People here (such as me and others) can make bad, ill timed jokes and get away with it because we are nobody; all we do is irritate our fellow VCers. You are correct, many Israelis would say exactly this, but the fact that it is Rahm's father makes it ill timed and even worse. Rahm Emanuel is going to be the shadow president, that is no secret. For his father to make these kinds of jokes (or worse serious comments) at this juncture is simply bad news. [quote name='Đ

I am STILL arguing with my old friend about Obama wanting to destroy Israel, even now, despite Emanuel's appointment to Chief of Staff and David Axelrod's probable appointment to a high level postion. My friend stlll thinks Barack is taking marching orders from Jeremiah Wright. In other post election bad blood, Ralph Nader called Barack an Uncle Tom on Fox News. LouieB

Sadly this is not news...it has been going on for years. Many years ago there was an excellent article in the New Yorker (maybe 10) about the Mormon's work on geneology and included information on this effort as well. All of our ancestors may be Mormons at this point and we don't know it. Their reason to collect geneologies is to baptize deal people, including Jews, etc. LouieB

Needless to say they did announce this show, but I forget where it is, the Hideout maybe?? One of the usual places but it doesn't seem to be posted anywhere. Let me keep looking. This group rarely plays anymore. There is a cool Okkadisk release from 97 fo this group with Anderson. (and a pic of Fred standing outside the old Velvet for nostalgia sake.)I plan to make this and hope it is somewhere you can get in. edit- It is posted on Ken's website but no site. He has a killer European tour though...man. LouieB

Question about When the Roses Bloom Again.....
LouieB replied to CrushOfVeils80's topic in Just A Fan
I bought a copy for TG awhile back. I need to pull it out and listen to it again I guess. For some reason I always forget it is on there. I heard it the first time when Sally Timms did it in concert right before her album came out that it was on. LouieB -
yea, it is one of my favorite songs from that period. Tim O'Brien does a great version of it on Red on Blonde. (hey do you know GregRVA?? you both live in Richmond....) LouieB

Question about When the Roses Bloom Again.....
LouieB replied to CrushOfVeils80's topic in Just A Fan
One of the great moments was a few years back when Sally and Jeff sang this at the Christmas for the Kids benefit at Second City. There may be other covers of this. Someone else will have to tell you. When they discovered that the words were not written by Woody, it was left off Mermaid Ave. Great tune, good old words. LouieB -
Senor, senor, do you know where we're headin'? Lincoln County Road or Armageddon? Seems like I been down this way before. Is there any truth in that, senor? Particularly when coupled with- In this room the heat pipes just cough The country music station plays soft LouieB

Question about When the Roses Bloom Again.....
LouieB replied to CrushOfVeils80's topic in Just A Fan
Never released by Wilco, but was on a Sally Timms album. There is a great deal of discussion about this on some other thread if someone who is good at this can pull up old material. LouieB -
I had not expected this to be crowded, but it was. I waltzed into the Hideout just before the first group was to go on and all the seats were taken. By the time the first group did get started, musician time-about half an hour late, the music room was full and I eventually went up front and sat on the floor. The first quartet with musicians from Poland, Switzerland, and Boston was enjoyable, if not thrilling. Next up was John Tchicai and Hamid Drake. Tchicai's major claim to fame is having played on the seminal free jazz album Ascension by John Coltrane. Drake is a Chicago favorite and

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.
LouieB replied to LouieB's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
If you are coming to Chicago to see Obama sites, hereis a kind of cool guide to some of the places Barack lived and worked. I wish it had photos instead of drawings, but it still shows the places.... LouieB -
If everyone here wants to jump into people's heads and call them racists...feel free. For me, that makes no sense. LouieB

This is not about anything, just about the civil rights movement in general and we were discussing interesting and moving places to learn history, that's all. Everyone take it down a notch!!! I just think we ALL need to remind ourselves, ALL OF US, me included, that people have died, been beaten, been jailed, etc. for the right to vote and the right to vote for whomever they want and for whatever reason they want. I am just stunned that this convo went on this long accusing black people of racism for voting for Barack no matter what the reason was in their hearts and minds. LouieB

thank goodness we are back to RSGF threads...not a moment too soon either... LouieB

I have certainly been denied a job because someone of a different race, religion, gender, nationality sexual preference got it, sure. That is not exactly what affirmative action is, but then I am not going to argue this anymore. If you can prove you have been discriminated based on any of these issues you can file a claim with the EEOC or an equivalent state agency. Or you can sue. I discussed the voting by African Americans for Barack because he is African American being racist with an African American coworker and she looked at me like I was nuts. So did my white coworkers.....none of t

Aw come on now....when we zeroed in on the racism issue he switched over to class. That's not right and no I am NOT insulting you, but fess up......aren't your african american coworkers damn proud of Barack? And no he doesn't have to come here, but Chicago is a pretty damn interesting place isn't it? I know they have non-whites in FLA, so all he needs to do is go talk to them. Afirmative action is not racist....period.....not if it is done correctly. Likewise my joke about dropping him on the southside is also a joke, and my attempts to lighten this convo up a bit are clearly now
-
yea right....let's drop him at 75th and Jeffery or 43rd and King or Chatham or Roseland.... LouieB

I keep saying I am done, but then I keep reading this crazy shit. Class is (needless to say) an important factor, but it doesn't account for why the south went from solidly Democratic to soldily Republicans after the Democrats passed the Civil Rights Act. Honestly read Taylor Branch's books (or any book for that matter) and you won't fall back on all these platitudes. LouieB

No because she was a female and hot.... (this IS a joke..okay...!!) Is affirmative action racist...Yes IF IF IF you totally divorce it from slavery, institutional racism, legal barriers to people of color, de facto segregation, etc. etc. If it is a way to right racial injustice...OF COURSE NOT (unless you are die in the wool racist who doesn't care what happened in the past and that everyone is on their own...)
