Both are similiar to the other albums mentioned. Both are equally good IMHO. LouieB

I have not heard the new Lips, but Califone is small music for big people. LouieB

WILCO - 10/19/09 UIC Pavilion, Chicago Night #2
LouieB replied to EatMorePez's topic in After The Show
Post shower additional thoughts... Although most of us approached the UIC Pavillion with a bit of trepidation, it actually turned out to be a good venue and a good location and frankly I hope they play there again soon. The not totally selling out was more an issue of dates (why not Friday and Saturday instead of Sunday and Monday???) and the set up gave a nice mix of seats for those who wanted and needed to sit and GA for those wanting to be right up front. Having been in both, and hearing the sound from both, I thought the sound was excellent (not having too high expectations going in..) -
WILCO - 10/19/09 UIC Pavilion, Chicago Night #2
LouieB replied to EatMorePez's topic in After The Show
It is entirely too fucking early..... Okay, well, clearly Monday was better than Sunday. Sunday was perfectly good, but on Monday due to a half filled house and the off night, the band took more chances and seemed like they had something to prove. Jeff's comment on the fact that this was the first time anyone could have come to see Wilco was funny and true. There were whole hunks of seats open (the balcony was just ridiculous), but mostly I would attribute that not to people not wanting to see Wilco or to the large venue, but the night. Who books a major rock concert on a Monday night. F -
Actually the sound at the Pavillion for those of us in the (not so cheap) cheap seats was excellent I thought. Nels got lost at times and as usual the keyboards weren't always that prominant, but that is ALWAYS a problem. The band was really energized. The new songs did get stuck in my head and the old songs, wow, particularly Hoodoo Voodoo. Hate it Here was also excellent. It is not like Wilco is really going to surprise us or anything, but there seemed to be a good dose of Being There and all the rest. Nothing to complain about here. As usual Glenn is the MVP. I loved the comment ab

Self titled....which is their third album actually. LouieB

Not sure if hte somewhat bloated/too big UIC Pavillion will be that much better a venue than Union Park. LouieB

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.

I took some of my friends from Mass out to Oak Park to see Frank Lloyd Wright's house and studio and cruised by a few of the homes and stopped and saw the Unity Temple too. If you are interested in architecture, this is a good side trip. It can all be reached by el also. LouieB -
Someone at Best Buy must've messed up on the pricing
LouieB replied to jff's topic in Someone Else's Song
At these prices there is no reason NOT to get these. A total steal. Interplay looks okay too. What the heck...for 15 bucks I ordered this too...Now I have them all also (I just wonder if I will ever get around to playing all of them.) LouieB -

LouieB replied to jff's topic in Someone Else's Song
Thank goodness the music industry is in trouble. Their troubles are our gain. I just ordered this too and at less than 20 bucks also a deal. I do have a few of these on LP, but what the heck. LouieB -
let's be honest...do you really want to hear these guys write new material? Doing covers (or standards) is what most older artists do. It continues to be a cash cow for Rod Stewart. Streisand doesn't really count since she has only been a singer anyway and doing standards would be natural for her. LouieB

I sort of agree with this...and the answer is probably not. This is highly original stuff. LouieB

I heard them talking about this on NPR the other day. The songs sound pretty good actually. I will check it out. LouieB

For those of you who have been hearing us talk about Von Freeman for years, he is playing the Green Mill on Friday and Saturday nights. Some of you may remember that the Green Mill is just down the street from the Riviera (Lawrence and Broadway) so it will be easy to find. Von is 87 so he won't be around forever and the Mill is an interesting club in its own right. (I will hopefully be going to the show on Friday.) LouieB

No love for the Cicadas?? I love that album.... LouieB

Can't really comment on Tin Machine much except that they changed the cover art because of the penis pictures. LouieB

That quote is absurd and I like Poco. I don't know that a Mannasas box set is really in order....just find the old LPs...that is enough. LouieB

Open Road was a band project that was similar to David Bowie doing Tin Machine (or Rodney Crowell's the Cicadas); it yielded some really good songs. I have not listened to it in years, but it was a fave during college. I have a sort of beat up vinyl copy. LouieB

Someone at Best Buy must've messed up on the pricing
LouieB replied to jff's topic in Someone Else's Song
Once again, at this price the leader stuff is particularly worthwhile. I don't think have most of that material at all from the Prestige years. LouieB -
I guess I said this on the other thread, but I got to see Donovan in the early 70s. I like his Hickory label stuff particularly, when he was trying hard to sound like Dylan. I also like from his relatively late period an album called Open Road. This is long out of print I think, but well worth trying to find at your local used record store. (actually it looks like it has been reissued.) LouieB
