Not sure these guys need a follow-up. LouieB
  15. Well if Shrimp Boat is in there, how about the Coctails box set and also the Tortoise Box set. Actually the Tortoise set was one of the best things they ever did. Also there is a Birmingham sound vol 2. (Do any of the Numero Group sets count, if so they are the best of the lot.) Aren't the Miles sets reissues? I suppose not since they are the original sessions without being cut up. LouieB
  16. If this stuff happens in JP what chance is there for the rest of the US?? (I was in JP just a few weeks back actually.) LouieB
  17. There appear to be a series of ongoing benefits for these folks. Upcoming is a show with the 1900s at the Hideout on November 12 and a Bloodshot show at the Double Door with the Blacks etc. on December 18th I think. LouieB
  18. Cool..I will see if Laurie's is getting it in. Good to see these guys on the same label as Califone...I hadn't realized that before now... The young Monk. LouieB
  19. Aren't the new and old times just a few years apart? I remember when lots of stuff (nearly all) started late and some clubs you had to buy at least two drinks (and the clubs had chairs.) Hell I remember when you could smoke ANYWHERE!!! LouieB
  20. Sidesteps may be new, but something that just wasn't moving all that fast. Cut-outs are usually over stock or discontinued, and in this case I think overstock. Or maybe they had some copies laying around that were for critics that didn't get sent out and were sent into the retail market. Who knows, but we are the winners; 60 bucks for 16 disks...you can't beat that. LouieB
  21. Blame it on VC!!! These copies were all cut outs. Mine came with the bar codes scratched. Now that some of those copies have been sold the prices are back to "normal". Thanks to all who brought this to our attention. Key buys!! (Again they are far less valuable at $50, everything is relative.) LouieB
  22. Is it coming out on vinyl? Just curious. The other two On Fillmore's aren't I don't think, but times have changed. Playing on one cut of one album hardly qualifies as being part of a group and St. Louis is nowhere near Chicago. (Maybe it is to some stupid person on one of the coasts.) Now that write up seems even stupider. LouieB
  23. Leaving out The Brooklyn Side by the Bottle Rockets is just plain stupid. Especially considering that the Jay Bennett album is unlistenable. LouieB
  24. Since we all started buying these box sets (including the excellent Fearless Leader) the prices have shot up. Bummer. LouieB
  25. I am guessing that is no longer true. I would buy it for that... LouieB
