  2. This is also one of those jazz albums that all rock fans seem to have. I didn't mention it in my article, but it used to be everyone had this one. It is basically more of a rock/R&B album, but it is worth a listen. Not a classic or anything, unless classic means old and overvalued. Finger Poppin by Horace Silver was one of the first jazz LPs I ever bought..great stuff. I bought it in a used record store in Minneapolis, back when used record stores were something of a novelty.   5. Yea Speckly..it was early. I found it used too. Also people should try the Coctails reissues as well, since they were Archer Prewitt's original band as well. Their box set is also quite good and fun. LouieB

I dreampt that I was at a very under populated Wilco show at some very large venue with a very low stage and I decided to buck the trend and to right up and sit in front of the stage and that Jeffy came over and gave me a high five to indicate he appreciated the fact that I was up front instead of hanging back.   10. One of the most fun comps of early jazz is Yazoo's Jazz that Time Forgot (I think it is called.) There are two volumes and both are a hoot. LouieB
  11. Not worse than Whitewater....that's not really my point I guess....nor is it a reason not to vote for Barak, because I certainly did and will do so again as soon as he is nominated... I just have a slightly jaundiced view of the Obama phenomenon, not because I think he is bright, articulate and will ultimately make a far better president than W, but because politics is a VERY dirty business and Obama was only a short time ago an unknown state senator from Chicago, who has had his career boosted by the same folks that have boosted every other Illinois political figure since that is how busines
  12. It is strange to me at least that No Depression is going out of business. It appears that the advertising base has never been larger; there are hundreds and hundreds of roots type musicians out there, giving it a go, so I just don't know why things seem in such dire straits other than the entire print industry is feeling the same effects that the music industry (and every other industry) is feeling.   13. Yea, I will throw it on the turntable sometime and let you know. Holland's set with his own group at Chicago Jazz Fest three or four years back was just about the highlight of that year. He appears to be doing some of his best work as a group leader in the last decade. Strange how these first class sidemen are now stepping out as the shinning lights of the current jazz scene. LouieB

I was browsing at Laurie's yesterday and since there was nothing compeling in the "recent arrival" bins of CDs or LPs I decided to check out the country and folks bins for stuff that may have been slipped in there when I was not looking. Sure enough as I was looking through the country albums I found some Rounder and Flying Fish LPs which while not totally thrilling, at the price were more than worth the dough. I have always liked buying these two labels for their high quality material and nice packaging and these were about $3 each and I figure, why the heck not. Rounder out of Cambridg

  19. Amost all ARE available on vinyl. Most jazz vinyl is available used and in many cases brand new if you can afford it. If you are ever in Chicago visit the Jazz Record Mart and you can find a ton of stuff. LouieB
  20. O'Rourke's work along is enough to drive people crazy. Some is really wonderful and some is very noisy and atonal. The guy's career has led all over the place. Frankly I only know a fraction of it. LouieB
  21. How early are we talking about here? There have been jazz singers since the dawn of jazz so early doesn't really describe much. What year are we talking about here? 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s or what? LouieB
