Don't waste a hundred and fifty clams on that band. There should be mandatory retirement for groups like Pearl Jam! (they really should've retired on the day Nirvana released Nevermind, I thought everyone knew that...)

I dunno, listening to Beethoven tends to knock me flat on my ass...same as Coltrane. But I'll be the first to admit I'm not musically gifted in any way. All my attempts to play instruments have been horribly pathetic.

Righton, Neil is a great example. His bout of epilepsy has always limited his technical skill - speed, accuracy, etc - but he has created some of the most soulful, memorable guitar solos of all time. Especially during the mid 70's; just listen to Cortez The Killer, or Powderfinger, or Like A Hurricane, and tell me that guy's not a "musical genius". And up until recently he could even channel Hendrix on occasion. I have trouble thinking of too many fave music artists who were formally schooled. Bruce Cockburn is one for sure, but I don't think I could name very many.

I didn't say they didn't study music, but they didn't have much formal music theory - that was your original thesis, right? Coltrane understood the intricacies of jazz on a plane most of us can't relate to. If the question was simply "can they read sheet music" then maybe the answer is different again.

Just keep in mind that the Beatles appeared at a time when jazz snobbery was in full bloom. They were dismissed outright by "real music lovers" as just bubblegum pop. My father-in-law and his brothers played jazz in a band in those days, to hear them tell it, they still think the Beatles are crap - "guys who can't even play their instruments". Whatever..

Many of the jazz greats who really changed the game....Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman...had little if any formal training.

also check out Reviving Ophelia.

Thanks for the info..... so if you look at the stadium, my guess is they might only sell seats in sections 120 to 110 (and the sections above those)....maybe 5000 tix altogether? Or less? It should be an interesting show. The stage could take up all of the grass between the mound and home plate. Kind of cozy for a concert in a big ballpark.

Like how Bob Dylan described hearing Robert Johnson or Woody for the first time. Or as Van Morrison wrote, "it stoned me like Jelly Roll". I agree in general, it seems many current performers are pretty ignorant of their trade.
-
True, but -- they all worked their asses off to become decent musicians. Naturally gifted...I don't know. Picking up music does seem to come a lot easier to some than others. Songwriting takes some discipline. I think Tweedy is a great arranger, and is benefiting from having really skilled musicians help with that. Btw, is Nels classically trained? I read yesterday that someone showed him how to play a scale and he sort of took off from there.

All I could find too...for now. Look for a tall guy with a motorcycle helmet right behind you, that'll be me.

feeding frenzy in another.....7 minutes. Good luck folks, let's hope this isn't GA.

Dunno about that. I think it's generally believed Dylan coined the name 4TA as a retort against Simon & Garfunkel or the Beatles, who (he felt) kept ripping off his tunes.

Yeah I used to carry a canvas 'World Famous' kind of bag, got 'em at the army surplus store back in the day. Hipsters all had them, so hey. I had a couple and never managed to wear them out. Didn't study much either tho.

Camping in NYS (Allegany), starting Thursday.

There's still 4 days to go....theoretically ww.net could still have a pre- pre- sale say on Thursday. At least that's what I'm hoping for.
-
Well, yeah...because U2 are about 20 years past irrelevence, and Pearl Jam is about the worst excuse for a rock band I've ever heard.

What Will We Learn During/From Tonight's Debate?
W(TF) replied to Atticus's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
The check is in the mail. -
I've still only seen the two on Youtube...guess I don't watch much tv these days. None of this really matters imho. If Wilco songs get played in elevators, does anyone get bent out of shape? TV matters about as much to me as that. Now if Wilco songs were being played at neo-nazi rallies, that would be cause for concern.

WW gets the wilcovangelist award for today 22-07-2007! I had some family over for a bbq today, played some cool tunes for them but first made sure they heard ALL of SBS before I played anything else. I prefer to let the music do the talking...it slowly enters the subconscious until ppl kind of look up funny, all groggy and dazed. "huh? like, what WAS that?" Didn't get that reaction today, everyone was too busy splashing in the pool. Oh well at least my brother's a fan.
