I've been recording this damn thing on and off since April, 2008. It's been rewarding, frustrating, and educational. It's coming out pretty soon, now and, as long as I've been tracking my movements at another site, I thought I'd make the link available to all of you. Anyway, it's all HERE. Do with it what you will. I hope it's at least interesting for you.

Also ESSENTIAL: Damn, I love The Move.

(parenthetical portions of song titles annoy me)

You like it. You are the song's papa. That's all that matters. Do you have the song posted anywhere on the internet? Just copy the link to a stream. If you don't... PM forthcoming. -
Lee's behind-the-back grab last night was spectacular in that he made it look so ordinary. He pitched great, and the lineup was... great. Phils in 5.

But you could also just remove the parens. and call it "My Love May Have To Do". It's your song, but that's a thought. Also... send me a link and I'll give 'er a listen. -

I generally dislike the practice, as well. However, I admit to have written one song with a parenthetical: "Say You Will (A Reluctant Soldier's Plea)" The reasoning: I felt that the phase "Say you will" was the obvious, and correct title for the song. But, the "Reluctant Soldier..." part was, I felt, necessary to clarify the setting; and, IMO, it also adds emotional resonance. I considered "A Reluctant Soldier's Plea" as the original, standalone, title. But, for obvious reasons (none of those words appear anywhere in the lyric of the song), I dismissed it, so I used the refrain as the titl -

Which XTC? Because they went through a lot of permutations, including their (self-consciously) psychedelic alter-ego The Dukes of Stratosphear. But any of several of their albums can be lumped into the psych cannon -- Skylarking and Oranges and Lemons, in particular. Just curious.

BJM are a good example. Of course I will forget essential ones. But I think of the Dandys as more of a pop band than psych. Their only connection to psych is their well-documented fued with the BJM. (But that is a lot of fun to read about.) Another modern psych band, as long as we're back on the subject: Cornelius They even have the visuals in their live show to match. And, would you include Neutral Milk Hotel ? At first blush, they didn't occur to me. But the dreamlike imagery in their lyrics; the adventurous arrangements imply to me that they do fit that definition.

Please understand that my list of the bands from "my" era (Flaming Lips, et. al.) was not meant to place any of those bands in the same category of the "essential" albums that inspired/began this thread. Although, for academic purposes, it would make a good topic for discussion, to trace the influence and progression from A to B. But that would be the only context in which such discussion would be pertinent, methinks.

The best tracks of 2009: your favourite picks

I don't understand this post. -
How is that? I saw them on that tour and they were ridiculous!

I'm thinking "My" era now, too. For that I'll list a few, as any good music geek will: Flaming Lips - Transmissions From the Satellite Heart Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician Spacemen 3 - Taking Drugs to Make Music To Take Drugs To Bongwater - Double Bummer Meat Puppets - Up On the Sun The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy Stone Roses - Stone Roses Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating Through Space My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique (Yes, I DO include this album in there, as I do...) De La Soul -

Velvet Crush - Teenage Symphonies to God Os Mutantes - Mutantes Beastie Boys - Check Your Head The Webb Brothers - Maroon Jimmy Cliff, et. al. - The Harder They Come (OST)

It's amazing. But I don't really lump that album in with the psychedelic bunch; I think of it more as orchestral pop. But, whatever. And, if you do, then what about: Love - Forever Changes ?

Just adding the video clip for my pick: Cornershop - "Who Fingered Rock & roll?" -
that list is ridiculous. I mean, there are some good choices, but... No: 13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators Possibly THE most-essential psych album. (IMO) Also, why only touch on only English-language psych? There are classics by Le Orme and Os Mutantes that really do merit inclusion here, if only as the token representatives of the international scope of the movement. EDIT: And Frank Zappa would be turning over in his grave at being lumped in with that psychedelic hippie music. Very anti- anything hippie (except the sex and love part), if I remembe

These are just some general comments regarding the overall sound/feel of the album, based upon one and ONLY one listen: First off, the songwriting is, overall, very solid; good melodies and performances. There is a very solidly grounded Americana feel here that is made a bit more interesting by your British accent. It doesn't really fit, but in a good way. My favorite song -- the one that stuck with me the most -- is "On the Five String". A really good hook. And, throughout the entire listen, it's sounds like you're having fun with that one. If you want my one (again, kneejerk) critique, i

*sigh* I wrote one. Here's the link: "Block Block" Despite what you may think, I did not start this thread simply to whore this song; I am legitimately trying to put together a mix with said theme. Anyway. There's one more.

I know that somebody already mentioned June Carter and Johnny Cash. But, specifically, I wanna mention: "Jackson" Classic. EDIT: So yeah, in other words, I'm with stooka on this one.

Thanks! PM sent! Looking forward to hearing it and commenting.

How do you like it? They are one of my favorite bands of the late 80's/early 90's. I only wish I had seen them live, when I had the chance. Damnit!
