  1. What was the reception like for Neil's Harvest Moon shows? I'm sure I read at the time there was some hostility to the lack of older material and the breviety of the shows. Was that the case? Marillion do have an amazing relationship with their fanbase. When they were struggling a few years ago they asked the fans to pre-order the album about two years in advance so that they could afford to make it!!!. There is also a famous case when Marillion couldn't afford to tour the US. A group of fans set up an internet account and collected about $20,000 and gave it to the band so they would come an
  2. I have this record and really like it. As mentioned above it has elements of a lot of "americana" albums and artists. The two tracks which jump out are 'Mermaid Parade' and the stunning 'Los Angeles'. The later is so obviously indebted to Neil Young (circa 'Zuma') that, if it wasn't so good, you would accuse Matthew Houck of plagerism. In fact the instrumental passages remind me of 'Words' from 'Harvest'. However, as its the best song I've heard this year I'll let him off. If you're gonna rip off someone may as well be Neil. Have either of you heard any of his other records. On the basis o
  3. Thanks for that. I think I saw 'who killed the bird' many many years ago on yhs. If I recall it is a collection of videos, interviews and live performances. Good stuff if my memory serves.
  4. ....that is the Chapel Show you are referring to right? The Union Chapel, London, about three months ago?
  5. I'll second that. The gig that is not the need to lighten up!! That Chapel show was a thing of beauty. If I recall Jeff mentioned the inappropriateness of the Ruling class in the Union Chapel during the show.
  6. I picked up the 10" vinyl EP that came out last year for 'Record Store' day. Its a great little package, record at the local record store in Louisville. Has a lovely version of Dondante on there. Hopefully a new record should see the light of day soon. I believe they will be playing some new material on the last day of the run of the upcoming album-themed shows. 'Evil Urges and Beyond'. I revisted Evil Urges yesterday and have warmed to it somewhat. A bit of editing and it would be far better. If you cut it down to ten tracks (similar to 'Z') you have a great album.
  7. It's an interesting question and really depends on the band I suppose. I saw Floyd in 1994 (earl's court) and Genesis in 2007 and they were good shows. But I knew exactly what was coming and there was no chances of either band kicking in to a rendition of 'Dogs' or 'Giant Hogweed' respectively. I like the recent trend of artists playing themed shows. My Morning Jacket are doing a series of shows performing each album in their entirety with associated b-sides etc. Similarly Marillion (yes Marillion!!) do events focusing of specific albums or playing just the 10 min plus tracks etc. (If you us
  8. Thought I'd jump in here and ask for some guidance on Rush. I have three of their records and am looking to pick up some more. I have 'Roll the Bones', 'Permanent Waves' and 'Moving Pictures', all of which I love. Where do I go next? Cheers.
  9. That dvd is pretty special. It was already a great album before I saw it but when you watch Cabin Fever it makes you appreciate it even more. Enjoy the show. p.s: Are there any other good Crowes DVD's worth picking up?
  10. As you can see earlier in this thread I was not particularly excited about Roger taking The Wall on the road again. I stubbornbly refused to get tickets, preferring to focus my money on younger artists with new material to peddle (and I have seen some great shows this year). Well I'm regretting that now. Reading that review has me longing to be there. It brings back memories of listening to the album in the early 80's, pouring over the lyric sheet and really buying into the whole 'package'. Some times its good to look back and revel in old music. Hell, I'm even go to see a Genesis tribute
  11. Thanks vacant...I think you've managed to articulate what I was trying to say. I also think, lyrically, I'm a lot more critical as I've got older, which is a bit of a failing in some respects. When I hear clunky lyrics, like those of that first new track, I pick up on them much quicker than when I was young and listening to Rust Never Sleeps and Comes a Time. That said I do love the 'feel' of the new tracks I've heard and 'Love and War' and 'Walk with me' are good. 'Hitchhiker' with that production should sound great.
  12. I think people missed my point. Ambulance Blues is a classic. A great song off a great album. My point was that I never warmed to the lyrics (rhyming 'jive' with 'half past five' for example). The genius of Neil Young is that its the 'feeling' and soul in his songs that makes them classics rather than the lyrics (in my opinion). Certain artists place great stock in words. Neil is more ragged in his wordplay. Not a bad thing, but true non-the-less. 'Ragged Glory' is another one of my favourite records but the lyrics are generally average. Now if we're talking about 'clunkers' then Motocycle
  13. That track is a lot better. I'm loving the production. I was thinking about my previous post where I questioned the lyrics to the the first track we heard. I was listening to 'On The Beach' this morning, which I view as Neils crowing achievement, and it occured to me that some of the lyrics on that record are pretty shocking too. Read the words, and this may be a hanging offence!, to Ambulance Blues. They are not great either. Neil's never been about the lyrics in the same way as Dylan or Nick Cave. Its always about the holistic. Maybe, when I hear the new album as one piece it may make more
  14. Those lyrics are dreadful. I actually like the production and sound of the song. However the words sound like they were written by a ten year old.
  15. Buffalo Springfield will be reunited at this years Bridge School benefit shows. They will be headlining both nights. There has been no confirmation of who will be involved but presumably Neil, Stills and Furay at least.
  16. It's not an artist you see mentioned here very often but how about: Jean Michel Jarre. His earlier albums are very nice night music. He also did a piece called 'Waiting for Cousteau', a forty-five minute ambient song which is perfect for insomnia (in a good way, not a critisim)
  17. The one I never picked up was 'done with mirrors'. I think it has 'Let The Music Do The Talking' on it but is there anything else worth hearing on that record. The cover art was shocking aswell if I recall. Also, as Sir Stewart mentions, 'Live Bootleg' is worthy of attention. That is a great live album, especially side four which rocks.
  18. I agree that Nine Lives is actually a pretty good album. Jush Push Play I can live without. As a result of this thread I also went back and re-visited Pump and Permanent Vacation, both of which are really great records.
  19. Sorry Ghost. I was looking on the Jayhawk fanpage. One of the threads on there mentions new recordings. http://www.jayhawksfanpage.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=12
  20. and.......it looks like there will be a NEW jayhawks album in the future. http://www.americana-uk.com/auk/modu...29&page_id=370 Q: Okay, so here's the obvious question on everyones mind; is there going to be a new Jayhawks album in the future? A: I definitely think it's going to happen. Right now it's just about working out the time, but I definitely think there'll be a new Jayhawks album. I look forward to be doing both things right now, my own records and working with The Jayhawks. Wow!!
  21. I've not seen the tracklists yet but there is a review of the Legacy editions of both HTH and TMGG inthe most recent Uncut magazine. The review is pretty sparce but it makes reference to nearly 30 bonus tracks. The TTGG bonus disc features the '18 Mystery Demos', recorded circa 1992 which is apparently a Basement Tapes type set. Looking on Amazon it says they are due in October 2010 but currently unavailable. Really looking forward to hearing these as I felt the Music from the North Country was a really strong retrospective featuring a wealth of great unreleased material.
  22. The new album is due shortly. "Belle and Sebastian Write About Love". You can hear a couple of new songs, along with some documentary stuff on their website. Sounds promising. The last album was very good. http://pitchfork.com/news/39945-hear-two-new-belle-and-sebastian-songs/
  23. Pleasantly surprised to see Belle and Sebastian figuring so highly. They seem to be popular of on your side of the pond. And NMH 'Holland 1945' is a great song.
  24. Yeah, thanks for that. It looks like an amzing book. If you type Tom Waits into google images you get a good indication of the wealth of incredible photos that could be included in this package.
  25. A great idea for a thread: I have put togehter a compilation of Angelo Badalamenti tracks from his soundtrack work with David Lynch. It's perfect night music. All three twin peaks soundtracks are great. The Bladerunner soundtrack is also great for the nighttime. How about 'In A Silent Way' by Miles Davis. a beautiful piece of work that I have had on many times whilst drifting in and out of sleep. Mercury Rev put out an instrumental album a couple of years ago called 'Strange Attractor' which is also very good. It came as a free download when you brought (the criminally overlooked) 'Snowf
