  1. Sounds like a rumor to get folks to go to what has become a somewhat anemic line-up in recent years. LouieB
  2. I find the Shepards Dog kind of boring..the rest is pretty good though. LouieB
  3. This is part one on the Chamber Strings...there are three other parts. I have this horrible feeling that the Chamber Strings time has passed. The competition out there is fierce. LouieB
  4. Really odd is right. Some of the songs are downright disturbing. Often Chicago groups of the Bloodshot/Hideout variety cover their tunes. The imagery and the story lines can stick in the back of your mind and be upsetting when you think about them. Yea Jeff sings with them and gets a thanks for loaning them equipment as I recall on that album. (Hey Paul...long time no see.) LouieB
  5. Yep I have heard it at shows. You may want to go to GloNo and watch the material over there that Whiskey Bender put up. I have not been given the demos, but I hear they are very good. LouieB
  6. I go through periods of listening to the Handsome Family. Recently I picked up an early album by them and one of their most recent efforts (Last Days of Wonder) and frankly these guys put out the most consistantly weird, tuneful, and original (in a fairly derivative way) music I know. All done on a Mac pretty much. They may not be to everyone's taste, but they are fun as hell to listen to. The Handsome Family is my vote for a collaboration with Jeff Tweedy some day when he wants to duet with people. LouieB
  7. Not exactly...they have been shopping a demo around with no luck last I heard. Then again things could change. I hope so. The new material is very good. LouieB
  8. I was checking on the Hideout's website after bbop got on and publicized the Rabbitt Factory summer review. I had not checked out their calendar in awhile and it looks like Tim Rutili's previous group before Califone is playing next Thursday July 10. Anyone got any insight into what happened that this group is back together? LouieB
  9. I will try and go. I keep missing these events; I will try and make this one if possible. John Ciba is a great guy and rescueing these sides and these musicians from obscurity is really good work. LouieB
  10. Damn-it..I am supposed to be working at home today..... Just in case anyone was wondering what I am doing here during the day for a change. At noon I am on vacation. Aqualung and many of the songs on it have been classic rock staples for so long that it would seem that a reissue of it would be in order. The later JT albums I managed to collect from resale shops (including the original version of Thick as a Brick... ) and none of them did for me what the first four did. LouieB
  11. Oh yea.....all were great. By the time Aqualung came out they were a huge act and never quite the same again, but the first three were the best of what later came to be known as "progressive rock" or now known pejoratively "prog rock". FYI I was in college when these all came out so very long ago. Yea, Ian used to dump on Martin, but that was after he forced out Mick Abrahams (who I did not see) who started Blodwyn Pig. Martin Barre was an excellent guitarist however. LouieB
  12. Yea, the last time I saw the Chamber Strings they were still stuggling. I hope they can finally get out their new album, well maybe they need to record it first... Incidently the Smoking Popes have a new album out that is very good. Their set at the Belmont Arts and Music fest Sunday night was incredibly fun and good. LouieB
  13. Yea, I would guess that is probably true. JT (that's Jethro Tull not Jeff Tweedy) gets alot of negative press these days, but their first few albums were some of the first I had and I played the grooves out of them. A rock group with a flute was pretty cool. Offshoot group Blodwyn Pig was pretty good too. I just remember Ian Anderson treating the lead guitarist like shit. LouieB
  14. I was thinking of mentioning these guys too, luckily they are still alive. I saw them when Brother Ray was fairly young so it must have been at least 12-14 years ago. They played a side stage at Blues Fest. We stood there in the light rain and watched the two of them play the hits and some other stuff. It was really a moving show. Sadly I stretched Brother Ray only so far and we left before the very end, but seeing them was extremely special all in all. I am sure they do the same show all the time, but if you get a chance to see them, do it. (The album out a few years back of them playin
  15. Yea, for sure.....they have a defined sound that has been there and continues to be there. I had not seen them until a few years ago. Actually I saw Prewitt and Prekop do a duet show at OTS and then I realized who was doing what. Whoa, Wikipedia already has this new album on the list of albums, apparently it is called Car Alarm and they have the track listing. Not due out until October. LouieB
  16. Not really so astounding....they were all still alive at that point. Actually I saw all kinds of folks (with the emphasis on folks) including Sandy Denny with Fairport Convention. As mentioned before, telling these stories out of context gets pretty boring. But there was a fantastic club in Evanston called Amazingrace that was originally a coffee house on the Northwestern campus and then moved off to a club they designed where you sat on the floor (carpeted) or found a seat in the back. There was a nice balcony too. We would go see people there at least once or twice a month. it was like
  17. I have mentioned this before, but Dave Van Ronk said that Dylan was a sloppy songwriter, in that he rarely edited himself. I guess if it turns out okay the first time then so be it. Other times it may not really be a song. LouieB
  18. Look for Obama too keep drifting to the middle until the election. .... keep sending him money...remember at least the Supreme Court is at stake if nothing else. (Hell aren't we winning the war in Iraq???? LouieB
