Well, I guess for people who like that sort of thing... Actually, they may be releasing that show, too, thereby making Dub Room virtually obsolete. That's not definite, though. I guess it's worth getting either way. Would Netflix actually even stock something like this?!

I would almost always agree with this statement, but right now, I'd advise people to hold out for a little while: the Zappa Family Trust is supposedly going to release the whole 1974 KCET studio set featured on that DVD. Kind of annoying to pay for some of these things twice, but it would be nice to see those performances without all the (admittedly cool) Bruce Bickford claymation and weird engine-revving noises dubbed over it. Of course, if the ZFT doesn't release the KCET show anytime soon, I'd certainly recommend going ahead and getting the Dub Room Special if you have some extra $.

That would be a blast. Start out with stuff like, "During what show did the Dead play the longest-ever version of Dark Star?" and then throw in stuff like "Coventry City last won the English football cup in what year?" just to fuck with people.

How Is Kicking Television holding up?
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Livin' in New Orleans's topic in Just A Fan
Speed Racer, I agree with absolutely everything in your post, and it sums up my feelings nicely about KT. I'm glad other people liked it, but it didn't work for me at all. In fact, I can't think of anything to add to your observations. -

I would put this one at the top: Frank Zappa, Inca Roads. If you don't care to hear the whole thing in context, it runs from 2:00 - 5:08 or so. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg6X2hsl52E There's a longer, unedited version on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. II.

I missed this, but I played some FZ over the weekend anyway, just out of habit. Hard to believe he has been gone that long.

Band Names That Make You Uncomfortable

I just picked up a copy of the Pure Jerry set with Keith & Donna from July 29 & 30, 1977. Most all of it sounds pretty sweet! Donna's monitors must have worked better than they did with the big speaker system the Dead had in the years before that.

I buy a pretty fair amount of music, and although most of it is on CD, I'll settle for the mp3s from Amazon if the price is right. For example, I'm interested in getting an obscure import by a band called Arzachel, featuring early work from guitarist Steve Hillage. Total cost of a used copy of the CD (with shipping): $25.97. Total for the mp3 version: $5.99. With over 16,000 tracks on my iTunes, how often am I really going to listen to the actual CD if I buy it? It's an easy decision. I've done this with several pricey out-of-print Blue Note titles as well, and have absolutely zero regrets.

Electronic Adapters/Transformers in Europe
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Mr. Heartbreak's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Thanks a lot! -
My wife and I are planning to fly from the U.S. to Italy and France next year, and of course will be bringing all manner of electronic gadgets with us: cell phone & charger, digital camera & charger, hair dryer, hair straightening iron, camcorder, etc., etc. Does anyone have experience they can share about what sort of adapters or transformers are needed to plug in all these things without frying them? Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I find her voice utterly compelling, and that includes the VU songs. I know some people like Lou's versions better, but I think there's a reason she sang those songs originally. All Tomorrow's Parties is one of the great tracks of the 60s, IMHO. People tend to forget, when someone who doesn't speak English well learns to sing in English, they will still have a pretty heavy accent. Only in America do people get up in arms about it.

Wah! Jay Farrar on Uncle Tupelo last week......
Mr. Heartbreak replied to IRememberDBoon's topic in Just A Fan
Exactly. Why would Jeff, at this point in his career, want to relearn bass parts and backup vocals on a bunch of songs Jay Farrar wrote? He's been a front man for fifteen years and counting. It's a harmless fantasy, but not a realistic prospect at all ... hell, I wish Adriana Lima would have chosen me over that ugly spud she married, but that didn't happen either. -
1) Joni Mitchell 2) Billie Holiday 3) Emmylou Harris 4) Aretha Franklin 5) Nina Simone 6) Grace Slick 7) Sinead O'Connor 8) Janis Joplin 9) Nico 10) Debbie Harry

No offense to any bass players, but I highly doubt Jeff would ever want to be relegated back to that position either. He strictly plays guitar. -
Seconded. I also read a lot of news articles on Yahoo, Netscape, etc., but for commentary and political argument, I default to Matthews (and occasionally Keith & Rachel).

Other than the scenes with Dylan, Neil Young, Joni & Muddy Waters, I found The Last Waltz to be almost intolerably boring. -
I'd say split the difference. The vocals on the Beck & Wilco version are better, but the guitar work on Spence's version is better. Is it wrong that I like this better than most of Beck OR Wilco's recent work?
