  1. I saw this over the weekend, and I must recommend it too. It's a serious minded drama with some pulse-pounding scenes, but it also has a hell of a lot of laughs. Clint is great in it, and I love his direction as well. He got A LOT out of the cast of unknowns. Also saw Benjamin Button, which was better than I expected, but I enjoyed Gran Torino much more.
  2. How about this one: Charva, I loved you I loved you through and through I loved you since in grammar school When we were sniffing glue I loved you purty baby doll And I don't know what in the world to do about it Boppa-bah-boppa-choo-wah Charva, my darling The only love I had I hope you will forgive me, dear For punching out your dad I loved you, I loved you And I don't know what in the world I'm gonna do about it Ooohh-oh-oooh Lahm-buh-buhm-buhm I remember, remember the junior prom And I remember the time I broke your father's arm And I remember, remember all the love we shared Every pl
  3. Wow, great responses to this. Amazing story, hardwood. Yeah, it was a really cool little benefit. I wasn't really familiar with the songs he usually does solo, but highlights were Big Fat Mama and Down in Mississippi. Actually, everything he did was enjoyable. I need to get me some of his CDs.
  4. So, okay, this should really go in the After the Show forum, but ultimately, who gives a fuck anyway? The people who will read this thread hang out in here. (You know who you are.) Last night I saw 95-year-old legendary blues boogie woogie piano player Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins perform at Skipper's Smokehouse, a Tampa institution which supports community radio station WMNF ... a.k.a., "the greatest little radio station on planet earth." They are the only station around here where you can hear folk, blues, old R & B, the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa ... all the things that make life wort
  5. I was gonna say A Day In The Life, but then I read this, and ... well, hell, I think you're right.
  6. What a bummer. I only had one opportunity to see Freddie live, and that was in the early 90s. He was so totally hammered, he basically could not perform at all, though the band of young guns he had was smoking. I've always wished I would have another chance to see him (assuming he had sobered up). Now I know for sure I won't. Freddie put out some great records, but the one I keep coming back to again and again is Red Clay. Stone cold classic Blue Note. I sure hope B.B. King and Buddy Guy both survive well past the show I'm going to in February!
  7. That sounds really good, and definitely something I would be interested in. I love that era of jazz. In fact, I was just listening to some Basie earlier this week. It's not on Amazon anywhere, or at least I couldn't find it. Did you get it direct from the label, or somewhere else?
  8. Larry Coryell - The Lion and the Ram Return to Forever - Where Have I Known You Before David Byrne - Music for the Knee Plays Carlos Santana/Mahavishnu John McLaughlin - Love Devotion Surrender Jim Morrison - An American Prayer Eberhard Weber - Yellow Fields
  9. Yeah, mine would be more like this: 1) Bennie & the Jets - Elton John 2) Golden Years - David Bowie 3) Dancin' Fool - Frank Zappa 4) Casey Jones - Grateful Dead 5) Over My Head - Fleetwood Mac 6) Thunder Island - Jay Ferguson 7) Fly Like An Eagle - Steve Miller Band 8) Miss You - Stones 9) Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith 10) Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon ... assuming we're just going with what was on the radio ...
  10. I never did get around to posting this: the setlist from the Ratdog show I saw last week. 11/18/2008 Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, FL I: Shakedown Street > Easy Answers, Queen Jane Approximately, Loser, Salt Lake City > Ramble On Rose, Playin' in the Band > Might as Well II: Blackbird, Artificial Flowers, El Paso, He's Gone > Eyes of the World > Playin' in the Band (reprise), Standing on the Moon, Foolish Heart E: Attics of My Life These guys were on fire; catch 'em if you get a chance!
  11. I saw them in '79, and I would recommend going. As has already been said, it may be your only chance to see them. Heck, I'm going to see B.B. King and Buddy Guy in February, and I know it may be my only chance to see those guys ... Life is very short.
  12. Check this weirdness out: I think I discovered Paul Weller through Via Chicago, but I'm really not sure. All I know is that I had a dream one night with the name Paul Weller in it, and in the dream I knew he was a musician. I thought that was pretty interesting, so then I went on Amazon and looked up the name, and sure enough, he's a real person. My next move was to do a search here on Someone Else's Song, and I found this thread, but didn't recall ever even seeing it before. I know I hadn't read it. Maybe I saw the name of the thread and it got filed away in my subconscious. Anyway, having
  13. I love what I've heard of Eberhard Weber's ECM work. I have Yellow Fields and Silent Feet, and they're both great.
  14. I finally saw the movie 'Round Midnight and was really blown away by Dexter Gordon's performances. I went ahead and got the soundtrack and then also the additional music under Dexter's name. Some good stuff on there. Also listening to a lot of Miles and Coltrane, as usual. Just finished listening to Grachan Moncur III, New Africa/One Morning I Woke Up Very Early.
  15. 1. Dictionary.com 2. I'm not saying that bigotry is okay. I meant I wouldn't blame a black person for voting for Obama based solely on his race. Nor would I blame any non-white person (Asian, Latino, etc.) for voting for a candidate of their own background for that reason. We tend to think people are not racists or bigots, but let's remember that every single president has been a white dude. Would women voting for a woman make them sexist? Come on, people, let's get real. No one is going to cop for voting for someone for one reason only, and the decision is complex, just like many decisions
  16. rac⋅ism   [rey-siz-uhm] n. 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races. big
  17. Sorry, just saw this today. I'd never actually seen Ike before, so I didn't have a frame of reference. I'd say he was having a great time up there, but to be honest, he looks like he should spend a little less time "Cruisin' for Burgers" and a little more time meeting up with some friends in the vegetable kingdom.
  18. What a beautiful, resounding repudiation of the last horrible eight years of the neo-con regime. Today, I'm still proud to be a liberal, but also a little prouder to be American. Some of you guys might think I'm just an old sarcastic bastard, part of the so-called "angry Left," but the reason so many of us on the Left were angry was the Bush-Cheney doctrine of "Fuck everybody else, we'll bomb anyone we want pre-emptively." I shed a few tears last night. Hmm, so now I'm part of the happy Left!
  19. I also early voted on 23-OCT, and I had to wait about an hour. Tampa, FL HUGE interest in this election.
  20. I just found out about JCB on Saturday at the annual Zappaween show by Bogus Pomp, which featured the legendary Ike Willis on lead vocals and guitar. He said Jimmy was like a big brother to him, and they dedicated the second half of the show to him. Fantastic show, by the way: about 3 & 1/2 hours of FZ music.
  21. I voted on Thursday the 23rd, and it took an hour to get through the line. Please, please, vote early, especially if you live in a swing state ... unless of course you're voting for McCain, in which case I'd suggest you go ahead and take your chances on Election Day.
  22. Planet Waves has some great songs on it, but Court & Spark is a stone classic.
  23. There was a very recent Time or Newsweek article, I forgot which, that discussed why Obama will have to govern from the center. In a nutshell, he is a politician, and if he gets elected, he will want to get re-elected. This guy is no starry-eyed liberal. Bush tried to drive an already right-wing party into an extreme right-wing party, and he paid the price he deserved (well, not really ... impeachment would have been the best price, IMHO). He limps out as the lamest of lame ducks, and fuck him. I'm incredibly glad to see him go. If Obama tried to drive the country far left, he'd pay a huge p
