Dave Eggers as sort of like a saint of sorts
quarter23cd replied to Good Old Neon's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I find Mr. Eggers to be both endlessly entertaining and slightly grating at the same time, which is an impressive feat in itself. But a Pirate Store! Oh my. You, sir, are a god among men. -
I was going to write something similar, but couldn't think of the appropriate way to word it. Looking back on that day is actually good for me, just to remind myself about all of it. Honestly, as much as I am angry about everything that has happened since that day, when I think about the day itself, mostly what I feel is sadness for the humanity of it--of people lost and of those who survived, trying to find a way to come to grips with what happened. Anger doesn't even register in my range of emotions--which is a hard thing to explain, because its not that I'm not upset or angry about what

As long as we're doing "I remember when..." stories, I guess I'll add mine. I had just showed up for my first day of some lousy temp job in White Plains (a short train ride north of the city) and I remember knocking on people's office doors, asking where I should go, and thinking it weird/rude that nobody even looked up from their computer screens or acknowledged that I was standing there and talking to them. There was just an eerie vibe. Finally, the manager pulled me aside and told me "A plane hit the Trade Center. You can go home. All our clients are in the city and everybody's freakin

I'm all for grass-roots organization, but the proliferation of RP related stuff on sites like digg (and now spreading to smaller forums, a la VC) has begun to reach the level of obnoxiousness. Then again, I probably only feel that way b/c, although I find his stance refreshingly different from the usual crop of candidates, I don't agree with him on enough issues to actually consider voting for him.

On the bright side, you still have the prospect of that 2010 game to look forward to. I'm just getting my laughs in while I can. As for my Buckeyes, I watched the game Saturday at a sports bar and, sure, they won. But by the end of the game there was a vocal Akron fan laughing and yelling to everyone "You guys are screwed when you have to play a real team!" Nobody argued with him. Fortunately, they play in the Big Ten!

I'm going to have to record this game for posterity. If there is any way this could end in a 0-0 tie, that would be beautiful.

Good band. They should get back together so I could feel cool and hip again instead of being just a guy who mostly listens to bands that don't exist anymore.

Digging back in the memory banks here. After college, I was lucky enough to have a job where I got to sit around all day and read literary journals (oh, and I think I was supposed to be cataloging them for a database...or something). There are an awful lot of university publications you could look at. Here are a few of my old favorites that frequently publish original works: New Orleans Review The Ohio Review Ploughshares If I ever get around to (finally) writing anything worth publishing, I'd start there. As mentioned above, McSweeney's and The Believer are a lot of fun, too. I'd

My O's are only 25 games back. I think they've got 'em right where they want 'em. Time to make their move! C'mon, Gibby! Oh, wait, I guess I can't talk about that here...

I think I can say that the Big Ten is now officially up for grabs. Everybody looks like shit. (some more than others...I'm lookin' at you, Big Blue) Illinois--this could be your year!

I don't remember seeing one, either.

That was nuts. I think I like this season already. Pure chaos.

I was just thinking the same thing. I've maxed out my 60 and it gets pretty ridiculous trying to find something. As cool as 160 sounds, I couldn't imagine filling it. Then again, if capacity keeps going up, maybe at some point we can just do away with lossy formats so we can kill that debate altogether.

I know, I was just kidding. -

...And what's wrong with Cream Puff War? As far as albums, I'll agree that I kind of like a lot of the stuff on Shakedown Street, and yet from that same time period I find Terrapin Station unlistenable. -
For some dumb reason the Illini frequently give OSU fits, so I usually hold off on the Illini jokes. Indiana is my cupcake of choice.

I agree with everything you just said except that I still think Summerteeth sounds overproduced.

New iPods announced, eh? That explains a lot. The new models must have activated the self-destruct mechanism in my formerly rock-solid 2 yr old 60GB iPod Photo, b/c it has been acting really sketchy lately. How much are the classic iPods going for these days?(the website it telling me its down for maintenance) I have zero interest in spending boatloads of dough on a Nano and even less interest in an iPhone. Give me a big ol' chunk of disk space for a reasonably-decent price and I'm a happy camper.

Enjoy. Maybe I should travel and catch some low-hanging fruit, myself. The OSU Alumni Assn politely informed me recently that my ticket application for the Wisconsin game was denied due to overwhelming demand. Its not unusual to get bumped to a crappier game, but I think this is the first time I got shut out altogether for the season. Guess I don't donate enough $.

Michigan's loss to App St looks bad on paper only b/c of the I-AA label, but hey, at least it was the 2x defending national champs. Think of it this way: at worst, it is equivalent to a mid-tier Big Ten team. Michigan fans, just close your eyes and pretend it was Minnesota, if that helps. On the bright side, you've got ND and a Directional-Michigan school coming up on the schedule. If UM can get past Oregon, they should be back in the rankings pretty quickly.

Umm, they're not even sold out yet....!?

That might explain a lot. It doesn't make me love the NPs any more, though.
