  1. From Wilco's Facebook page: "Condolences to the entire Tweedy family on the loss of Jeff's older brother last night. Greg Tweedy 1957-2013, R.I.P."
  2. Jerry's singing was about the emotion in his voice, to me irregardless of the particular condition of the voice. The man could bring me to tears with his ballads. Warren's singing has a similar emotive impact.
  3. Keith was fantastic, the best keys in the Dead, those years he was on the baby grand. '72-74 particularly. I think the band stopped using a real piano and he switched to the electric piano in the late '70's, and combined with his personal life issues, his sound and playing went downhill.
  4. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority on this, but I always liked Donna's singing. I liked it at the time, I was always willing to admit that part of the appeal was watching her on stage swaying that long hair and imagining what I could do with that ! But I still like her singing listening to the recordings. People complain about her being out of tune and wailing, etc, but I don't see that. And it took me a very long time to get used to Brent's singing (and playing) after Keith and Donna were gone.
  5. It was easy. I had been listening/seeing the Dead since '73, by '81 I was simply bored with what they were doing (I couldn't stand to listen to another mid-tempo NFA), perhaps in contrast to all the other music that was happening in my life from '77 on. I started listening to the Heads and Elvis and Clash and Ramones and Television (the list is endless) around '77-'78, moved to Boston in '79, and the music scene was so happening in Boston those years, until the mid to late '80's. I distinctly remember that I could not believe that my friends were still going to Dead shows! Then I went to P
  6. MSG September '90 and Boston September '91 were complete run gems.
  7. I was losing touch with the Dead around '79 or '80, became totally bored with the Dead around '81, and stopped seeing them until fall '87, so I missed that entire period. I've never been impressed with any shows that I've heard from that era, though I know lots of friends and folks around these parts who saw great shows. I think Jerry and the Dead had a golden age from '87 through '91. From '92 on, it was a long, slow death spiral.
  8. I was at that show! I had moved to Boston in August '79. Cops surrounded our car in the parking lot, I was able to gracefully exit and slink away. We all made it inside for a truly memorable show. The Dancin>Franklins is hall of fame material. I will have to play this tomorrow. Thanks for reminding me
  9. In my "don't like but probably considered classics" category: Tennessee Jed, Ramble on Rose, Roses. Used to love the first two years ago, but now they are just too slow and don't really go anywhere. Always skip right by them. For the second category, there's some Brent song that fits the bill, but I can't even think of its name right now.
  10. I need to get this, I was there. Wonder if its still available. They are killing me, releasing shows I was at. Had to buy the May '77 box 'cause I was at the St. Louis show. And I bought Sunshine Daydream just because its Sunshine Daydream. Getting expensive.
  11. I don't remember, which leads me to think he must have gotten all jiggy and whatnot for U.S. Blues. But I do remember the entire show being high energy, a keeper.
  12. That entire show is available, I've watched a good chunk of it, but never made it to that. Wow.
  13. HOLY CRAP! How have I never seen that before??? It's so easy for me to forget that Jerry used to move and emote on stage. But this is off the hook great.
  14. Are you on Spotify? Would love to be able to share those 2 playlists
  15. Very well stated about Days Between, exactly why to me it stood out far above the rest of that batch of new songs.
  16. I thought most of those late era tunes were terrible, horrible actually, with the notable exception of Days Between. I agree, wish they had more time to really get that going, but even still I saw some memorable performances, Albany '95 comes to mind. That song was a good one.
  17. Those RS lists aren't worth anything, but they are always good to generate a discussion
  18. Count me in for the support group. I posted a query on the Wilco page on FB, with no substantive response. I sent a PM to one of the mods here (no response, but that probably didn't go through), I relentlessly tried connecting more times than I can count over the last several days, and then I tracked down Mr. Tinnitus Photography via his website to find out if it was just me or if he had any information. Mr. Bugbee assured me I was not alone, then he soon after gave me the heads up that the forums were up and running. I think that qualifies me for a support group!
