Ignore the trolls.... LouieB

Hallelujah.... Nothing wrong with No Child Left Behind that a few more dollars and a few less tests wouldn't help. NCLB is merely federal education funds, which have been around for decades and been supported by both parties over the years, with a name and philosophy given by Bush and supported by Kennedy and just about everyone in between. It has needed a reauthorization for a couple years and will finally get a make-over after the upcoming election..... Also it helped pay me a few times in the past, so I ain't gonna complain. LouieB

Well okay I half see your point, except that the music that was being made DID have varous labels, but not specifically alt.country. Certainly the artists that we are talking about influenced those that I we can half agree are alt.country, but they weren't making music under that banner. Certainly alot of groups were playing country type music; in fact artists never stopped making country and country influenced music. But add some punk and a bit more attitude and it became alt.country. Artists such as Earle and Van Zandt and EmmyLou and Waylon and Willie and the Flatlanders and a ton of oth

Double trolling... It isn't strictly about semantics. alt.country was something different than country rock, no doubt about it and no one was calling NRPS or Poco or even Gram Parsons alt.country...it was always country rock. Townes Van Zandt was just trying to write a bunch of good songs and have others play them if they would. Willie and Waylon were Outlaws. Even Steve Earle was hitting the tail end of outlawdom. LouieB

Anyone go? Also no one has yet written about Glenn at Ravinia either....if they did someone let me know okay?? LouieB

Hmm..how do you figure it is incorrect. Just how old are you? I figure you are one of those folks who sticks anything that isn't straight up Nashville into alt.country, but the fact remains no one called it that until the early 90s, prior to that it was country rock. LouieB I think we got someone trolling here..... LouieB

Alt.country is something that started around the turn of the 90s I would say, the rest is country rock. Sorry old man.... all of us remember these albums from our youth, but they weren't called alt.country they were something else, along with Commander Cody and NRPS, etc. LouieB

I had a picnic with some like minded friends today and asked their advice. To all those who said don't talk politics until after the election, I think that makes sense. The sad part about this is that my friend wasn't a Republican and probably still thinks of himself as some sort of leftist. Strangely some of the folks I had the picnic with were pissed at Obama for being so pro-Israel and there is a guy here in Chicago making a video for free regarding Jews for Obama. Turns out some very influential and NOT leftwing types have backed Obama from the beginning. Of course it is not about Juda

Okay..this is slightly different. I have a long term friend (my oldest in Chicago, but now lives in SoCal) who was "radicalized" in Madison Wisc during the 1960s (yea the real 60s). Over the years he has become really attached to the state of Israel, including marrying an Israeli and living there for a time. No biggie. He has decided to support McCain because McCain will be better for Israel and Obama won't. The other day he sent me a long winded email about Stanley Kurtz, one of the "journalists" investigating Obama and he attached all this BS about Wright, etc. My friend honestly believes

The lawn always holds more of the partiers than the listeners. It is a real testimony to the audience in the seats that people didn't leave. I truly believe that the sophistication of the folks coming to see Ornette was at the highest level. A few left, but in general the seats were filled and those that did leave left quietly and respectfully and maybe wanted to beat the crowd. They were equally as rapt with 8 Bold Souls by the way. I think the sound issues at Petrillo are overblown. I found the sound at Pritzker the other night not so hot, despite the so called state of the art sys

Last time around for this thread.... I only attended the Petrillo events, but what events they were. The night opened with Ron Dewar and a bunch of musicians originally from Champaign who performed a competent if uninspired set, which was all that was called for really. Good low key tunes. The ICP Orchestra from Holland was more energetic and very fun, with an eleven piece band including cello and violin (or was it viola), piano, bass, drums, three saxes (clarinets), trombone and trumpet. Fun offbeat stuff that ranged from raggy swing type material to totally free. At one pont the drum

This is frankly the biggest fuck up by BEZ ever. Of course they don't play hardly any music anymore, but it used to be great to be able to listen to the fest and the interviews with the musicians between sets, etc. on BEZ. I don't know how much it cost them, but this lack of programming is inexcusable frankly. LouieB

Frankly I believe most of the audience's brain will be reduced to that long before Ornette hits the stage. See the Petrillo line-up tonight. I am sure the ICP Orchstra will be pretty far out and I know 8 Bold Souls is solid AACM (they played Pitchfork a couple years ago to a nearly empty tent on a hot day...) so the remaining audience by Ornette will be either ready or gone. I am pretty sure I saw this line-up (his son on drums) a few years back and they are not as far out as one would at first imagine, but they aren't playing straight ahead either.... Even an hour with Ornette is pretty

Who knows, maybe it will be slightly longer. Even Sonny with the stage to himself played short of 2 hours. This isn't a Springsteen or Wilco show. LouieB

Palmieri went over 10 minutes to about 9:40 or so. This will not go late. The stage manager is very strict. LouieB

Sort of a combination of the two. Initially on Friday night you could just wander in anywhere, but when it got really crowded around the next to last act they had it roped off so they weren't letting in anyone except those obviously that had seats. It filled nearly up for Eddie Palmieri so I guess they figured they had best keep it together. I have no idea about last night, and I am not sure how many folks Ornette will attract; Palmieri attracted lots of non-jazz folks since he also plays salsa and is popular in the hispanic community, since he has played with everyone over the past 60 year

Stay high and dry...good luck. LouieB

Happy Birthday!!!! LouieB -
Hopefully someone else made it to jazzfest yesterday. I admit I was simply too fatigued to venture down and decided to save my energy for Ornette tonight. So it goes...you can't do everything. LouieB

I need a new one too... LouieB

I hope they stopped at Funks Grove Maple Sirrup on the way down... LouieB

You don't have to break anything to me....he isn't but his proxy...John McCain certainly is. LouieB

Not sure...5-6 maybe....kinda beat from the last couple days and not so excited about the lineup today. Looks like 5....can get you a ride. LouieB

Maybe read this thread....I saw him. He was great. See above. What else would you like to know?? He looked and sounded great. Wasn't overwhelming but was solid and had a great backing band. LouieB

Palin will pick up the Hillary supporters who are one dimentional. This is going to be a pretty one dimentional election in many respects anyway. Hell I am voting for Obama, for one reason ( aside from the fact that I lik him alot...), because it is time to dump ALL the Bushies out the fucking door as quickly as possible. For most people it is really not about ideology it is about simple shit like pro or anti abortion (as we can see from this thread), pro or anti second amendment, pro or anti war, pro or anti green, pro or anti woman, pro or anti gay, pro or anti taxes, pro or anti black, p
