  1. i do plan on watching some of cnn tomorrow. that'll be more than enough.
  2. i would take the packers in this game every single time. the socialist in me loves green bay. that said, my two favorite teams are cleveland and green bay. between football and elections, i'm very much used to disappointment.
  3. poor tom jefferson. it's appropriate his monument is across the river as his spirit is so absent in washington today. beautiful pix.
  4. credit where it is due, the saints didn't look too bad today with reggie bush. he dominated the field today, and the saints defense held reuben droughns to almost nothing at all.
  5. the worst team in the NFL (saints) just beat the browns. braylon edwards is NOT living up to the hype. sigh. is it too early to say "next year"?
  6. is anyone watching the ABC dramatization tonight? i think we're going to watch the simpsons instead of some partisan version of the events.
  7. i'm SHOCKED no one said STARLIGHT DINER by Lucero yet. big plus for the person on the last page who said CORTEZ THE KILLER by neil young. awesome song. add to the list about 10 mogwai songs.
  8. as long as the leader felt a party identity stronger than a human identity, that rift would happen. trying to turn a tragedy into political captial certainly hastened the split. i guess i'd rather have someone in the oval office who was bad at politics and good at being a human.
  9. that git should have been sacked after his "known unknowns" speech.
  10. i love loose change because i can use it with high school students to teach them to read between the lines. selectively picked facts can make a really good sounding case, until you look deeper. the melting point of steel thing was such an awesome teachable moment. while it's totally true that jet fuel fires can't melt steel, it's not true that the steel needs to melt to lose enough of it's tenstile properties and collapse under weight.
  11. huge bond fan here. casino royale is such a great book. i hope the caning scene (with the chair) is in the movie - that part made me wanna hurl. thunderball is my favorite bond flick, as clunky as the camera work is. there really aren't bond movies i hate, but the more recent ones have been too much flash and not enough substance. the man with the golden gun should have been a lot more awesome. christopher lee is an amazing talent, but the movie deviated too far from the incredible book. such a waste!
  12. it seems like so many people lost people close to them that day. i can't see sept. 11 on a calendar and not think of some of my internet buddies who've lost brothers, sisters, girlfriends and others. fortunately for me, i didn't lose anyone personally that day, but i have solidarity with those who did, as most of us do. i've always been a bitchy person on the fringe of the mainstream, but i felt such a bond with everyone that day (and in the immediate, non-partisan aftermath). it wasn't that we were americans per se, but that we were humans and were forced to look at each other in a big-pic
  13. he lived 150 years in his 44 on this planet. i'd guess he'd have very little regrets professionally. we should all be so lucky.
  14. real wages have tumbled severely since 1978. what was possible then is not as possible now. and i totally agree about savings v credit. i don't even have a credit card (just a debit card with a visa logo). if i can't afford it, i can't afford it.
  15. that's great your job is working out well. i mean that. i don't remember motorola outsourcing domestic jobs the way GM did - and as a mac guy i was keeping an eye on what motorola was doing (home of my favorite chipset).
  16. who is this OUR? be specific. i was speaking specifically of the historical evidence of GM, who began outsourcing heavily in the early 90s to reap record profits from 95-99 only to be on the verge of bankruptcy today. who else outsourced during the nafta/free trade debacle to not reap winfalls but only suffer bad margins?
  17. this simply does not make sense. yes, foreign labor costs are lower, and our companies did take advantage of that. however, they did not pass those lower costs to the consumers as lower prices -- they kept them as profit margin. meanwhile, the formerly well-paid laborers could not afford the goods they once produced. undercutting costs increases profit margins, which in a truly competitive environment will always be small as companies sacrifice profits for marketshare. american businesses outsourcing their production costs did not do that, instead focusing on short term returns. now they're
  18. this is the richest country in the world, and it's also the most stratified economically. our priorities are out of whack to the point where our greed has hamstringed our longview. we've sacrificed our jobs to oursourcing to increase the bottom line return for investors. meanwhile, those displaced workers end up in lower wage jobs without the purchasing power of their old (usually unionized) jobs. these workers cannot buy expensive durable goods and cause companies to faulter. general motors saw the future when they started making cars in mexico at poverty wages while still selling them for
  19. julius and ethyl did very little except have a total rat in their family (ethyl's brother).
  20. i bought my ipod at the apple store because teachers get a 10% discount on hardware (and i didn't push the issue, but i could have gotten it tax free by saying i'd use it in my classroom, which i do, but that seemed greasy). i had a 20gb b&w that i had to send back because it kept pausing. they sent me a remanufactured replacement and it was doing the same thing. turns out the headphones had a short in them. sucks, because the remanufactured one has a bit of a fog in the LCD. i should really send it back. i bought a laptop and got a free nano (after rebate). i didn't even want it, but
  21. i'd rather have racists openly let people know than for them to harbor their resentment in secret.
  22. it's disgusting someone would want to join the kkk, but it shouldn't bar them from a job as long as they perform the job up to par. i'd think the mental capacity one must lack to sympathise with the klan point of view would be enough to keep someone from passing the cop test, but apparently you can be a moron and a klanster kop.
  23. and the horse they rode in on ties with hang time. there's a precipitous drop from there to the rest of their stuff. those two are great.
  24. horrible mix on the conan show. i think the sadies have a bass player. i thought i saw him there. i'm not sure if he was even in the theater.
