I'm very pleasantly surprised by how much I like this record based on a couple listens. I have felt disappointed in Wilco's studio releases since the high water mark of YHF, but I really like most of these songs, and am looking forward to getting the disc and cranking it in my car. There are a couple of slightly weak parts, and JT hits a few clams on the vocals, but overall it's much more enjoyable than AGIB and much, much better than SBS, for my taste anyway. I'm psyched about Wilco again for the first time in a good five years!

In real life, I'm better looking than Frank Zappa ... but then, that ain't sayin' much, is it?
-
Damn, that's the first time I've ever seen a best-of list that I didn't write that has Bruce Cockburn and Frank Zappa on it!
-
Damn, you guys are like family here! My brother was at the 10/15/83 show too, I believe. I was in VA at the time, so I caught the boys about a week earlier in Richmond. Ya'll got a St. Stephen, but we got a great Crazy Fingers.

Nah, they're just a lame-ass jug band.

I've seen them 2X in the past 2 years, and both were great. I'd say definitely go.

Ha! Suck on it, Ann Coulter!

I don't know, I just saw Ratdog a couple months back, and Bobby was in very good form. I suspect Help>Slip>Franklin's may have sounded mighty fine indeed. Care to give us a little review, HungryHippo?

Bruce Cockburn! He's an incredible guitar player, singer and songwriter. One of the best performers I have ever seen. He's won several Juno awards (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, I'm told), and is a national treasure there. In his 60s now, but still performing. I especially recommend Humans, Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws, In the Falling Dark and Stealing Fire. -
In the mid-80s, I let my then-girlfriend drag me and her little niece and nephew to see Cyndi Lauper. It was much better than expected, and she really played well to the kiddies in the audience, of which there were many. Not sure I'd want to see her now, but ...

Which Bands have you seen the most live?
Mr. Heartbreak replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
Wilco (7) Dead (5) Zevon (4) Steely Dan (3) Everybody else, it's just once or twice. -
Wow, you guys have some upbeat chill out music! Try Thursday Afternoon or Music for Airports by Brian Eno. THAT is some really, really mellow music in the "ambient" genre.

The fact that he played the song "Barack The Magic Negro" on his show demonstrates, to me, just how far he is willing to stoop.

Who are the 5 best live bands you've ever seen?

Wow, I missed all these comments. Well, I caught Steely Dan for the first time around 1993 too. It was in Providence, RI. Fantastic show. In more recent incarnations, I have seen them 2 times, both at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, where the sound is absolutely incredible. Saw them in May 2007 and June 2008. Here's a review for the June 2008 show: http://blogcritics.org/archives/2008/06/10/205532.php Oh, man, Warren Zevon was great. The first time I saw him was in 1987. It was a show that Binghamton University won from MTV (?), and featured a whole bunch of weird bands. Warren was the -

# 1 on my list would be Bon Iver opening for Wilco last year. That was like getting ice picks in the forehead for an hour. -
That was the best thing about it: Elton's set was almost entirely classic 70s. I would have been even happier if he had picked another 70s hit instead of I'm Still Standing, but no complaints here.

Okay, there's some pretty obscure people reviewed in this forum, so let's put a couple super heavyweights here (no pun intended). Please, if you hate both these guys, or know them mainly from cheesoid 80s hits, don't ruin this thread with rude comments. I have always been a big fan of Elton's classic period ('69-'76), and I like a fair amount of Billy's classic period as well, so I was excited to have the opportunity to see these two legends. I do know how they sound these days, so I was able to manage my expectations going in. For those who have never seen them tour together, here is a spoi

My wife and I finally paid off our credit cards. Now my credit score should be well over 800.

I really don't see much connection between Wilco's career and Tony Bennett's career.
-
I think B.B. just plays whatever he wants to play. That sure seemed to be the case in the concert I saw. The guy is 83, after all.

I really enjoyed the Buddy Guy/B.B. King tribute to Bo Diddley. I just saw them on 2/5, and it was freakin' awesome. That was like a mini-encore for me.
