I've had the chance to see Peter Buck play live several times a year with his other projects (Minus 5 and the Venus 3 with Robyn Hitchcock). Always in small venues. Those experiences really biased my view of Accelerate when it came out, since it's more of a Peter Buck guitar fest with some Michael Stipe vocal layering (and some Robyn H influences, I suspect). I like it alot, but I won't even try ranking it with Wilco's last three. I really doubt they will play Wilco (the Song). After inserting the word Colbert into the premiere performance, it just wouldn't be the same with 'O'Brian'

I concur on Jesse Sykes. The Sweet Hereafter's guitar player, Phil Wandscher, is really good, and Jesse's wonderful. This is a great lineup, there are a number of good local musicians playing as well. Marymoor is the site of my favorite Wilco show ever. It's a nice venue, with good beer concessions!

Nice shot! Here are a couple of recent Howe Gelb photos from a show in Oct 2008. I still can't say for sure, but during the encore, I yelled out Hey Howe, and got an instant reaction from Giovanni looking right at me. I gave him a thumbs up and he returned it, but I'm still not sure it was him, or if he's been taken for him before and was humoring me. He played guitar like him though, and the few times he sang, it sounded like him. Yet, I can't say I'm sure, and why he'd be incognito is also a mystery. Excellent, you must have had a press pass, unlike my undercover shots from the 3rd row? If Giovanni Ferrario isn't an alias for Howe Gelb, then he must be his long lost twin. Any thoughts on that? I really thought it was Howe, and he obviously has a connection with PJ.

This was the best show I've seen since Wilco outside in Marymoor Park a few years ago. It also had the best fans I've seen since then, paying attention, and highly appreciative. Thanks for coming this way Ms. Harvey.

That's too funny, based on my own experiences. I'm the only big Wilco fan around this house, everyone else just sorta tolerates it (while gripping under their breath). My 'better half' does think they are really great live based on 3 shows, but doesn't enjoy listening to the recordings all that much. My kids love to give me grief about Wilco. (Not that I've never given my daughter grief about Jason Mraz )

If you want to take that perspective, 'Real Uncle Tupelo' died before 'Real Wilco', as you define it, was born. Yeah, the past won't happen again. Bring on the future with respect to the past, I say. The future will hold some amazing new musical experiences, to be sure, but I'm sorry that Jay won't be contributing to them anymore, with any band, Wilco or not.

I've had some good experiences over the years taking my kids to shows, but I've been pretty careful about which ones, and I never took them before age 10 or so except for dorky zoo concerts and such. Usually seated versus standing room ones, and definitely with regard to content. I'm not taking them to PJ Harvey next month, that's for sure. Never for Wilco though, partly out of my own selfish desire to enjoy the show without dealing with it. If you ask them, I'd bet they'd say the best shows were the Decemberists, Crowded House, and Calexico in smaller theater settings on several occasion

So did I. It was Neil solo acoustic and somehow I'd gotten 8th row center seats. The drunk woman behind me would not stop through the whole show. I'm surprised Neil didn't tell her to shut the hell up, since she was that close. Jeff would've, knowing him. I think it's appropriate for encores (as things are reaching their conclusion, in other words) and when the band requests it. Otherwise, we didn't pay to hear karaoke.
