  1. Nice job on the video. My brother was in Berlin most of Sept. and he enjoyed it a lot also.
  2. I think 2000-3000 hours is more like it, but it will depend on the make and model, and other factors like how well you have it aligned and balanced. Some esoteric designs like Koetsu are known for shorter lifespans of ~1000 hrs. Usually if your cartridge has a replaceable stylus it is on an assembly, just pull down on it gently (carefully) and it should come out. It will have the replacement model number on it. See needledoctor.com as a guide for prices etc. You can also examine the stylus with a magnifying glass...and try to keep it clean - and keep your records clean.
  3. What a completely hijacked thread.
  4. Many of the better 'tables have some sort of a clamping system - usually a threaded spindle and a gizmo like this. You clamp the record down before you start playing it. (the small thing is a spacer that sits under the record, it helps the clamp be a bit more effective)
  5. Hey, thanks, I just copped some free samples from them. Starbucks is fine if you don't mind paying for espresso or latte. Their regular coffee is just as bad as anywhere else. There's no surer way to suck all the flavor out of a coffee bean than to filter it through paper.
  6. George Martin was the cool Beatle.
  7. I've traveled in: Canada, USA, Barbados, Turks & Caicos, Guatemala, Costa Rica, England, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Israel, Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore. If not for my job, and my grandparents, I'd probably never have been to half those countries.
  8. That's pretty cool. I haven't been there, but I spent 4 months in Manila and traveled around Luzon a bit. And went to Boracay twice.
  9. I couldn't agree more. He seems pretty humble too - not just from verbal evidence, but in the restrained way he plays. There aren't many guitarists around with his skills, but you rarely hear him showing off. A case of a hotshot guitarist evolving into a great songwriter, I think that must be pretty rare. And all that wouldn't mean much if his songs didn't stand the test of time, but I think they do.
  10. It didn't impress me much on first listen....kind of like Sky Blue Sky. Seems to takes a few repeats to sink in. Doesn't have any "grab you" tracks, but they're all pretty good. VERY mellow..
  11. Just as an aside...not all 30-watt amps are gonna play at the same loudness. The speaker enters the equation as well. I think there are three main factors-- Amplifier power output Speaker sensitivity - how loud at various volume settings; given as e.g. 94dB/1w/meter Max SPL - given as e.g. 112dB
  12. I love this song. Along with Should've Been In Love, two of Wilco's best slow tempo songs ever... A.M. as a whole seems to be underrated.
  13. Why? The memory sticks are small, easy to share with friends...and a lot more eco-friendly than CD's/cd packaging. Let's face it, a traditional CD player is just an outdated computer. Now a turntable....is a work of art.
  14. +1 to me it's akin to paying for songs broadcast on terrestrial radio airwaves. It's all about the power of suggestion, innit? See the green queen icon light up on my iPod....need a latte frappe mochazombie.
  15. There's nothing like a UN visit from an axis of evil leader to get the self-loathing jew debate going. Sarchi, a self loathing jew, sometimes (btw, I think it was Woody Allen that coined that term...or was it about him? I can't remember)
  16. I watched this again a bit more closely...it seems I spoke too soon about the single mic. See pic below. This should be a great sounding dvd either way.
  17. Speaking of 'Roger Wilco'... I came accross this 2006 interview with Mcguinn yesterday, he made several very generous comments about Wilco and Jeff. http://www.popmatters.com/music/interviews...er-060731.shtml
  18. I like the Trinity Session ok, though I think it's a bit overrated. Some things I really appreciated about it - the dead quiet church atmosphere, one microphone set-up, etc., are probably impossible for them to replicate for this DVD. It could still turn out well, as A.P said. By the preview I'm hopeful they won't botch it with lots of bonus chattering. Some outtakes would be nice, especially without Merchant. I like Natalie but she's so one-dimensional. And Margo sure as hell looks good, eh.
  19. Pretty strange perspective. We're trying to win the hearts and minds of Iranians now? The bizarre part of all this is that a head of state is 'visiting' with no recognition whatsoever from the US government (in fact, the US and Iran haven't had any formal diplomatic relations for quite a while if I'm not mistaken). He's supposedly an enemy leader (axis of evil) yet he can hit the big apple like anyone else. So basically, this guy's a loose cannon who's here to stir up shit. (a bit like Chavez, though by comparison Chavez is pretty entertaining, if not credibly sensible)
  20. Alternative delivery is an interesting subject. Bands are starting to release their records on USB sticks now...Barenaked Ladies just did this. A vinyl box set from Wilco would sure be nice. eventually.
  21. WTF, where did 20 years go?? Preview of the DVD: http://www.cowboyjunkies.com/ Ryan Adams, Vik Chestnutt, and Natalie Merchant are on this. And way too many microphones.
  22. I spent the summer in PA...ironic since I lived in Montreal and we had the Olympics that year. I broke my foot and was in a cast for those exact two weeks, got the cast off on my birthday. Musically, I remember hearing "Afternoon Delight" on the radio a lot. I was 11, what the hell did I know.
