Great Movie.... LouieB

I think Modern Times may be one of the best things Dylan has done in the last 10 years, even better than the previous two studio albums. I listen to it all the time and haven't gotten sick of it yet. As for vinyl collectors, the fact remains that vinyl is a very very small market; in fact most people other than us don't even know vinyl is for sale anymore. Ask some of your non-music collecting friends and if you tell them they can buy vinyl albums they will look at you like you are crazy. Mostly vinyl is being put out by small labels (Touch and Go, etc.) reissues (Sundazed) and limited majo

Is anyone really surprised that Columbia is putting out shoddy covers? They aren't very invested in vinyl releases anyway anymore. LouieB

Why?? All Dyaln albums should be available used somewhere. They sold lots. LouieB

Yea, I began thinking about that after I said it yesterday, but the fact remains, VU was a rather poor scuffling band that didn't have the same resources that bands like the Beatles or the Beach Boys would have had at that time. The description of them recording the first album in a studio that was about to be torn down is pretty entertaining. A far cry from what the big time bands had at their disposal at the same time. What is amazing about VU are the range of sounds they got out of their intruments just by playing them; particularly Cale's viola playing. When he left the band lost a gr

If I am around I will show up....remind me...I have not been to the Hideout since the Block Party. LouieB

There were no loops back then.....I know that is hard to imagine, just like there didn't use to be computers or TV..... In fact I believe the recordings done on the first album or two are live in the studio. In fact one of the great things about the box set is the booklet that describes the recording of the first album in a ramshackle studio that barely had any ammenities. This was the "good old days", few fancy recording facilities..whatever it took to get recorded. LouieB

How about this internet huh? LouieB

they don't do Kingpin every show and did not do it at Purdue...(thankfully.) Because of the more thoughtful nature of the show, they did songs a bit deeper than that one. LouieB

This is really the big time...I heard this album advertized on NPR a couple days ago (yes on NPR...) LouieB

Handshake Drugs?? Shot in the Arm (if you are into something a bit heavier...)??? LouieB

Putting this into a real time perspective, I was actually 17 when the first VU album came out and I was lucky enough to have a friend who was hip enough to have it, so we sat in his livingroom playing this thing and believe me, it was unlike anything I was hearing on either the radio or on any of the folk records my older sister had. The first Verve album was totally new and crazy shit. These albums (the first three) went out of print for years also, so we are lucky that this material is now fully available, both in the individual albums form and the box set to document the band's entire

Well you have a point there, but Take a Whiff on me and Cocaine are rather less explicit than Heroin to be sure. In fact Take a Whiff on Me makes coke sound like a ton of fun (not unlike Kicking the Gong around.) There have been drug songs for a good long time as we both agree upon, but most were relatively denatured during the folk revival by comparision to VU's more realistic take. LouieB

Yea, that was quite something. Wilco continues to be an exciting band no matter how many times you see them. Nels was on fire on Wednesday and the rest of the band seem to follow suit. Glad all the newbies were there to check them out. LouieB

Califone's hometown has the benefit of three shows on this tour. Wow, two at the Hideout and one at the Empty Bottle. Good times... LOuieB

Peel Back Slowly and See is one of the best box sets ever.... LouieB

Is there smoking in the venue where you are seeing Wilco? I wouldn't suggest smoking in a non-smoking venue. LouieB

I haven't, but I would like to get a copy. Does anyone know if it is still in print? I thought it was a limited release. LouieB

Based on the show at Purdue, there will be lots of new material this tour. LouieB

Well there were songs about drugs and taking drugs I suppose, but few in rock and roll in 1967 and none that talked about both the experience of actually taking it in graphic detail and the sleezy side of going out and getting it. All this was a far cry from Mr. Tamborine Man or Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds or even Steppenwolf's Pusherman or whatever it was called. (Or Kicking the Gong around by Cab Calloway...) LouieB
