  1. Fine cut - there's the country-ish vibe.. The stream quality on that link sounds seriously pre-21st Century though ... rendered to 8kbps?
  2. Ah, boo/hiss. That's ok. Who could blame us for gettign used to the sponteneous suprise release?
  3. Getting the impression this is dropping today.
  4. Well, that was a suprise. Weird song, nice production - certainly one of Wilco's shortest numbers by a significant margin.
  5. Huge Robyn Hitchcock fan here. I'm really looking forward to the new album. I thought his last couple have been pretty lackluster, so I'm glad he's relocated and got Emma on board - hopefully we'll get something in the vein of 2004's excellent, Spooked.
  6. Not just yet, thought about covering "Sunken Waltz" for awhile though.
  7. Gun control has worked in Australia in light of the Port Arthur Massacre of 1996 - gun fatalities are way down from what they were prior to that. Of course, it didn't prevent the hostage seige and two deaths in Sydney at the end of 2014. Both this, the Bataclan and the Pulse nightclub tragedy are all aligned to the same thing (irrespective of gun law tightening): they are the work of disenfranchised, lonely fools who couple themselves up with some demented religious and geopolitical ideology. The primary issue is religious extremism across the board. Whether it's this particular cretin in F
  8. I've been recording some new demoes for my singer-songwriter project, Garden Ruin. Often I'll try out a couple of covers as a bit of a warm up and this outtake from the YHF-era has been in my songbook for awhile, so I thought I'd record a version this afternoon with a couple of guitars and my trusty Korg Monotribe. http://soundcloud.com/garden-ruin/venus-stop-the-train-wilco
  9. I admit it's a pretty scathing comparison, but no late period Byrds album is without its charms. Much like the 2007-2011 Wilco period for me.
  10. My impression of WTA has improved over the years, though for me it's still a half-baked product blighted by some strange production choices. In some ways it reminds me of The Byrds' last couple of albums (particularly 1971's Byrdmaniax). Like that album, WTA's got some nice material on it (One Wing, Everlasting) but stuff like You Never Know and the atrocious Sonny Feeling really damage the listenability for me as a whole. I've always been really vexed by Bull Black Nova - the groove and structure is incredible, but everything else is so forced it just comes off as a pastiche of something Wilc
  11. It holds up incredibly well and for me is their most consistent release since the (criminally) underrated Sky Blue Sky. I can be particularly harsh when it comes to WTA and The Whole Love, but for me I find them hard to get all the way through - especially The Whole Love which I think is way too long and overstuffed. My impression of them both has improved over the years, but they certainly could have been served better by a third party (i.e. a producer other than Tweedy and Co.) My only issue with Star Wars (much like WTA and The Whole Love) is that I find it a little weak lyrically comp
  12. http://www.factmag.com/2015/05/07/pressed-to-the-edge-vinyl/ ^ A great recent article on the current problems with the vinyl revival.
  13. Ugh, Rolling Stone. I really shouldn't expect that much, but really... Notable ommisions in bold: BECK DAVID BYRNE LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III RICHARD THOMPSON SCOTT WALKER JOE STRUMMER/MICK JONES SONIC YOUTH also: Townes Van Zandt (totally agree as per above) Jason Molina (aka Songs: Ohia) Rodney Crowell Cat Power Rufus Wainwright Martha Wainwright Robyn Hitchcock Gene Clarke Syd Barrett Gil Scott-Heron - could be argued this is beat-poetry, but the DNA of modern hip-hop is here along with The Last Poets. Coner Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) Bill Callaghan (aka Smog) I'd also wager that Jeff Tw
  14. No 'Heavy Metal Drummer' or 'Shot In The Arm' - thank goodness. Really interesting list there. The inclusion of Venus Stop The Train is really inspired. By sheer coincidence I was listening to this track on repeat just yesterday - must have been the first time I'd listened to it in a couple of years.
  15. Jeez...out of curiosity I read the Rolling Stone review. Whilst favourable, it's so badly written it nearly made my eyes water.
  16. Nice to see some love for one of the most underrated guitarists on the planet. If I'd had enough room, his work on "No More Shoes" or "Out Of Reaches" would be on my list.
  17. Chronological order. Ry Cooder, Tony Rice, Marc Ribot, Robert Fripp, Annie Clark and Clarence White miss out this time around. The Byrds - Everybody's Been Burned (Roger McGuinn) [1967] McGuinn's electric 12 string Rickenbacker - a gorgeous modal lead against David Crosby's understated accompaniment. Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun (Jimi Hendrix) [1970] Hendrix's guitar playing is like a lucid stream of consciousness. So highly charged and gut wrenching - you can hear the strings being hacked at and sense the heat and smoke coming off everything. Brian Eno - Baby's On Fire (Robert Fripp) [197
  18. Oh, if folks haven't checked it out - last year's Acoustic Dust album is definitely worth your time if you like Lee's stuff. It took me a while to track down since it was only released on a small Spanish label, but the vinyl, flac and mp3 are available at Boomkat. Lovely organic and spacious versions of the solo tracks, including covers by Sandy Denny and Neil Young.
  19. No way - they played Sessions at West 54th? I used to watch that all the time and I've never heard of this before. Great summary, by the way!
  20. Wow, I've got to check those ones out. SY (touring Murray Street) and Wilco (pre-Ghost) on the same night - that would have been incredible. Can't wait!
  21. Where are these liners published?
  22. The spectre of the TTP is here in Australia as well. http://www.theage.com.au/comment/excluding-china-makes-flawed-transpacific-partnership-economic-folly-for-us-20150628-ghycvm.html Also...our Environment Minister recently approving a massive Chinese-owned coal mine on prime agricultural land, endless debate over the benefits/lunacy of fracking, bi-partisan support for sending refugees into indefinite detention offshore, muzzling and theatening jail time for the media/aid workers/whistleblowers, our Prime Minister declaring war on windfarms, building coal ports on the Great Barrier Reef..
