Grew up in CT, but have not lived there since the 1990s. Caught some great shows in both Hartford and New Haven back in the day. I still kind of miss the radio stations up that way. Last time I traveled through part of New York and Connecticut, I heard Howlin' Wolf on the radio. Have yet to experience that in Florida!

Cool! Small world.

Oh man, so many great ones...hard to even choose the best. Some in clubs, some in big ol' barns... 09/23/82 - Grateful Dead - Alabama > Greatest Story - Got the place jumpin'... 07/20/84 - Roger Waters - Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun - People were going nuts all through this. 04/28/93 - Warren Zevon - Splendid Isolation - Damn, I miss Warren. Seeing him come out and open with this on acoustic in a little club like Toad's Place was unforgettable. 09/27/94 - Bruce Cockburn - Tokyo - "Grey suited business men/Pissing against a wall/Cut to crumbling guard rail/Slow motion ca

That is good to know. Like most of your posts, very helpful and instructive.

Is anyone on here going to see Wilco's set in person? I didn't even find a thread on it. Just curious if there will be hardcore VC members there, or just tens of thousands of festival goers who have little to no familiarity with the band or its music...

I have an almost inexplicable love for Alabama Getaway. I think it's because it was the opener of my first Dead show.

Wilco #40 in RS Top 40 stoner albums

Pretty much the whole new issue is about weed and how the legalization battle is the next "civil rights" issue after gay marriage. -
Meanwhile, here is another member of the well-armed militia: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/10/4-year-old-shot-father-details_n_3418509.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl16%7Csec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D326670

I am with you 100% on this, Shug. I haven't gotten stoned since about 1988, so I don't often have a desire to listen to the really lysergic Dead! I much prefer the strong songwriting (and relatively shorter versions of songs) from about 1971 on.

I agree with everything but this. I am not a huge Dark Star fan, though I love a good one when I'm in the mood for it. Lovelight is hit or miss for me, but Pigpen's rants could be downright tedious. And I have only heard one or two tolerable versions of The Eleven. I love the Dead, but I am much more a fan of their song-oriented shows (e.g., 1972 set lists) than of their jam-oriented set lists (1969). So even if you don't dig that early psychedelic stuff too much - I go more toward Hendrix and Syd Barrett when I am in a psychedelic frame of mind - you can still love the Dead. There are so many

Anyone seeing Wilco at Bonnaroo? I figure this is the thread to ask, as it qualifies as being "out and about."

Pretty famous show today in Grateful Dead history, 6/10/73 at RFK Stadium...forty years ago. Wow.

Exactly. There are so many great people out there.

They should! They can certainly afford it. Talk about a cause near and dear to their hearts... -
Holy cow, talk about a NSFW Dead clip. I have never seen this whole show (although I have an audio copy), but could they have picked a scene with more nudity?
-
Yeah, I give them props for choosing him as a guest, although I don't think I'd care to hear him singing. At least he's from the rock world.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/joey-covington-jefferson-airplane-drummer-dead-at-67-20130605 Probably not that well-known outside of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna fanatics' circles, but damn. Only 67.

I love this thread. Not sure if it's because I'm a political junkie or just a glutton for punishment. Maybe a little of both.

Wilco — 6/1/13, Nelsonville, OH (Nelsonville Music Festival)
Mr. Heartbreak replied to bböp's topic in After The Show
There were some shows for the ages between 1999 and 2002. -
Yeah, I guess the ticket prices are the worst of the whole thing. I don't know if I would go to the extreme my buddy mountain bed mentioned - storming the box office - but I would honestly feel deflated during a tune or two by those aforementioned guests. Good time for a piss break. Now, some of them have been fine: Taj Mahal, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt. I just cherry picked what I see as "the worst of the lot" in my post. But where are Buddy Guy, or Clapton, or fucking McCartney? Hell, Kenny Wayne Shepherd would be a step in the right direction. At least have guests who rock. Oh well, enough ou

Did the Dead ever play a bad show in CT? Hartford, New Haven...every show I saw there was good to great, and a lot of the ones I missed are pretty stellar too!
-
There's such a thing as keeping relevant, and then there is tainting your own legacy. Based on the many negative comments about this trend that I have seen fans posting on Facebook -- e.g., "We want more Mick Taylor, not ______ (fill in name of special guest here)" -- this has been quite a bad idea. I know for myself, if I paid these guys a hundred dollars an hour as a fan, I wouldn't want any of that time going to lightweights like Taylor Swift or Gwen Stefani.
-
So last night it was Taylor Swift as the "special guest." Before that, this tour has, um, featured such luminaries as Katy Perry, Mary J. Blige, Gwen Stefani, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Sheryl Crow, Dave Grohl and John Mayer. I cannot honestly think of a single syllable of Stones music I would want to hear any of these people sing. Have the Stones officially jumped the shark?
