Okay, back to talking about the fest few are interested in... I got my butt out of the house early yesterday in time to see most of Isotope 217 at the jazz on Jackson stage and I was glad I did. Atlthough they are basically Tortoise with a trumpet, it was very fun to see them and despite being the first group of the fest (not counting Sonny the night before, since this set was located in the area the rest of the fest is being held at if that makes any sense...), they had a good crowd and a nice reception. Playing the usual post-rock jazz influenced material, they were quite good and seemed

Yea and the Republicans are gonna need Alaska to win this election... I guess McCain thinks that having a woman on the ticket will be the deciding factor in getting the Hillary vote, maybe. Let's see how many are fooled by that....(or maybe it the Monty Python fans who think she is related to Michael.) LouieB

Anyone going down for Isotope 217 at noon and the guitar summitt after?? Last night was a gas. As one of my friends said, jazzfest is Chicago at its best, multi-racial, all ages, parents with kids, old people, young people, everyone is generally respectful and friendly and last night was mellow as could be with Rollins being in generally top form at 78 playing his ass off with a topnotch band for nearly two hours straight, no encore however. His band included a great trombone player, excellent drummer, an African (I think) percussionist (too low in the mix however) and a bass player who h

Yup...just wait and see. Okay cool. Just re-reading the line-up in The Reader makes me nuts. There is so much good stuff going on it is crazy. The daytime line-ups are nearly equal to the evenings. Even if you aren't that much into jazz, there is some really great rock and improv associated stuff going on. Hell the afterfest stuff is also pretty fine. I know most people here are indie rockers, but you can't ignore what is happening with some of these musicians. Since I plan to spend all day and all night at the regular parts of the fest, I won't have energy left for that stuff.

I hate Kerry, what a fucking idiot....I refused to watch his speech..... The rest was all good by me, including Biden't speech and particularly Bill who hit a fucking homerun as far as I am concerned. I can't wait for the snide ass Republics next week. These assholes have NO answers for the fucking horror show they have created these past 8 years.... LouieB

REgarding the property/school funding issue; I suspect that the local bargaining units DO like the inequality of all of it since those more affluent districts pay their teachers insanely well and they get all sorts of perks and pension deals. The rest simply get fucked. LouieB -

It could be a bit late for this tonight (or any night) but TG is going to have a regular show on WDBX in Carbondale on Wednesday nights at 2 AM to 4 AM starting tonight. That may help those of you in other parts of the world hear her. Her show is called Devil's Radio, with a tip of the hat to Robyn Hitchcock and more generally to the idea that many kinds of music we all know and love were once (or still are) considered immoral or "devil music". (Thank you thank you very much....) Anyway if there are any insomniacs out there with nothing else to do, tune her in. LouieB

Actually Skokie has pretty low taxes too. Both Niles and Skokie have a nice industrial tax base. Somewhere like Evanston is outrageously high because the taxing bodies don't have much in the way of commercial properties to tax (ie; Northwestern and other schools, lots of churches, few factories), so that makes Evanston (sadly) out of most reasonable peoples limits, unless you are pretty well off or willing to live in a poor neighborhood. If you want cheap in Chicago go south and mostly southwest. Or go to parts of Cook County that aren't as expensive or desirable. But places like DuPage an -

Most of the production seems fairly even handed to me. I think some of the later material is fairly uneven (the box set particularly...) and IV is just plain sad and upsetting to me, but then we have discussed this here before. LouieB -
Not going to happen unless the band wants to move to Champaign....... I guess people need something to talk about here..... LouieB

Actually property taxes are lower in the city than in most suburbs. Not to say they are low. I think five grand sounds high though. I don't believe I pay that much. Expect to spent several 100k for a house however. LouieB -
Terrific speech. Cindy won't speak I am sure. Voting for the poorest candidate is of course ridiculous, but not voting for John McCain is easy regardless of how much he is worth. Sadly he is worth-less, despite his "get out of jail" free card. Seeing Teddy for what is probably the last time, was sad indeed. Perhaps he will return to the Senate in January as promised, but despite looking reasonably good, I would think that is a long shot. LouieB

Finally listened to this album a few times. Good stuff. Not sure what they did to his voice on some tracks but he sure sounds alot like Springsteen on some of it. LouieB
