  1. I got a book from my daughter for Christmas which was so fascinating that it made me abandon the Vonnegut I was in the middle of. I blasted through my new book and finished it as my first book of the new year, yesterday. A great read! The book is called "Machine of Death". Yes, sounds grim but it isn't actually. It's a collection of stories by various authors, all based on the premise that a machine has been invented that, with a single drop of one's blood, can tell a person what their cause of death will be. Not when, only the cause. The stories spin out in all directions and detail the socie
  2. Boss_Tweedy, I'm so glad 2016 brought some genuine joy to your family! I wish your dad continued health! Shug, you described my very-mixed New Years Eve feelings perfectly. I'm right there with you but we simply have to put things back to order in the world. There's no other option so we'll do whatever needs to be done. We'll help each other stay strong. And yes, we do that by choosing optimism and courage, by being decent to each other, even by snapping up some Wilco tickets to feed our souls for the fight. Go us!!!
  3. As we enter a new year, heading into what seems to be a whole new world order, I am wondering how you are all holding up. These are the strangest of times! What are you planning to do differently in 2017? For myself, I will be having a very close look at what news sources I believe. How are you facing/bracing for what's ahead?
  4. I know, I know! I too have never felt such trepidation going into a fresh new year. It should be bright and brilliant and full of hope, but this year those feelings are hard to come by. I urge you all to remember who you are and what you stand for. I hope you all will find the strength to surround those you love and those you meet in everyday life with compassion and support. I hope you will be brave enough to rise to the challenges this "new world order" presents. It is not "their" world...it is ours as well, and we have the right and absolutely the obligation to help steer this big inclusi
  5. To those of you of the Christmas persuasion, I wish you a beautiful, calm day (but not too calm) centered on the love of your friends and family. I hope there will be shrieks of laughter, loving glances, gasps of happiness, delicious food, terrific surprises and sweet moments that are completely spontaneous and unpredictable. In short, I wish you Christmas in all its warmth! Also a big Hanukkah shout-out here. May blessings unfold for us all as the new year arrives! Make some good memories, everybody! Love your loved ones.
  6. Yes! Perfectly fine to put either the Wilco part or the holiday part first. These are great! I knew that Grandma one was coming! Keep them coming! I love all of these so far, and I will probably be singing along incorrectly to carols when I run errands in a little bit. The tunes get a bit confused in the blending...
  7. Ok, folks, you seemed to have much fun mangling Jeff's song titles in "Splice", and you made me giggle, laugh out loud and even struck me with profound thought with a few of your entries! But the whole time, I was keeping a secret, which only now can be revealed: I was just warming you guys up to play Christmas Splice! Let me warn you in advance, you are going to crack yourselves up doing this one! Same basic rules. Use two songs. In this case, one well-known Christmas or Holiday song and one Wilco song, spliced together into something new and magical! No changing any words to other ten
  8. Keep up the very amusing good work! These are wonderful and maybe Jeff already has one of these new titles stuck in his head!
  9. You guys are cracking me up! Heavy Metal Hummingbird
  10. Ok all, between political lunacy and the Christmas crunch and general wintertime blues, I think we are all in need of a little playful diversion. I hope you'll join me in playing and help create some ridiculousness for all of us to enjoy. I call the game "Splice". To play, follow these simple rules: 1.) You play using only the words used in Wilco song titles. You may not use any entire title, with the exception of song titles that are only one word long, such as "Nope" or "Reservations". 2.) For now at least let's stick to using just two song titles. I might open it up more later, but for
  11. First off, HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY, SPENCER TWEEDY!!! And in perfect celebratory style, Spencer has chosen today to debut his own first solo effort, a 4-song EP. Have a listen to "Geezer Love": http://consequenceofsound.net/2016/12/spencer-tweedy-drops-debut-ep-geezer-love-stream-download/ Congratulations, Spencer!
  12. Those are great questions. Too bad that we'll never get them answered.
  13. I love being introduced to cool new bands by Wilco!
  14. You're gonna have to tell us more than that.
  15. I've just finished reading my husband's treasured "For What It's Worth"...treasured because Richie Furay was nice enough to personalize a copy to him! The Buffalo Springfield's story is such a complicated and convoluted one, and in many ways it is a sad story of a band that got more than its share of bad breaks, despite the enormous talent within the group. Fascinating. I grew up in southern CA until I was 10, and then was in northern CA. These guys made the soundtrack to my childhood! I never knew that they weren't huge everywhere, but they sure were in my CA world. And deserved to be!
  16. A couple of favorites...Bruce Springsteen in 1975, at UC Santa Barbara, and Elvis Costello at the Whiskey on the Sunset Strip....'77 or '78. There was an obnoxious drunk, a big guy, throwing himself all over, bashing into people in his snockered state. He was directly below Elvis, front and center at the stage edge. Midway through the show, tiny angry Elvis had had enough of him. Elvis bent and picked up the guy's tall drink glass which he'd set on the stage, and then Costello, all unruffled coolness, poured the whole drink over the drunk's head. The guy was so soused he just stood and took it
  17. While I'm looking forward to this as much as anyone, I have always wished it didn't come at Christmas time! Who has a spare dime at this time of year?!
  18. Happy turkey day to all of our American members! In these craziest of times it might seem almost trivial to pause to make a big, memorable meal that we share with the family that birth gave us along with the family we've been lucky enough to gain as we weave our way through life. But the truth of the matter is that pausing to enjoy each other and the incredible gift we all have of sharing this planet and its bounty...why, that's no small or trivial thing at all. It might just be the most important part of life. Pause today to take each other in, along with all that amazing food. Stop long
  19. Everybody go see some live music. It will help. I saw Mavis (and the wonderful movie of her life, "Mavis!") tonight, and I feel human again.
  20. It doesn't look a bit different from here. I don't recognize my own country. I'm getting vertigo at the idea of going from Obama to.....this. Keep an eye out for those 4 horsemen. It's the only explanation I have.
  21. Omigawd you drove overseas! Brave. We did that in England...alternately fun and utterly terrifying!
