  1. It's not a great song, but it's certainly not the worst rock and roll song of all time.
  2. Welcome to the new age of "dirty tricks." Unbelievable. They had some fun with it on MSNBC tonight, that's for sure.
  3. Looks likelier than Aerosmith or G 'n R at this point.
  4. Saw an abbreviated Warren Zevon solo set at a place called The Rubb in the old Ybor part of Tampa. Very fun show, though too short. Still, it was only about 7 bucks, so I could hardly complain. The place was packed, so it was hardly a depressing turnout, but it was VERY small for a Warren Z show.
  5. I used to hear Kate and Anna McGarrigle on the folk music show on local radio jewel WMNF here in Tampa. Not a huge fan or anything, but I figured this was the appropriate place to post an RIP. I was honestly not aware of the connection to the Wainwright family.
  6. I was rooting for the Saints the whole time, and it was a great pleasure to watch Favre hit the turf so many times. The season-ending interception was icing on the cake. Choke on it, Brett!
  7. I think Ruth Eckerd is pretty serious about no cameras, but if you smuggle it in and never use the flash, you're probably fine. Otherwise, I would expect trouble.
  8. I have always been a huge Beatle fan, but check out this quote from a contemporary rock critic (1960s): Why should the Beatles limit themselves to pop? Why can't they just expand as they want, not thinking about categories? No reason--they're responsible only to themselves, and they can work whichever way they like. The only thing is, without pop, without its image and its flash and its myths, they don't add up to much. They lose their magic boots, and then they're human like anyone else; they become updated Cole Porters, smooth and sophisticated, boring as hell. Admitted, the posh Sundays
  9. I was kind of ambivalent about Uncle Tupelo at first. I found them by way of Wilco in the late 90s, so they were already history by then, and I was only familiar with Jeff's work with Wilco (which is, IMHO, better than most of his UT work). I was truly put off by Jay's voice at first -- and was later stunned to see people posting on the internet that he was their favorite singer! Different strokes, I guess -- but I suffered through it long enough to actually get to appreciate him somewhat ... though the only time I have ever listened to him sing more than five songs in a row was probably the
  10. Looks like I may have been wrong here. Whew! http://www.sphere.com/politics/article/seven-in-10-americans-dont-want-palin-to-run-for-president/19322408 Most Americans Don't Want Sarah Palin to Run (Jan. 19) -- Sarah Palin may be considering a bid for the White House in 2012, but it seems most Americans would rather that she not. According to a CBS poll, 71 percent of Americans don't want the former Republican vice presidential nominee to run for president. Despite widespread speculation that Palin could be on the next GOP ticket, 56 percent of Republicans said they don't want the form

  12. "An unending shitrain of ugliness" indeed. I agree that Nixon was much smarter than Palin ... however, as far as being a mean, vindictive, paranoid right-winger who feels a constant need to settle scores with the liberal media, she is practically Nixon's daughter. While I agree she is a very polarizing figure, I also feel she still has a shot at the nomination in 2012 if she wants it. If she got the Republican vote and a fair amount of Independents, it could be ugly. If she ran as anything other than a Republican, she'd be another Perot, for sure. I hope she just sells lots of books and
  13. I must disagree with this optimistic view. Palin is potentially a huge threat to our country. If the Obama presidency continues to go downhill, and people are angry and fed up enough by 2012, she could ... unbelievably enough ... win a general election. I can still remember clearly, in 2000, thinking, No way are we stupid enough in America to elect George Dipshit Bush ... and I was wrong. And then in 2004, I remember thinking, Well, people can't possibly be stupid enough to reelect this jackass. And I was wrong again. Palin is a female Nixon. And look where he ended up. Remember what H.L
  14. My vote: The Black Eyed Peas. Seriously, if you really could only eliminate ONE musical act or artist, you would keep them and get rid of U2? The Eagles? The Doors? If not The Black Eyed Peas, then how about OutKast? Or Los del Rio, authors of Macarena, one of the most annoying songs of all time? Or The Baha Men, those schmucks who popularized Who Let the Dogs Out? How about Kanye, that arrogant twit? Heck, even the Village People or Kool & the Gang would be a step in the right direction.
  15. 1) Elton John & Billy Joel 2) Buddy Guy & B.B. King 3) Pinetop Perkins ...nothing but old guys
  16. Yeah, Ruth Freakin' Eckerd Hall. Best acoustics around here by a long shot! Wow, seeing a band in a place that was DESIGNED for musical performances...what a concept.
  17. Seconded...er, thirded! I don't actually get enraged by music as a rule, but this really set my teeth on edge. The abominable lyrics are so bad, they're almost funny. Key word there being almost.
  18. I only posted in here because I've got Louie's back on this one. Not here to pick a fight, and hope everybody really, really enjoys the rap they enjoy. Happy New Year. Peace.
  19. Pretty nice list, A-man. You showed more restraint than I did this year! A few more: 12) Frank Zappa - Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar This has some smokin' solos on it. I actually like a lot of FZ's guitar work on other releases better than anything on here, but it's still pretty outrageous. Definitely something no self-respecting Zappahead should live without. 13) Velvet Underground & Nico (remaster) I already had the original release, so it took me a while to get around to buying this (and reselling my old single disc). The mono mix is the real reason to get it. It's a revelation, much
  20. I had a similar experience with BT, having backtracked to it from ST & YHF. By then, I had already heard great live versions of almost all the songs, and they were much better than what was on the discs. In a way, ST was a giant leap forward from BT, and YHF was a giant leap forward from ST, though I still like ST sonically better than any of their other albums. (Not a big fan of O'Rourke's influence.) I could probably make a disc of my favorites off ST and YHF and call it the perfect Wilco album.
  21. Seconded. Although I'm "only" 45, I've never found the genre inspiring. In fact, I wasn't going to post anything in this thread, for that reason. But it should be acknowledged that it's not just us older dudes like Louie & me who don't have much use for the genre. I disliked it from the beginning, and I might add that the same goes for my wife (who is, incidentally, much younger than Louie or me). It's really not an age thing, it's a musical preference thing.
  22. If I didn't already own it, I would totally rent 200 Motels. Centerville...A real nice place to raise your kids up!
  23. Thanks for turning me on to that, BTW. I picked it up from Amazon for a penny, per your suggestion. (It's still available for a penny, too!)
  24. As usual, I didn't buy anywhere near the 10 new 2009 releases I would need to participate in one of those threads. But I bought a TON of stuff this year from all sorts of other eras, including some great box sets. Here be the cream of the crop. 1) Miles Davis - The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions Cover the kiddies' eyes, because I have to say upfront, this set is a total mindfuck. I loved the original Jack Johnson disc, and decided to splurge when the price on the box came down. The many takes of Willie Nelson and Go Ahead John get a little tedious after a while, but that's why God invented t
