For those of us who are going to Newport Folk Festival in July and are fans of the Milk Carton Kids (I know there are at least 2 of us, twoshedjackson), NFF announced an aftershow on Friday evening for the Milk Carton Kids Revue at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport. It was parked on the street and I got a call one Sunday morning from the police asking me to come down and "talk to the officer standing next to your vehicle". Haven't seen him yet, but he has been on my list for a while. He'll just be an extra bonus at the Nickel Creek show at Taste of Chicago this summer. I'm about 40 minutes early to technically call it tonight, but going to see Willie Watson on Tuesday night. He is formerly of Old Crow Medicine Show and recently released his first solo album, produced by David Rawlings. Should be good.

It was my first time hearing the Nels Cline Singers and it was weird and fascinating. You'd think that with music that experimental that the crowd wouldn't quite stay with it, but people were rapt. Nels broke out every guitar noise trick in the book with slides and coils and pedals, and the percussion was the craziest I've seen -- everything from plastic bottlecaps tied together, to strange vocalizations through a megaphone, to a bunch of paperclips strung together. Nels vocalized a bit too (no words, but sounds). John Stirratt and Glenn Kotche were both there in the audience, too.

Very fun show, with lots of unexpected cameos. Josh was my favorite though Made me laugh.

Chef Boy-ar-dee beef ravioli. Something about the off color and viscousness of that sauce is so repellant and yet seductive.

Some good stuff in there (and good gosh a'mighty that is a long list), but it seems like a lot of these festivals lack a unique point of view these days. The lineups are completely interchangeable.

Have been looking out for that one but haven't seen it airing yet. Thanks for the recommendation, I will keep stalking it!

I hate the Taste, but who am I kidding? I'll be there for Tweedy and for Nickel Creek/Emmylou Harris/Parker Millsap the night before. The last time I was there (Death Cab for Cutie and Calexico a couple of years ago) the lawn crowd where I was could not see the stage and really didn't bother to pay attention to the show at all. Going to try for reserved seats for both nights.

That is so cool! Last time I saw them together, Chris was wearing his guitar and chatting on his cell phone in the alley before the show, and we had a little wave exchange They are the nicest guys ever. What a thrill to play Julian's vintage Martin! I'm a novice player, but I have a vintage Gibson from around the same era, that belonged to my Dad. My most prized possession. I will be seeing them again the first week of May, and really looking forward to it. Weirdly, Nels Cline is playing the same venue the next day, and I'm going to that one too.

Hmmm. After fighting off bronchitis for the last 6 weeks and finally getting the better of it, I got a head cold the other day and my old enemy bronchitis is back. Tweedy, this is your doing! Luckily there is no chance of me hitting on Jay's girlfriend because I am a chica and I don't happen to swing in that direction.

I would like to see the peeps who think they are "hipsters" get together with those who think they are "dad rock" and let them duke it out. They can't be both, people. Hint: they are neither.

Tonight saw Ages and Ages - sounded like a modern Fleetwood Mac, with 3 men and 3 women, all singing complex, syncopated harmony. Great sound! The opener was a local Chicago band, Martin Van Ruin. Similarly excellent. Would definitely go see either band again.

A couple of weeks ago, the Jayhawks changed the image on their facebook home page to show the former Louris-fronted lineup, which I found interesting.
