  1. Do ask the question up there so we can get some discussion about this for the long haul. While there is agreement on Schubas and the Hideout, there may be some venues worth checking out that have not been given their due. LouieB
  2. Twice....totally ridiculous..... Now if they want to give it for free...........I am sure someone will give it a good home... LouieB
  3. At least this person had a specific question for a change and since they are from England I sent them a personal message to look at the what to do in Chicago thread. We certainly agree on the top clubs, with the Hideout beating out Schubas on some nights (in terms of friendliness) and Schubas beating out the Hideout in terms of bookings, while the Bottle has great stuff, go for the atmosphere. Maybe we can pick this back up under the other thread and get more input, since everyone has their favorite clubs and we really have not talked about that there yet. The new Bottom Lounge opened, etc
  4. Clearly Pitchfork loves both Spoon and Mission of Burma, both of whom have performed in years past. Incidently it may rain. LouieB
  5. Actually I have far stronger words for this person. First time poster, not a fan, willing to try and make money on a band momento which isn't really worth anything; this is a new low. You never should have taken the drumstick if you didn't really want to keep it. Some other fan will love it like crazy. Selling this is ridiculous... LouieB
  6. I'll be there...Rick and Laurie have my ticket I hope.... LouieB
  7. Yup, I will be there, so look for me in the record tent all three days, but I will also be catching the music as well. Too bad there seem to be none of the Chicago avant/improv acts of the past. But the schedule sure is packed.... LouieB
  8. Gonna check this guy out at P-fork this weekend... LouieB
  9. Hey Leo..was just thinking about you.... LouieB
  10. Seems a bit hard to believe however....both S&G and Simon's solo work are still played on radio fairly frequently. My sister bough Sounds of Silence when it came out and I remember going into the newly opened Record Revolution on Coventry Rd. in Cleveland Heights and buying Bridge Over Troubled Water when there were only a handful of albums being sold because they had just opened. 11. Jon performed a Bloodshot kids show at the Empty Bottle when Rosie was still a pre-teen, which was at least 10 years ago(probably more.) He did some kids shows at the Hideout as well. Jon never passes up an opportunity to play for anyone which is a good thing I think. LouieB
  12. At the moment I am. I am so luke warm you never know. Albany Park is a fun neighborhood, but not so much for those looking for a tourist type experience. But if you want to check out a myriad of ethnic type stuff, it is the place to be. It is alot like Uptown, but without the tension between the rehabbers and group homes and street people. In fact at this point the ethnic mix in Albany Park is far greater than Uptown and the dining opportunties and grocery stores more diverse as well. LouieB
  13. Should be plenty of used copies around....it was a huge seller, both on vinyl and CD. Don't know how I forgot about this one, it produced several hit singles and was his last really big seller (Rhythm of the Saints is also a good album, although One Trick Pony wouldn't be my first choice.....not a good movie BTW....) LouieB
  14. Sorry I read the schedule wrong, which is why it makes sense for people to google this themselves. Hope it went well. LouieB
  15. Heck I wouldn't ever go see the Eagles...but then again I wouldn't ever go see Billy Joel either...although I am sure the Shea Stadium shows will be fun in a weird sort of way. LouieB
  16. I wasan't there...I was at the Hideout the next two nights however.....but Tim said it was crazy packed out and that the show was great. LouieB
  17. Start with Simon and Garfunkel first and then to on to Rhymin Simon. I am sure the Greatest hits packages are pretty good too. S&Gs albums 2-5 are certainly all worth it. I would go early rather than late on Paul's solo career however. LouieB
  18. It looks like Billy Joel is sending Shea Stadium out in style with a couple shows. Anyone going? LouieB
  19. This was fun...very fun. After a night at the Hideout seeing the Wacos and Burlington Welsh Chorus, I went back the next night to see this. I caught most of Adam Fitz's set, who was completely on. Then into a long stretch of the three vintage soul singers backed by the Checkmates. First off was Wiley and the Checkmates, who burned it up, followed by Harvey Scales who told funny and somewhat off color stories about his various soul pals and then finally Ralph "Soul" Jackson, screaming and singing like crazy. Towards the end of the night a bachlorette party of some sort showed up so the enti
  20. 5 PM. Saturday.....better hustle. LouieB
  21. As much as I keep hating to talk about this...(yea right), I had a food epiphany yesterday in Albany Park, where I ate twice. You could spend two weeks just in Albany Park and never eat at the same place twice. The epicenter of Albany Park is Kedzie and Lawrence so you can get to this neighborhood fairly easily off one of the stops on the Brown Line. The stretch along Kedzie, north and south of Lawrence has great middle eastern places, both fancy and fast food oriented. There are bakeries and butchers and all sorts of cool middle eastern stores. West of Kedzie on Lawrence is the Korean are
  22. This is kind of interesting...from the Trib. (Incidently the ending is cut off, not by me... but by the Trib website.) LouieB Obama has long backed faith charities Despite criticism, Jackson took funds By Bob Secter and Ray Gibson | Chicago Tribune reporters 9:24 AM CDT, July 12, 2008 As a state senator from the South Side, Barack Obama once arranged for a $200,000 state grant to jump-start an urban venture capital fund for a non-profit group run by Rev. Jesse Jackson. The grant was the very sort of faith-based initiative now at the center of an uncomfortable rift between Jackson and
  23. The best thing I can say about the House of Blues in Chicago is it has the best bathrooms of any club in town (and maybe the worst audience....) The Horseshoe is really buying up ad time like crazy on the Chicago TV stations, so I am sure it is doing well. I would see Elton there. LouieB
