    You And I

I hear ya, I feel that way at times about "you never know".

    You And I

Well I'm sorry that the Volkswagon thing didn't fly with you. The silver lining is that some people maybe got turned on to Wilco via those commericals and I think that is cool. As far as You and I, what specifically causes you to skip it? Just interested.

    You And I

I think "One Wing" is awesome, and I'm not trying to say people can't not like "you and I " (that would be weird and stupid). And I was baiting someone to call me a dad rocker

    You And I

What do I stand to gain? I'm interested in what makes us tick. Why one person can hear something one way and another be completely on the other side. I like to explore and debate these differences, and I think bullshit gets in the way of having a real conversation about it. What does anyone gain from You and I sucks? I'd rather someone say, like you did, that I can get simple pop from anywhere. And I would ask did the Beatles ever make simple pop songs, do those songs suck? Does "In My Life" suck? That's just an example of a real conversation that can never take place if we just say n

Not vacation movies, The Vacation Movies. (I hope that makes a difference for you). As far as the opinion thing, I don't know, I'm not feeling like I'm being roundabout. I'm actually trying to clearly and in a straightforward way, say I hear your opinion and I question the motives. That is all. I'm serious, I just had a brother in law tell me how much crap KOL are now. That opinion is not rooted in any objective reality. The music hasn't changed, just the popularity and album sales. That is my point. Now if you truly "hate" or think You and I "sucks", "worst song ever" etc, cool.

Speed Racer, you always challenge me about stating that someone's opinion is wrong (maybe that should tell me something). I'm not telling anyone anything, except my view on this. Of course my statement doesn't hold true for 100% of posters on Via Chicago, but we all know what I'm talking about. I think this last Wilco record has drawn the line in the sand with this arguement. It isn't like someone saying, "I don't like Grizzly Bear, it just doesn't do anything for me". I think most could see both sides of that coin. I think Tweedy said it best when he joked about how offensive You and I is

    You And I

Oh, I'm going to call this how I see it. I think the internet does allow bomb throwing without consequence, but in terms of the music, I think this outspoken loathing of "You and I" is pure indie rock credibility crap. This is the same crap that causes people to completely discredit Kings of Leon because they have achieved wide ranging success. (has the actual music really changed that much between their first record and the last?????) This is of course seen in all genres. I'm by no means a heavy metal guru but I found the outcry quite silly when Metallica released the Black Album.

I rarely listen myself. You are missing nothing, unless you have a sweet college station in town, which we do in Columbia. was Jesus Etc ever played in normal rotation?
  9. My son cracks me up with the non kids songs he gets into. He really got into a Chris Knight song about trains that came on the radio on Sunday. He also loves singing "Wilco loves you baby!" Cool kid. It is cute, every time he hears me singing along in the car to a song he asks, "Wilco Daddy?" I say "No, Conor Oberst, No Flaming Lips, No Fruit Bats, etc" I always wonder if he thinks these band names are weird.
  10. Word of caution if this is your first child: No matter how cool your musical tastes and record collection are, your son will prefer sing a longs with Barney or Elmo. I swear the other night I was playing trains with my son who is almost three and we were within two feet of my vinyl record collection (hundreds of unbelievable records) and we were listening to Barney on cassette. Now do I get the father of the year award for not questioning this madness? "I love you, you love me, we're best friends like friends should be.............
  11. It seems that there is so much music being made and I know we all have our favorites. There is no way that some people won't get sadly overlooked as time passes. Do you ever think about what obscure/overlooked/underappreicated musicians/bands/artists you would love to turn someone on to. You know, like when you first discovered Nick Drake or Big Star back in the day. I think I would love to hand my son the complete Hayden discography one day. or the first 4 or 5 Richard Buckner records.
  12. white album? listening to nothing? I can't figure out how to post a picture either

    You And I

This got me thinking again. What has Wilco released to radio? Outside of Chicago. What have you guys heard in regular rotation. Here is my list of what I believe are the offically promoted singles. 1. Box Full of Letters Official Single 2. Outta Site (Outta Mind) Official Single 3. California Stars Official Promo Single 4. Can't Stand It Official Single 5. A Shot In The Arm Official Single 6. Secrets Of The Sea Regular Radio Play 7. Heavy Metal Drummer Regular Radio Play 8. War On War

    You And I

Yeah, some of it is location. Our local AAA here in Columbia MO have played the following since I moved here in 2000: Secret of The Sea, Heavy Metal Drummer, Jesus Etc (briefly), The Late Greats, What Light, You Never Know, You and I. I never heard I'm a Wheel. Anyway, I'm not sure what I'm even asking for, other than not just letting this album float away in terms of opportunity. I think Wilco has missed opportunity for some singles, or maybe they would have caught on if they were single material? Who know.

    You And I

I think this is interesting. I know the world has changed and the idea of pushing a single with your A & R guy leading the way and buying off DJ's is likely old school, but I think anyone responsible for the marketing of Wilco who is listening to Wilco (The Album) would push "BBN" to college radio and modern rock and push "You and I" to everywhere else. And the whole idea of pushing the best/most creative/stunning artistic vs. the most eligible to get a large amount of folk interested is not what pushing a single is about. Did Neil Young release "Heart of Gold" or "Cimmanon Girl" as

    You And I

I guess you missed the part about not focusing on the merits of the song. Just whether it is single material? I also realized I screwed up in my earlier post. I personally think that "I'm A Wheel" and "Nothingsevergoingtostandinourwayagain" were sure fire hits. I mean why is "Nothings..." not a theme song for a TV show?

    You And I

I finally heard "You and I" on our AAA radio station over the weekend. The station had been playing "You Never Know" prior to that. Now I want to say that this post isn't about the musical merits of the song, but just a statement on the topic of pushing a single. From the first time I heard "You and I" I thought this was easily the best shot at a big single since "Outtasite/Outtamind". Once again, in the context of what works on radio. I think the song is super catchy, easily digestable lyrically, and has the whole w/Feist aspect for the indie kids to get excited about. Unfortunate

  20. Good Point. I am going through stage where I'm into freak folk, while a few months back I was into great songcraft (beatles), and before that, probably an early 90's alt phase. I've come to realize that I like all kinds of things and I don't have to force a comparison for the sake of working to make sense of it all. Comparing a Wilco song on a tv performance to a Flaming Lips peformance. Why? Musical peers? Who said? Some critic. I think we would all benefit from just asking ourselves, does it move us or not. If the new Lips record slays for you, that is cool, but why do we have to en
  21. I have liked what I have seen. I actually think that dad makes the show, and I love the Office and haven't felt a blatant Michael Scott vibe. I now have three network citcoms I can watch. wowee zowee
  22. I am actually looking forward to Dreamin Man. Harvest Moon was the first Neil album I ever purchased and I'm kind of hoping the live set will be slightly stripped down. I remember the SNL he did at the time, solo acoustic, man that was sweet. I will say that I was a tad disapointed in the album art I saw for Dreamin Man. I can be anal about these things, but it didn't seem to match the theme of the previous 3 archive performance series releases. You know, the vinyl and black and white photo stuff.
  23. Neil has probably postponed it to release a quazi concept album about a new brand of electric shaver he is into.
