  1. As predicted Lester is a Cub. 6 years, $155 million. Yeah!
  2. I hate this notion of school districts as takers and providing nothing to people without children in the schools, simply untrue. Public Schools provide so much more to a community then just education of those that go to the schools. I don't know if this is your intent, but you sound like a cranky old man, yelling about how schools are taking money from you. I think losthighway is right, I think your problem is the state policies of your state, and the cities responding to their financial needs.
  3. My bad, that is a lot and I would be generally pissed if I was in your position. But I do challenge you on your assertion that you will get no new services. You will now be under the protection of the city police and fire and all other services (at least from what I can gather from your article). Also you can now be part of city government and use the power of your vote to change things in the city. That should not be over looked. Also in defense of LouieB it does sound like you are bitching about paying taxes for schools. And regardless of having children or not, it is every si
  4. What services have you already been getting form the city? From the article referenced below, you appear to be getting police, fire, library, etc. Probably the school district as well to? $125 extra dollars a year is not a lot (10 bucks a month). Sure it sucks, but you are probably getting a lot more out of it then you think. And probably you have been getting a lot of services for free in years past.
  5. I did find this article about the 17 states now planning to sue the President over his immigration plan. http://www.bigcountryhomepage.com/story/d/story/texas-leads-17-state-coalition-challenging-preside/21756/-vkWe7tE30Ko1L6JJvFIIw It does spell out the reasoning, namely the Take Care Clause (article II, section 3, clause 5 of the US Constitution). Which says that the President must enforce all laws must be faithfully enforced regardless of his opinion of the that law. But according to what I have read on that clause the President has discretion on how on how and when to enforce th
  6. stupid spell check! But other then my poor spelling, do you have any thoughts about this. I really want to know. The Right are decrying this as an illegal action, but I have yet to see any evidence that it is.
  7. So I have been thinking about this for awhile now and I just can't seem to wrap my head around it. Thought I would try the grand old VC knowledge base to help. We all know the President announced his plan, via executive order, to help/solve the immigration problem in this country. We have discussed the merits of the plan, ad nauseam. It is not the merits I am questioning. It is the way he did it and the GOP's response. So my question is do you think that the President's action was justified and legal? Or does it overstep the bounds of the office and warrants, as some have said. Is t
  8. The problems I had about Hixter is that he refused to read the article, but yet felt it necessary to comment on it. Which he seems to do quite a bit. He seems to refuse to read evidence that people present and have predetermined ideas about articles and authors based upon small wording in articles that he does not like. Just some flat out close mindness IMHO. But whatever, the more and more he does that, the less I value his opinion. Seems about right to me.
  9. Even though you stop reading halfway through you are still compelled to comment? Jesus. At least you admit you are willfully ignorant.
  10. I would imagine, but it probably is quite a bit different if you are black. Even if you are a long haired hippie biker dude, I think being black is another thing. But of course I am not black, so I can't really tell. So I am not going to speak to it. But to say you know what it is like to be profiled, I am not buying it. Yes, but of course but you are comparing apples and oranges. SLC is about 75% white, whereas in Ferguson is 67% black. Police shootings happen all the time. Let me clarify, in Ferguson if Michael Brown was white, would have the cop asked him to move to the s
  11. I think that is what we forget as we talk about this. I would gather that nearly everyone on this board (especially those that participate in this forum) are white males, with the average age being around 30-35. I don't think any one of us knows what it is like to be young and black and how the police see you (or society as a whole). I am not saying that because Brown was of a certain race that excuses him for not listening to the orders of the police, but on the same note it is tough to tell if the same situation would have happened if Brown was white. We cannot ignore the racial aspect o
  12. Just wondering Mr. Heartbreak, and I hope I am not overstepping any lines here, but what is your age and race?
  13. It is a lot easier to pour out in the streets turnover cars and riot then it is to vote. http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/06/politics/missouri-elections-ferguson-voter-turnout/ When 4 of 10 people vote in a community a majority of voices are not being heard. The people that are elected, the people who help determine what actions the Police can or cannot take in situations, the people who determine what evidence is presented to grand juries, are not being held accountable by a majority of its citizens. And voting is the least of what a person should do. It is a lot easier to riot then take
  14. I have hope in the system that the Grand Jury worked to the letter of the law, looked at the evidence presented and returned the correct decision. However I found this stat a little troubling. Out of 162,350 cases that were brought to a grand jury a total of 11 did not return an indictment. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/11/24/the-single-chart-that-shows-that-grand-juries-indict-99-99-percent-of-the-time/ It would have seemed to be that the evidence must have been overwhelming that the police officer acted in accordance of the law. But I agree the system is brok
  15. Yeah that seems like an odd couple of signings to me. Especially when their pitching staff is so far from being set. I guess this kinda paves the way for Lester to be a Cub now.
  16. The current crop of GOP are so anti-science it is scary. But, in truth it is not they are anti-science, they are pro business.
  17. Of course there will be problems, this his people we are talking about. If everyone followed rules and did what we are supposed to we would need things like this. But of course you have to see if the good out weighs the bad. In this case it does.
  18. I good honest question. It is one to ponder. I would imagine it would be some sort of finger printing, which would try to look at all databases around the world and verify background and criminal history. But the specifics of the plan have not been laid out, so all we have is speculation. But a couple of things to consider the number of immigrants with a criminal history is likely a very small percentage. But I would also imagine those that have a criminal history will not bother to go through background check, register etc and thus have a greater likelihood of being deported. Also onc
  19. I wonder if you saw or read the speech at all? I doubt many Americans did because it was not shown on any major news network. But anyway, where it is true many people broke the law by entering this country illegally. Though I suspect that there are millions of them using stolen SSNs. I would like to see some information on that. The real problem is the undocumented workers who are paid under the table, they not only get paid far less and have poor working conditions, they do not pay any type of taxes. The President's action would fix this. This is in fact where I tend to
  20. well that was interesting. All in all a good finale. Not great, but good. This season as really played well with the character arc, and wrapped up those themes by the end. It didn't leave too much hanging, but opened the door for the Christmas Special (yeah Nick Frost). But the elephant in the room was of course Michelle Gomez's Master (aka Missy). Regardless of what you think of gender swap regeneration, it is what Moffatt decided to do and it is one we are stuck with. So in general I was put off by the portrayal and the writing of the character. The Master has been a little crazy,
  21. I thought that was weird too, previously both the 9th and 10th Doctors have said they could sense another time lord living (presumably in all of the Universe). 10 could not sense the Master when he was Harold Saxon because of the low level psychic field of the Archangel Network. And in the End of Time 10 could sense the Master so that is why he was so eager to find him. When the Doctor first met Missy and she put his hand on her chest (and I am guessing he felt the two heart beats) he knew she was a Time Lord. Why he couldn't sense her early is anyone's guess. Well that is cert
  22. But you know the policies of GWB, Ronald Reagn, and Nixon are down right socialist compared to what this current GOP believes. The Pope is more pro science and equality than this lot.
  23. US Payroll rise, unemployment falls to 5.8%, 214,000 jobs were added last month. Gas is under 3 dollars a gallon DJIA is over 17,000 No wonder the Democrats got trounced Tuesday. Now that GOP has control of the House and Senate, when they push their legislation through, they need to own up to their policies and the results.
  24. 1,196,541 military deaths. Not to mention those civilians that died working for voter and racial equality in the mid 20th century. So at bit of hyperbole, but I'll still stand by it. If you are actively part of the process and look at the candidates and decide not to vote, I don't see that as a sign of disrespect. You actively participated in the process. However if you are too busy, or you forgot, or any just can't be bothered with it, that is where I have a problem. That is a sign of disrespect. Voting is one of the most important things a citizen can and will do. W
