Uncle Tupelo had definitely a punk background. They were listening to Black Flag! Now, why didn't we call it "cowpunk" anymore, like we used to for The Gun Club, Jason & the Scorchers, Social Distorsion, etc? Well, it's a 90s thing I believe. Everything from that decade that wasn't hardcore country was called "alt.country".

That track is actually my third favorite after "Ventura" and "Overtime". I thought I was one of the few disliking that album! I usually read good praise of it.

A guy of that band also plays with Shearwater, right? (Shearwater is released through Fargo Records in France) -

and do you agree that Jason Quever put his best songs in the first half of the album? It could have been a sweet pop masterpiece all along, but the second half is forgettable in comparison to the first. His voice is moving on the first two songs especially (almost in a Dylanian way circa 66). Did you listen to his previous album? If so, how is it? -
This album is so better than World Without Tears that it hurts... I'm currently listening to all my Lucinda Williams albums in a row... (the thing I do each time I want to listen to the latest), minus the very first which is a mediocre collection of covers, and the live album (which is one of the worst ever released in rock history) My preferences (with ratings) go like this so far (while I'm still listening to West): 1. Lucinda Williams (1988) 5/5 comment: her best and liveliest collection of songs, her masterpiece, raw and intoxicating 2. Essence (2001) 4/5 an album that needs t

This is a really fine album. For those who love pop music, Belle & Sebastian and all that. I don't like Belle & Sebastian myself, but I like Papercuts and Camera Obscura, so go figure. The guy under Papercuts is called Jason Quever, and he's obviously talented. -
One thing I can objectively state about Ryan Adams, is that I can't remember any artist that got as much pages on the Wilco board since I use to come here (that doesn't make long ago, but anyway...). I don't know what it means, but the pages aren't especially enlightening either. It's just stuff like "wow, it's his best" - "well, it's his weakest " "I love it", etc...

Knives. It's only released in France this month. So it's not her first solo effort?

I really don't "get" that Malajube record. I tried to start a listen twice, and it fell off my ears pretty fast. -
Hey, I have an advance of her first solo album, and it's incredibly good! No cover on this one, all original stuff. She's quite a talent. If some of you ever love Sam Phillips (the lady who sings, not the producer), that's right up your alley.

I may have to look further for Guster, I only have one album (Ganging Up on the Sun), which to me sounds close to Coldplay, though it's slightly better. Sure I know Marc Pisapia and James Haggerty often play with Josh Rouse. They were part of the "Joe, Marc's Brother" (funny name, isn't it?) trio with Joe. Even David Mead was part of the early line up. Mead being another great talent in his own right. His latest album found a new indie label in France, which is great. -
If you except some Canadian girls maybe, I've yet to meet someone who loves Ron Sexsmith as much as me. But I'm not sure it means he's underrated. But I sure think he is, in regards of his amazing gift for soft melodies. I mean, Paul McCartney can just dream of licking his ankles. Clearly not his bank account, though.

I don't love everything he does, but Further In is a really beautiful collection of songs, great playing, melodies and voice.

Start with Sail Away. It's one of the best albums ever!

So we share one most favorite album.

Personally I like every Josh Rouse album, but always with some personal favorite songs as well. But sometime my fave moments change, it depends how I'm on the sequencing. Under Cold Blue Stars is the one that moves me the most (especially the second half, from "Feeling No Pain" to "Whole Night Through"), but I think 1972 is his strongest record as a whole, rich and nicely produced. I love the rock indie sound of Dressed Up Like Nebraska as well. Nashville and Subtitulo are more "light", though I don't hear anything really "jazzy". "adult"? yeah. No trouble between "adult" music and me. You k -

I don't doubt you're honest, but I disagree. I don't find his earlier albums "that" superior. I can understand alt.country fans (or Ryan Adams fans) prefer his earlier stuff, but I personally also dig his easy going and laid back thing lately. It's just slightly different music, with different audience probably, but no way I would find him boring. I'm really curious to hear his latest album, and am glad he tries some changes. Your assertions won't change anything, as long as you don't bring strong arguments on the map. -

That makes one album and a half (not including the not-released-yet one). There are good songs on Subtitulo. When Ryan Adams can put a melody like "Quiet Town", I give you a call. I haven't purchased the half album he recorded with his girlfriend. Oh wait: I buy my albums, as for me. I don't spend my time downloading everything. And sure I want to taste the new one myself, as I'm not sure we have the same idea of what good music is. -

It will hardly be as boring as anything Ryan Adams ever put out anyway, musically speaking... -

I'll tell if I agree with you next month - as I will of course buy it -

I find ALL his albums pretty great... so I doubt this one will disappoint me... the more so as "light jazz" sounds like good music to my ears already -

can't wait to hear that New Pornographers album, but God, the cover art is awful! -
Jesus Christ, Ryan Adams is big on the Wilco board I could never bear that guy (poor talent included)

Well, I've been an instant fan as early as I heard the first seconds of "I Can't Stand It" on the VU vinyl album, not to speak of all the songs of all the other albums, and I've never been to New York. I'm pretty sure the fact it's tied to a place and a time is what makes it especially original and timeless.
