  1. Hell why not. I am usually sort of luke warm on the dinosaur bands, but this is the Who after all and they won't be bad. LouieB
  2. I just love how the pundets, both right and left have decided that the Obama administration is a disaster and the guy isn't even president yet. I was listening to Democracy Now and they were freaked out too. I would rather take a wait and see attitude before freaking out. Sure some of the same folks are back in play, but that always happens in government. Did people really think it wouldn't? Pretty naive. LouieB
  3. The other night I was out to dinner with a friend my age (a year older actually) and we were decrying the fact that no one listens to radio anymore for the music. While CKLW had a really short play list, it was still plenty fun to listen to. It blasted out all over the upper midwest. They played a bit too much Motown, but then that was their market. I just love the screwy, loud format. It is so far out of style now. It sure does remind me of my youth. LouieB

the Onion gave it an A- and it doesn't seem to be a joke.... LouieB
  5. Strangely not even that many people in Chicago know about them, at least non-music type people. I was with someone yesterday (way younger than me) who said she had not yet investigated their music. But obviously MORE people know about them here than other places. LouieB
  6. bumping this again..Rosie is filling in this AM until 9 so you can hear her when you are awake. Played the Popes, the Smiths and some female jazz singer. Not sure who....Sister Rosetta Tharpe I do believe.... and then Ryan Adams..sounding like someone else as usual. Robyn Hitchcock... Here is the link to the station LouieB
  7. Jay and I have had some off board dealings....congrats. I too have been married 25 years this month as well. LouieB
  8. Yea, that would be it. I didn't get the whole post-post modern thing I guess that an out of tune guitar signifies heartbreak, etc. My bad.... sort of an Ornette Coleman slightly off tune avant effect. Got it. LouieB
  9. Not exactly sure what people want...... LouieB
  10. A 10 it is...but I think I am still happy with my old vinyl copy which has been spun a million times... LouieB
  11. Uh okay..not seeking perfection here, but since I am not a musician, hearing an out of tune guitar needs to be pretty far out of tune for me to pick it out. I am all in favor of lo-fi low budget DIY recording....just saying...if you over dub yourself to the point of sounding like a choir it might also be possible to get a tuner, that's all. What else did he have to do sitting in that cabin all those months. Honestly I am not being picky about the production per se. LouieB
  12. I can see that it is multi-tracked and I believe it. That doesn't mean that the overdubbing doesn't get a bit old. Also the guitar seems to need tuning part of the time.... LouieB
  13. This is a weird album. I picked up a copy of it in the recent past. I don't know how well it works really. Soprano is certainly a difficult instrument, but one highly favored by the avant gard. I suppose the most famous peice done on soprano is Coltrane's My Favorite Things, which is somewhat shrill and somewhat thrilling all at the same time. The AACM folks like Roscoe Mitchell play(ed) something called a sopranino which is even smaller than a soprano sax and is even higher and shriller. This is kind of a cool sax chart. LouieB
  14. This reminds me of the SAT or ACT, some questions are way easy and some way hard and tricky. LouieB

I suppose I am just curious enough that I would like to hear this train wreck for myself, but I am way too lazy to go to the stream. LouieB

Wow, this sucker is finally out. Now I can continue to ignore it. It sounds dreadful. LouieB
  17. Took me a minute to get this, which is why I am not taking that civics test at this point... LouieB
  18. Not taking this until I am way more awake....(It's been a long time since I was in school...) LouieB
  19. There is an undeniable feeling that many of the songs are "throwaways" to be sure. But then again that is sort of the fun of it. USSR is a joke and a pastiche of the Beach Boys. It was far funnier when the USSR was a going concern. Now people are likely to wonder what the USSR was. LouieB
  20. While this is true, Arlington Heights does have some pluses, such as the affore mentioned closeness to Ikea/Woodfield and the Japanese mall, a groovy racetrack, a downtown that was recently redevelped with nice restaurants and theaters, more affordable housing prices than Naperville, very good schools, and a diverse community. I have probably forgotten a thing or two, and while I am not moving there, I would choose Arlington Heights over Naperville if I had to choose. LouieB
  21. This convo should be in the what to do in Chicago thread actually. Both Evanston and Oak Park are inner ring suburbs that I mention there and are definitely worth visiting. Both are close and have great stuff to do and even some night life. Both are very diverse as well. I am particularly a fan of Evanston (and there are places to stay there too) since I live a mile or so from its border and have spent alot of time there. Naperville, being on the far edge (though not as far as it used to be with much development going in in Kane, Lake and even McHenry and DeKalb counties) and isn't the ki
  22. Well yea, but that is not quite the point. No one can meet everyone's expectations, it is impossible. So that just needs to be built into the next four years. Clearly Ralph Nader can't meet anyone's expectations since he can't get himself elected president. It is all bullshit in thin air for him. He can say whatever he wants but he doesn't actually have to DO anything so there is no danger that he will ultimately contradict himself. At this point admiring Ralph Nader because he says the right things is really no consolation at all. He is just a guy who knows what to say, nothing more. (
  23. It's 11:15 on Saturday night and I am up alone in the basement reorganizing some LPs that were displaced when we had our livingroom painted and I was sorting through the albums I have yet to listen to and sure enough, as I am sorting out the jazz and I found Diary by Ralph Towner. I guess I got it somewhere along the way recently and lost it in the pile. It has a 49 cents tag on it. I guess it was a resale buy. I just put it on and it sounds pretty good. Well all right.... LouieB
  24. He's become such a whinny motherfucker though... he couldn't win, he lost, and now he won't lend a hand. He's a loser..... LouieB
