  1. Not sure what Zarieeka has to do with any of this, but I suppose on one level you do have something of a point. While music is somewhat subjective, there are agreed upon songs, peices, etc. that lots of people like. A really good book on this stuff is called "This is your brain on Music." There are chords that are sort of universally struck by a common set of musical patterns and intervals. Even where there are cultural differences even in musical scales, there appear to be sounds that are pleasing to all humans and some that aren't (and others that have to be learned.) What any of thi
  2. Just ask people around you if they are from VC. You will find plenty of us. Meanwhile I am about to get on the road...see you here and there. LouieB
  3. Saw the film last weekend and must say it is damn good, well good for a film of this sort I suppose. Chicago/Gotham never looked so good. But let's be honest, a chase scene on lower Wacker is getting a bit stale. There are many films this has been done in, so maybe it is now time to retire this. I know people like it (driving it in real life can be an adventure too, just in case some of you have never done it...), but it is getting a bit tired. In any event I enjoyed the fuck out of this movie. Even the irritating Batman growl, while I thought it was somewhat bizarre, wasn't that ba
  4. Uh oh, I have not listened to this yet, but I bought both a CD and LP copy..... LouieB
  5. Chalk this up to dyslexia or something, but every time I see this thread title I read "My New Morning Record Jacket Album" and think it is about the Dylan album... LouieB
  6. Oh yea, I have done it before, earlier in my life (several times in fact.) I am planning to take 17 (which is 88 and 86) between Albany and Cleveland on the way back, but sticking to the Thruway on the way there so I don't get to Boston at midnight. LouieB
  7. Oh gawd...the Who were a generation earlier than the Clash and great in their own right (no matter how sick we have gotten of hearing their songs open CSI shows and in dreadful commercials...) LouieB
  8. Uh oh..now you will incur the wrath of the people who hate seated shows. Frankly not spending the remaining few minutes of my life freezing on the streets of Uptown, however romantic that seems now in the warmth of the Chicago summer and sitting in my home away from the screaming bums of Uptown, will be fine with me. LouieB
  9. As I always reply, it is on the Northside, just so no one has to look throughout the entire city to find it. Maybe this February will be warmer....we can always hope, but mostly we need to hope they will do this again. LouieB
  10. Actually I am going to be staying with Rick and Laurie (who you may not know yet, but I met at the Residency) who live in southeast Mass. I am going to be going on to Albany after the show and stay with my bro-in-law (unless you guys want to party afterwards) and then on to Cleveland to stay with my sister the next night. Wish me luck. I am leaving for Cleveland tomorrow morning and traveling east to spend the weekend in Boston prior to the show. Lots of driving and lots of CDs for the way. (This is posted out there for anyone who wants to pick up a hitch in either directions to points
  11. I pretty much finished this book last night (I have a few pages left to read, so not totally finished) and I have to say I am sad that I am finishing it and had moments of disappointment while reading it. This is a pretty good book, with many details based on Lewis' exaustive interviews with all the major AACM figures and many of the minor ones as well. For that reason alone this is an important book and an important piece of scholarship. There are points where he digresses into discussions of the conflicts between the Chicago and NY factions and also somewhat theoretical discussions on the
  12. Oh okay...really?? So then what is the big deal?? I totally missed that (been too busy to spend tons of time reading websites...). so what exactly is this tour? It sure looked like a tour they were doing. If this is just a regular old David Byrne tour it really isn't THAT special. I mean I realize he doesn't tour all that often, but he does tour some. edit- I read the material on the website and damned if it doesn't LOOK like Eno is touring; Byrne says he is playing music from their collaborations. Looks like a touch of bait and switch to me, since I am guessing Byrne often plays materi
  13. Hey Zeus...what a huge tour. I bet neither of these guys has had this long a tour in a decade....very cool. LouieB
  14. Since the band sometimes reads this stuff I am sure Jeff will get right on it and throw someone under the bus (maybe literally) because someone here wants him to. (I sort of assume that post was a joke, although I know most of the others are not...) Or maybe he can invent a time machine and go back 15 years and become the person he was then. For better or worse people change and move on. Wilco is one of the best bands touring at the moment and clearly they are very popular, far more popular than 15 years ago. They have a great catalogue to pick songs from and the promise of more interest
  15. I am driving west directy after the show....anyone need a ride? I could use a bit of extra gas money. LouieB
  16. Wow....this sucks... Glad I got that off my chest... LouieB
  17. Actually I found Johnston's drawings to be the least of his talent. He does what any moderately talented high school student does, draws cartoons and obsesses about women's bodies (without heads and arms) and outer space creatures. I found his movie totally depressing and frankly upsetting. He writes cute ditties that hip groups have jumped on and performed, but he is a mess as an individual. Mental illness is not pretty (and isn't pretty in any of these cases). It leads to tortured lives, broken relationships and alot of pain. Romanticizing it is bad also. The one thing the Kane movie
  18. With a large cast and crew, it is probable that stuff happens. Heath died months ago, Stars like Freeman and Bale (as well as Ledger) get into scrapes all the time that are well publicized because they are famous. If you or I get in an accident or have a personal altercation, no one calls the press. LoiueB
  19. I think this could have been a pretty entertaining and insightful movie, but somehow it missed the boat. With thousands of hours of footage they picked up some very self indulgent stuff to show and much of it had no point. I was expecting some sort of competition, but frankly there was little healthy competion, which could have been pretty fun, since the Dandy Warhols have managed to make an excellent living as working musicians and BJM has ended up a cult band with much less to show for its (his) efforts. I went through a period of seeing a number of movies about wacked out rock figures (D
  20. Why would anyone in their right mind want to publicize where the loft is????? If you know, keep it to yourself, drive by for a cheap thrill and be done with it. LouieB
  21. While it was mainly country artists who bought them, such as Porter Wagner, Gram Parsons had a rather famous one with marijuana leaves on it (the rest of the Flying Burritto Brothers had other stuff.) Pretty cool. LouieB
  22. I am kind of the wrong person to answer, but I have Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A Retrospective which seems to be a pretty good comp of their stuff for the uninitiated. I have never had the desire to buy another album, but that is just me. Actually I really like the Dandy Warhols, but not a huge fan or anything. LouieB
  23. "Dig" is a good movie that was never made. There is alot of talk about all the footage the director got and then he reused the same footage over and over at a few points. Fun movie, but it needed someone else to edit it and make a coherant statement about both bands. LouieB
  24. Must be a "generation gap" here.....the best place to get an intro to Cohen's music is the not lousy "McCabe and Mrs. Miller".....I didn't get my intro to him there, but it is a great place to hear a good soundtrack of his music. LouieB
