A Thread for Musical Blasphemy you Truly Believe
PopTodd replied to hardwood floor's topic in Someone Else's Song
While not quite "blasphemy" I will disagree, if only for the fact that they sparked the whole Madchester scene. If not for their followers, I would agree. One classic album and a pretty good follow-up are not the things of legend. I will say that The La's, on the other hand, probably do. Again: one classic album. But nothing else. And one cannot really point to a whole lot of individual bands that they inspired, let alone an entire movement. -
And you must know this one:

After reading a review of the new Janelle Monae that compared her to Nona in her solo career, I am intrigued. Especially about her first solo album: How badly do I need this? What are your thoughts?

Trying to think of some of the ones that aren't too obvious: Shugo Tokumaru - "Katachi" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-WM-x__BOk Janelle Monae - "Dance Apocalyptic" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaMBagakSdM Bombino - "Amidnine" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRZ-ItjXQ9w The Replacements - "I'm Not Sayin'" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xwfTGxg_KE Lee Renaldo & The Dust - "Lecce, Leaving" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPBFyjmLGk8 Cate Le Bon - "Are You With Me Now?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-Vw49KM6JU

Black Ensemble Theater: Curtis Mayfield Story
PopTodd replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
It was phenomenal. I mean, some of the dialogue was a little stilted, but the performances--especially the singing--were phenomenal. And, you really can't argue with the songs, themselves. Well-worth the price of admission. -
Yeah, this article was published back in Feb. But I missed it, and nobody here seemed to notice either. Or, at least, they didn't post about it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/0 ... 39862.html Never a fan of his music, but his drawings were amazing. And he seemed like a good soul, despite being genuinely disturbed.

Oh, there are some great songs on there, to be sure: "Achin' to Be", "I'll Be You", "Talent Show", and a couple more. But, as a whole... meh.

Don't Tell a Soul is a horrible starting point. Their worst album. Go with Tim (their best) or Let It Be (their "classic") or Pleased to Meet Me (their most-accessible). From those three you can go anywhere in their catalogue and "get it." Whether or not you like "it" is, of course, a matter of taste.

You are correct. However, I think that The Mats' sound is more-easily digested than Television, which kinda makes folks who love them (like me) baffled that others don't see the same things that we do. I mean, I love Television, too. But as spiky as their sound is, it's easier for me to get how somebody might not like them. Not so with The Replacements. Does that argument make sense? postscript: If someone came here and called Television "worthless" I would, nonetheless, loose all respect for their opinion on things musical.

One of the most-inspired and most-inspiring rock bands to ever pick up their instruments. When I hear them, it makes me want to first, sing along and, second, go and write a damn song.

Steak tartar makes me nervous every time I eat it (not often). But still, the couple of times that I have had it, I really liked it.

Chopped liver. But, there are very few places that make it well. Only one or two, really. But, oh man... if I get it from Shaevitz in Highland Park, IL, it's heaven!
