Thanks everyone. I think I'm going with "In Memoriam." What about the second question? That one seems like there should be common etiquette. Is it Bride's bother-in-law or Future brother-in-law? And, mountain bed, I've got Seis de Mayo, that new orchestral Dead album and some orchestral Zappa (in addition to more traditional jazz and classical music) that will be played as dinner music.

Does anyone know what I should do here? I am planning to have my brothers serve as groomsmen. One of my brothers passed away over 15 years ago and I would still like to honor him as a groomsman. I plan to list him in the program and on our wedding web site. What is the most appropriate way to do so? One of these: [brother's Name} (Deceased) Groomsmen Groom's brother or [brother's Name} (In Memory) Groomsmen Groom's brother Or something else entirely? Also, my fianc

I feel I should clarify as it seems my comments were misconstrued. I still very much enjoy seeing Andrew Bird live. If I didn't I wouldn't keep going back (I've probably seen him 10+ times over the years). However, I do think he would be much better if he got a full band. The more band members he has, the better he sounds, IMO. His reliance on the loops, while an impressive display, causes him to lose much of the nuance of his compositions. I'm not saying he should play his songs note-for-note, but there should not be that level of sacrifice of the compositions' form simply to accommodate his

I'd be pretty much opposite, i guess. I have tried to give Sonic Youth every chance due to their wide acclaim, but just have never gotten into them. However, I love Jim O'Rourke. I love all of his solo stuff, his tracks on the Loose Fur albums are my favorites and (IMO) it is his contribution to the Wilco sound that made me a Wilco fan. I haven't really sought out O'Rourke Sonic Youth though. Is there any particular album where he is the dominant influence?

Does he have a band beyond Dosh and Jeremy? I'd have to say that, although Bird is probably in my top 10 favorite current musicians, I'm also underwhelmed by his live performances... and I have seen him a few times with Dosh and once with Jeremy. For me it's not his vocal though. It's what everyone ELSE seems to love about his live performances -- the loops. It's a novelty to me and one that causes him to have to simplify his arrangements. I'd rather he just got a full band. It's like Charlie Hunter. It's impressive, but after a bit, I don't care HOW the music is being made, I just want it to

Yeah, I guess I consider the YCDTOSA series (along with Dick's Picks and Live Phish) to be archival, but that is one live release that ANY Zappa fan MUST own. I also avoided jazz or I'd be here all day. -

A few that I haven't seen mentioned (apologies if I missed them): - Bob Marley - Babylon By Bus - Unplugged albums from Clapton and Nirvana (the Jay-Z one is pretty good too) - Phish - A Live One - JGB - The '91 Live double CD - Ween - Live in Chicago - Zappa - Make a Jazz Noise Here (all three releases from the '88 tour are great, but this is my favorite) ETA: Looks like two of these WERE already mentioned. -
Really? Maybe I have different defintiion of "well known" but I know they have covered: - Neil Young - The Smiths - Carly Simon - Portishead - Glenn Campbell - Pink Floyd - Can

In all seriousness, I heard they covered Portishead's "The Rip," but have they played any other cover tunes? Prince obviously famously covered "Creep" at Coachella and Gnarls Barkley covered "Reckoner" (I think), but I haven't heard much about Radiohead busting out any new covers.

So I go to my online "queue" today and see that our recently returned disc for the TV series Weeds has prompted this message: In other words: If you liked a TV drama/comedy about a widowed mom selling drugs to get by, you'll also like this shitty fucking kid's movie. Nice!

Then what is a "sick" drummer? If he compliments the songs and band perfectly, what's not sick about that? I'm asking somewhat rhetorically because I am assuming you are talking about technical proficiency. Something like "Danny Carey is a sick drummer!" But I've always contended if it was about chops, you wouldn't have Guitar Centers brimming with dudes who can shred. ... and now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Deadheads, can anyone recommend their favorite TLEO from an official release?

Wilco to perform at Outside Lands Festival in SF This Summer
Moe_Syzlak replied to gogo's topic in Just A Fan
Too late for me. Who releases the stage schedule a week and half before the festival!?! I must say I'm glad I waited. I would be able to see several bands I want to see, but there are overlaps that would have severely limited my ability to get the most out of this fest. -
Hmmm... clone something artistic and innovative, strip out all the soul and commercialize the fuck out of it for maximum profit and minimum integrity. Sounds about right to me.

The Flaming Lips are the American Super Furry Animals.

It's good. There was definitely some effort put into the arrangements as it mostly feels like a symphony rather than an orchestra playing Dead tunes. Some of the tunes are barely recognizable.

The "I so don't care about the Olympics" thread

My fiance and I were settling in to watch the relay last night and my mother, who is in town visiting us but had gone up to bed, yells down the stairs, "your brother just called and said the U.S. won the relay and set a world record." Ugh, no need to watch that now. How can NBC claim "live coverage" when only 1/4 of the country actually sees it live. -
Backstage recently at Red Rocks, my brother and I couldn't help but recreate a famous photo you all may be familiar with.

Via Chicago's Top 100 Albums of All Time: Summer 2008 edition

I use iTunes as my primary music playing device (obviously hooked up through my stereo) and I regularly pass the time (read: procrastinate) by creating playlists. I think I am going to make one with my favorite track from each of the top 100. -

Me too. But I'm surprised, even looking at the FULL list, how few my collection is missing. Nice work, gogo! -
I have a VERY smart friend (Harvard PhD) that works for BP in Europe. She is working on alternative energies and is an Obama supporter. I have no doubt she has contributed *something* to his campaign. That doesn't mean she is pro-OIL. She is an oil company employee who is dedicated to finding ways out of fossil fuel dependence. Should her contributions to Obama be looked at negatively?
