I don't know if shoelaces on those Joy Division kicks are a good idea... Too soon?

Sparklehorse is a good recommendation. Maybe some Magnolia Electric Company and Band of Horses, too? The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema could be a good fit for ya as well as Spoon's Gimme Fiction. The new Gruff Rhys album Candylion is charmingly friendly on the ears. If you don't want to be bogged down with lyrics, then Bill Frisell might do the trick for some country-flavored, quirky jazz compositions. Chuck Prophet? The last Silver Jews record? Rogue Wave? And *ahem*

You remind me of the babe. Well, I already knew it wasn't Bowie engaging in the crystal orb legerdemain. It was former President Jimmy Carter. "I'll cast you into the Bog of Eternal Malaise!"

Whenever I hear the hype machine start frothing over some (typically British) next big thing, I very often give a listen, chuckle to myself and say "Bowie did it". There's almost no genre of the "indie" rock world that doesn't have his fingerprint on it in some fashion. Mick Ronson and Trevor Bolder are two of the most dangerously effective musical cohorts a frontman could ever ask for. Listening to the bassline for "Soul Love" or the guitar lines searing through "Time", it's hard to imagine them any more perfectly realized. "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" may be the biggest sounding three minutes

My din-din last night consisted of some mighty tasty kebabs: I used about 20 oz. of sirloin, cut into approx. 1.5" cubes. Marinate for a few hours in 1/4 cup olive oil, 2 cloves garlic, a handful of cilantro (both chopped all to hell), a tablespoon of garam masala powder, a dash or three of fresh grated or powdered ginger, a dash of dried chile flakes, and a liberal dose of kosher salt and pepper. This makes about 5 healthy-portioned skewers (or more if you're using smaller skewers I guess...). Toss that junk on a hot grill and turn frequently for about 8 minutes. For the sauce, toss a hal

Phil's made an awfully nice career out of not really knowing what a bass player is "supposed" to be doing. Phil & Jerry locking up and spiraling in and out with one another forms the essence of most of the great transcendent Dead moments, IMO.

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew Never actually listened to it hungover, but I sure as hell know that after a long, crapulent night my brain makes the kind of noises heard on that album.

Cool! One of my favorite under-appreciated Beatles tunes along with "Long, Long, Long", "It's All Too Much", and "I've Got a Feeling" I'll whore out my band while I'm at it:

Yes- "Gates of Delirium". Monstrously overblown, unnecessarily complex prog audacity. Yet, I love it. I like "Time After Time", "Breakfast In America", and "Don't Dream It's Over", too.

Some impressive collections here... I have a trust 1949 Martin 00-18 that helps me compose most of my songs. It's well-worn, with some hairline cracks and a whole mess of dings and dents on it. My main instrument is bass, and I use a Warwick Thumb 4 neck-thru. I like my strings as old as possible and I use a ProCo Rat and a cheapo Ibanez overdrive. I have an Akai Deep Impact, too, which I love, but the damn thing is unreliable, recently producing hideous shrieks and feedback for some reason. I think the jacks are, well, jacked. I also mess around on an Epiphone Les Paul semi-hollowbody,

My current top seeds are Wilco, Spoon, The Flaming Lips, Super Furry Animals, Built To Spill, Silver Jews, and whatever Malkmus or Danger Mouse are involved with. TV on the Radio is sneaking in there, and The Gourds are the band that deserves much more attention than they receive. As far as all around studio craftsmanship, live performance, and consistently engaging songwriting- yeah, Wilco is pretty tough to surpass. ETA: Beck, too!

I would love to play bass with the Stripes. Not that they need it- but it would be a cool gig. I'm curious to see how their sound continues to evolve. The pianos and marimbas were certainly unexpected on Get Behind Me Satan, and I'm thinking we may get some more straightforward rock on the new one after Jack's Raconteurs stint. The Stripes got me after I initially thought they were an overly affected-sounding gimmick. I was wrong.

The original Virgin MegaStore on Oxford St. really deserves a visit, too. It's a touristy, but thoroughly enjoyable section of the city for strolling. Watch out for some of my Cockney thug relatives on the East End.

I think Belize has been lookin' at us kinda funny recently, too... Let's bring down some liberation on British Honduras!
