  1. This Palin personal email hack thing is weak! I don't know much about this group "Anonymous" other than they have been targeting Scientology. This is NOT what Obama supporters should want to see.
  2. I don't really get what that has to do with agnostic vs. atheist. There are those that resent sharing the planet with those that don't believe in God or don't believe in their God. What difference does it make to you if someone believes something you don't so long as it is personal? There are people out there that believe all kinds of things yet we get worked up over this. I would like to see us move away from the so-called culture wars and the best way I can see is to stop being threatened by differing beliefs. Agnostic doesn't mean tolerant of religious beliefs. It means " I don't have all t
  3. Eh whatever. Seems like much ado about nothing to me. I don't share their beliefs and they don;t share mine. So what. As long as we can agree to disagree, no harm no foul, IMO. I don't think in most cases belief prevents people from doing "something productive" any more than just about anything else. Kill TV, etc. I mean, couldn't you be out ... oh I dunno ... adopting a highway or something instead of THIS abject waste of human resources? There are always differences in how people would elect to dedicate their time and energies. They have theirs and I have mine. Oh I agree with this and I
  4. Meh, I think moderation can mean more than that. If someone lost someone close to them, belief can be comforting. If someone needs a "higher power" to give them focus, direction and purpose, who am I to take that away from them just because I find the basis for it intellectually naive. Plenty of people are motivated to do charitable things because of their faith and I applaud that. I am not threatened they believe something I do not. My problem is when those beliefs are foisted on those that do not share them. Those living their lives and allowing me to live mine do not bother me even if they
  5. Agreed. Which is why I think those with more reasonable beliefs should stand up and be vocal themselves. They allow themselves to be given a bad name.
  6. Well I think the arguments stems from an increasing desire to counter the influence of the religious evangelicals who strive to institutionalize their beliefs. To me they are the same thing. As someone who doesn't know (and who really could?), I don't have a belief in God. I will say that I have no reason at this point to even consider the existence of God. Which is to say, I would never start with that as a premise. But, until it can be disproven, I need to be intellectually honest and allow for the possibility, no matter how remote.
  7. First I do not agree entirely with what TheMaker posted, but you have taken an equally myopic view in this entire thread. Just because someone is an atheist doesn't mean they fall neatly into the definitions you have provided. An atheist is merely someone who does not have an active belief in gods. Period. Anything else is baggage I would argue you and others (on both "sides") are assigning. As I said before, as an atheist, I am contending nothing. Lack of belief in something is not automatically contention in disbelief. I know that is hard to grasp, but it is the truth. The mere fact that I d
  8. Agreed re evangelical anythings. As an atheist, I am contending nothing. Lack of belief in something is not automatically contention in disbelief. I know that is hard to grasp, but it is the truth. The mere fact that I don't know necessitates that I do not believe in a creator. BUT I don't contend that there isn't one. I merely search for answers that may or may not include a creator.
  9. Is this what was meant by "ownership society"!?!
  10. Do you intentionally misrepresent my posts just pick a fight with me? Seriously? My post was, in essence, in total agreement with what you are saying. The characterization of my "person of faith" was meant to portray those that are on the extreme (and yes, they DO exist) to point out that you can find those that are so certain of their position that they cease to have an open mind on both sides of the belief spectrum. Please re-read my post (emphasis added): Do you really think I am attacking all believers? No, I am merely pointing out that a lack of belief in god does not equal a lack of
  11. You could say the exact opposite, as well. Atheists (or more accurately, agnostics -- same thing in my mind, but we won't go there again) are not attributing the world's mysteries to some unknown being. An atheist might be more inclined to build powerful telescopes to peer into the origins of the universe, whereas a person of faith might be less inclined because well, they "know" the answer: God did it. The truth is that is a specious argument and objectivity can and does exist among those of faith and those without it.
  12. Yeah DP#6 and Copps Coliseum (available on the So Many Roads box set) are the two commercially available that sprung to mind. Also, I think we'd be remiss if Cornell '77 wasn't mentioned and that is probably the most widely circulated recording of all time. I believe you can even find in 5.1 surround sound!
  13. I was in the Caesar's Palace sports book as this went down. It was surreal.
  14. You know I was sitting in the Vegas airport bar talking to a guy from Milwaukee last night and he said he thought Yost would get the axe. I was incredulous. Yeah they're in free fall, but that seems crazy to me.
  15. I just saw Koza open for Cloud Cult. I liked him. Definitely better than the typical opener. Plus he was wearing an awesomely bad sweater and ridiculously tight pants.
  16. Yeah I'm just getting started with it. My first impressions are that it is much more accessible than Cookie Mountain. I'm not sure that is a good thing or a bad thing ... or just a thing. But what I loved about Cookie Mountain was the unexpectedness of it all. Either way, Dear Science, is a great album, but I'll need more time before I could put it at the top of my list above Cloud Cult, Man Man, Raconteurs, Malkmus, Beck Black Keys, Dr. Dog, Sigur Ros, Plants and Animals, etc.
  17. If PMs are floating around, count me in! I don't know where you guys find this shit! I've been looking for this for a while and first the YouTube clips and now the Myspace has me REALLY excited for this album! np:
  18. I actually got to have cake and champagne with band during the set break in MD in '87 for Mr. Hart's bday. It was neat! /shameless bragging
  19. Yes, I did. I think it's great and the set is definitely cool looking. 11/11/73 was and is my favorite show though and fall/winter '73 my favorite era. The sound quality is not stellar but typical for that timeframe. I had 11/11/73 on DAT and the sound quality on my DAT was comparable to this set. It's nice to have the whole thing. If you've never heard the Dark Star->Mind Left Body Jam-> Eyes from 11/11/73, it is worth the price of admission alone!
  20. FYI there is a digital transition in '09 (in case you hadn't heard).
  21. It sounds as though the flacs might be coming, but if anyone wants MP3s, PM me.
  22. I thought Alt Country was the name of super model Carol Alt's Montana ranch. (sorry)
  23. If no one else offers, I can upload the MP3s, but I already ditched the flacs.
  24. Yeah gotta agree with you there. I've been listening to the two tracks on YouTube (w/ Gibbard intros), but haven't been able to find this. Damn, you find a lot of stuff early! I'm seeing her at ACL Fest in a few weeks. Pumped! The tracks I've heard are great!
  25. Love this album! Seeing Cloud Cult on Thursday night.
