I agree it's a very impressionistic song. Seems very much about the emptiness of consumerism (the ATM stuff, the leaves "filling up shopping bags"), loneliness, doubting himself as an artist (the "hear myself sing" part), the courage of someone who is willing to reject the crass consumerism of America and call bullshit on it all, the desire to start over fresh. "This Machine" is probably a reference to his guitar. Or maybe not.

Vedder is a HUGE Who fan, they have always done the who covers well. I missed this unfortunately. Is it on Youtube?

So my big vacation starts Friday. I will be in Clear lake, Iowa on my birthday (Saturday) followed by Minnesota for most of the week. I plan to hit the Buddy Holly crash site on Saturday since I am staying the night nearby, I heard there is now a path to a monument that is there. Anybody been there? Is it easy to find? As far as Minnesota, I could use ideas for what to do. I already have some suggestions for good used record stores. At approximately 2:31 of Bull Black Nova there is a note that sounds like a mistake that got left in. I like that, even if it was not a mistake. I am loving this album, I find no weaknesses.

I have a lifetime subscription so I am stuck with it no matter what happens, but actually I still like it. Some very good political stuff (Matt Taibbi), articles on interesting people (Cornell West this month), and oh yes, some up to date music news. Having said that, I would be surprised to see Wilco get the cover but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Maybe the gay thing had nothing to do with it but a I still think in the end you are always going to get the most boring winner who does not scare people in some way. When you get 100 million people voting, you are always going to get the lowest common denominator.

Yeah, talk about role reversal. So far these games are so even they are turning on a few minor things. JR Smith and Birdman feed off the crowd energy so I expect them to step up at home. They have been largely invisible.
