  1. Nice choice, yourself! (Was it inspired by the "Crazy Guitar Solo" thread?) I need to pick up some Sonny. Used to have Seize the Rainbow, but that was on cassette and it was a long time ago. I loved it, but it is now long gone. I'm thinking that Ask the Ages is first on the list for Sharrock albums. You agree?
  2. Was that Andy Taylor (Duran Duran)? He was actually pretty good at those kinds of things.
  3. My favorite guitar player of all time. Something about the way that he plays the chaos – it's perfect. Oh, and another great, chaotic guitar solo: "Chickamauga" - Uncle Tupelo EDIT: And I will link you to a song that I did that has a chaotic solo. Because it does: "Bound to Fail" Honestly, I am not very happy with the overall way that this one turned out. Not very happy at all. But I do like the very stupid, chaotic guitar solo.
  4. "Love Comes in Spurts" - Richard Hell & The Voidoids (R.I.P. Robert Quine)
  5. Another one by Yep. (the band who I linked to on the first page of this thread -- covering "Waterloo Sunset"). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiatCi2nN7U Now they redefine "Rocket Man". Such a great, great cover. This album is, at this time, my number 1 of 2011. Great stuff. EDIT: They also do a great version of "Hesitating Beauty" on the same album.
  6. Friday, 5/20 at 4:00 p.m. on WLUW FM in Chicago (88.7 FM). It's also streaming, live online . So, if you're out of range (which most of you are), there you go. I've played on this show once before, about a year ago, and it's a lot of fun. Really nice people who just love music. Hope you can tune in. And, if you can't, I'll post the link for streaming audio once it"s available for those of you who care. (I do have streaming audio from my last appearance up at my website, if you're interested.) And, I have more information up with links and all that, if you are interested. Due to VC polici
  7. There is an "other" option if you know of one. I know that there have to be others, I just couldn't think of them.
  8. I know that there are more than this. And I expect The Jesus and Mary Chain to run away with it in a landslide. Still... just in keeping with the recent spate of threads.
  9. Do The Flying Burrito Brothers count? I mean, they can fly... How about Wings? And: Ducks Deluxe
  10. I used to have a Harmony-build Silvertone, that I sold back in 1997 or so. It was a super-cool looking guitar. But, honestly, it was a piece of crap and played like one. The only positive to the thing (beside the excellent looks and blue metallic flake paint job) were the DeArmond pickups. So yeah, mine was exactly like this one, but with that aforementioned blue metallic flake finish: Piece of shit.
  11. We went to see a movie at the theater over the weekend and there was a guy there wearing a "Reefer Madness" t-shirt. I commented on it and we laughed a bit. My son, a bona-fide film geek before he has even hit his teenage years, of course, had to know about it. When we got home, he jumped right on to Netflix, found it, and watched the whole thing. He loved it -- the whole kitsch factor. Immediately after, he jumped onto Amazon, found a used copy for 60¢, handed me his money (including shipping) and asked me to order it for him. It's on its way. (I have seen it, and know that there is nothing
  12. Have you heard that Tony Hazzard record? It's awesome.
  13. (Streaming at NPR.org) And then:
  14. I would love to hear Jeff do a cover of "Dark End of the Street". Or maybe something by Nick Lowe -- "Here Comes the Weekend" would be fun, or "Teacher, Teacher".
  15. So, this is becoming a bit more involved (are you surprised?); it's going to be a double EP. I'm still going to record the songs solo and acoustic. And I am going to release those songs as an EP called "Well-Enough Alone". But then, I am going to take the same takes of those same songs, and remix/produce them a bit more, and release THOSE as a second EP called "Can't Leave Well-Enough Alone". I think that I am going to make them available for purchase/download either together or separately. Maybe I'll tack on some bonus stuff as an premium for getting them both. Who knows? Anyway, recording
  16. I never followed up on this post from a couple of months ago. I picked up the record and am totally in love with it. I think that it holds up even next to the classic debut. There are not quite as many high spots that the s/t, but there are still many, many high spots. And those are every bit as good as the best moments on the debut. Still sound beautiful. Still wonderfully weird. Something like if Jonathan Richman were three sisters with gorgeous voices. Love. Love. Love.
  17. These are not (necessarily) the "classic" artists and songs, but these are still damn good collections with a great overview of the sound. Highly recommended comps: Again, not a part of the 1960's "classic" cannon, but an undeniable classic, nonetheless, from a central figure in the whole Birmingham scene: Other than that, I am with you in looking for more on this sound. It is a great one.
  18. Today I spent the day hanging out with my oldest - going out to lunch and record shopping. All at his request. Damn that was fun! He's 11.
  19. My favorite SFA album is Radiator, but that is NOT on the mellow side at all. Just on the freaking genius side. as to my np: for the day:
