Whats your favorite "fuck you" song?
thermocaster replied to junkbond_trader's topic in Someone Else's Song
Thanks. Yeah, the more I think about it, it may be the most direct "fuck you" of all of 'em... So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise You better see right through that mother's eyes Those freaks was right when they said you was dead The one mistake you made was in your head Ah, how do you sleep? Ah, how do you sleep at night? You live with straights who tell you you was king Jump when your momma tell you anything The only thing you done was yesterday And since you're gone you're just another day Ah, how do you sleep? Ah, how do you sleep at night? Ah, how do you sleep? Ah, how do you slee -
No. But it's close. 'Sky Blue Sky' sounds closer to Zuma than Tonight's the Night. (Good call Halcyon) The closest thing in Neil's catalog that I can compare 'A Ghost is Born' to is Sleeps With Angels. It's ironic, because in that other thread that was comparing Wilco albums to Beatles albums, I was trying to come up with their analogues to Neil Young albums. I got this far: AM - American Stars & Bars Being There - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere Mermaid Avenue 1 - Comes a Time Summerteeth - ???? Mermaid Avenue 2 - Old Ways Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - The bastard child of Rust Never S

Good choices all around. Some other nominees: "Yesterday's Papers" by the Stones. "How Do You Sleep" by John Lennon. "Stupid Girl" by Neil Young (or for that matter, "Stupid Girl" by the Stones). "Mother's Little Helper" by the Stones. "Amsterdam" by Guster. "Oh No" by Frank Zappa. -
Went to the lone remaining indie store in Bloomington yesterday... Not only was there no bonus disc, but there was also no CD/DVD combo! As a former indie store employee myself, I blame the management.

A couple of locations: Thermocaster's myspace page SoundClick Haven't updated them with the songs from the new album yet...I guess I should do that sometime soon.

Haha. That's clutch. Nice. So all we're missing now is Yellow Submarine.
-
I always saw the song as the story of a writer who is so engrossed in his craft that he constantly and subconsciously doesn't notice reality.
-
Sounds like a good time! I've been curious to hear what they sound like live. I'll miss the old Ambulance LTD...they had rapidly become one of my favorite bands.

The grades are in... AM: B Being There: B+ Summerteeth: A- YHF: A+ AGIB: A SBS: A- So what's their "Magical Mystery Tour"?

I've never used Garageband, but here's how I do it in Adobe Audition: 1) Load the whole file. 2) Select the first "track" that you want to make, all the way up to right before the second track (normally about 0.5 sec before the next song starts) 3) Use the "Copy" function, and then paste the copied file into its own, new file 4) Save that as "Track 01" or something like that 5) With the section still selected, delete it in the original file 6) Lather, rinse, repeat for all the tracks you want to make 7) Burn to disc using 0-second gaps That's always worked for me.

I was guitar shopping in January and had a choice between a tobacco Gibson SG reissue (for about $875) and an '87 cherry red Gibson SG for about $650. I ended up getting the '87. Best guitar purchase I've ever made. About the only thing wrong with it is some water damage on the headstock paint job, but it appears to be just a cosmetic thing. Love that guitar. I've also got a WildKat and a Gibson Les Paul Special, and I haven't gone near them since I got the SG.

1. Dreamer in my Dreams 2. Pieholden Suite 3. Less Than You Think 4. What's the World Got in Store 5. It's Just That Simple This is probably just a temporary list, though...heck, a year ago I couldn't stand Radio Cure or most of the second half of Being There. Now, it's a different story.

Ambulance Blues. ...although Powderfinger runs a close second.

A Man Needs a Maid at Massey Hall
thermocaster replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song
Fair enough. Sorry, I overreacted. "There's a World" has always been my least favorite NY song, and there aren't many NY songs that I even partially dislike from that era. -
Is it anything like the 20 minute acoustic version of Sixty To Zero?

How on earth could "A Man Needs a Maid" be inferior to "There's a World"? Granted, both suffer from the same problems (over-orchestration), but at least there's a decent song underneath in "Maid". -
Two nominees: A hole without a key If I break my tongue and Are there really ones like these? The ones I dream Float like leaves And freeze to spread skeleton wings I passed through before I knew you

Regarding After The Gold Rush's "short songs" - I guess "Cripple Creek Ferry" was written as part of the original soundtrack to the screenplay that never got filmed. I'm not sure about "Till the Morning Comes". YAMF, you made some good choices...and I agree with everyone's suggestions so far. However, I'll throw in one that hasn't gotten a lotta love (ha!) in this thread: Sleeps With Angels - This album took me like 5 years to get into, but it's probably among my top 4 favorites of his now. It's got a bit of everything, from the heart-in-your-throat feeling (My Heart, Prime of Life) to dis

Wilco being Wilco, there's a tinge of melancholy throughout much of SBS...but on the whole, the album sounds very hopeful to me. And really, it's the first "hopeful" album I can remember from them since...uh...Being There? So yeah, on an emotional level, I think that gives it a different basis for examination than, say, AGIB or YHF. I think the playing on this album is exquisite, and the songs flow into each other, for the most part. There's a couple of curveballs (i.e., "Shake it Off", which sits on its own the same way that "Vampire Blues" does in the middle of Neil Young's 'On the Beach

Not sure I hear any Abbey Road or White Album per se, although they're getting very close to John Lennon's guitar tone circa 68 on a couple of these tracks.
-
Hate it Here is ridiculously good. That is all.
-
Kinda felt the same way, although I hadn't actually heard any versions before this. I think it just might have to grow on me.
-
Alright, I just got to the middle of Side with the Seeds... Good lord. I'm really digging the loud music over the drum syncopation...yowzers.

Wow...on Impossible Germany, whatever effect Nels is using on his guitar for the solo is just sick. This sounds like something of Aja. And that's a good, good thing.
