Wow, someone is really bitter about these election results...

But the program that the University of Michigan uses (which is really what Prop 2 was going after) doesn't work like that. It doesn't turn down people in favor of unqualified minorities. It just gives favor to minorities when choosing between candidates who are all qualified. ________________________________________ As far as I'm concerned, if someone is anti-abortion, but liberal on anything else, then they may as well just be a liberal at this point. Congress no longer has a say on that issue.

I'm bummed that prop 2 passed in Michigan. That's a kick in the balls.

i was follwoing the returns with a friend who grew up in maryland and went to college in michigan. so we were following michigan, maryland and illinois (along with everything else of course) almost evertything went the way we wanted. i feel pretty good abotu tonight right now. now the dems just need to not fuck up too badly in the next two years. i have very little faith in them to do this. anyway, jager+beer+america not fucking it up again resulted in a good night. I'll be hurting at work tomorrow, but it's worth it. Congratulations, America!

I was surprised to not wait in line at all this morning. It was about 9:00, so after most people were at work already, but that place was quiet as could be. A little disconcerting, but I live in a safe Democratic district, so it won't make much of a difference in the House at least, I guess. -

Today is the day! Good luck, America. -
But don't you find yourself having to change the music on that thing constantly? No less than 40gb will do.

Depends on what brand of corruption. -
Well, the big issue in the Foley scandal, IMO, wasn't the screw up of one guy, it was the failure to act by the many others who knew what he was up to. Including party leadership.
-
No, but I also don't remember the Democratic Party basing their campaigns on moral values and claiming that the Republicans were destroying American families. Certainly the actions of individuals are the responsibilities of those individuals. But if the Republicans are going to insist that they have a higher moral standing than Democrats, then I think it's reasonable to expect them to do a better job of cleaning out their ranks and being careful of who they associate with.

Haggard is more than just a backer though. At least according to his claims, he talked to the President every Monday. If he is to be believed about that (and I haven't heard the White House deny it, which I would think they'd do immediately if they could), then it shows that he has access to the most powerful people in the party. That's real influence, far beyond just being a regular constituent.
-
Fair enough. I don't mean to paint the entire Republican party with the molester/hypocrite/drugged-out-gay-dude brush. But I still think it's disingenous for the party to try to claim a moral high ground when there are so many scandals within their ranks recently. I guess I'm treading in some murky area by trying to make a distinction, and I'm entirely open to the possibility that the distinction I'm trying to make doesn't really exist in the same way that I'm seeing it.

Ron Washington hired as Texas manager. He deserves it.

Oh, I know that the war and Katrina aren't traditionally seen as moral issues. But that's because the definition of what is and is not a moral issue is completely backwards in this country right now, IMO. I think that sending thousands of soldiers to their death for no real purpose is immoral (to speak nothing of the innocent Iraqis who have died). Letting the people of New Orleans suffer for days before doing anything to help them was immoral. Two boys kissing is not. That's just me though. Plus, well, there's nothing about the Democratic platform that is particularly immoral either, s

I think that U of M has about 40,000 total students, plus the rest of the city, which is notable but not huge. But it's also only 40 miles from Detroit, and the Metro Detroit area has about 4.5 million people, and Ann Arbor seems to be as close as Wilco comes to Detroit nowadays, so I think there'd probably be a good amount of people travelling who make the drive in.

Yeah, the smearing of Tammy Duckworth falls just short of being Max Cleland all over again. Disgusting. -
Wow, talk about completely mis-reading my point. I know that Haggard and Foley are not representative of the whole party. But don't you think that those two scandals (also, the Foley cover up more than anything else) strip the Republican party of the moral high ground that they continue to claim? Also, you know, that whole debacle of an illegal war, plus Katrina, etc. What basis does the Republican party have to claim that they are the party of moral values while the Democrats are not? Policy and actions mean a whole lot more to me than their platform, which is essentially meaningless rhe

I like those jean jackets.
-
I may go to this.
-
It blows my mind that, amidst the Foley and Haggard scandals, a state Republican party can still think they can get away with claiming to be the party of family values.

Well, I've seen Wilco play in Ann Arbor twice, and Tweedy solo once. The first Wilco show and the Tweedy show were at the Michigan Theater. The other Wilco show was at Hill Auditorium. Michigan Theater: 1,700 capacity Hill Auditorium: 3,538 capacity Michigan Union Ballroom: 600 If Wilco played there, there would be riots.
-
There is a ballroom in the Michigan Union that does sometimes host concerts. Way too small for Wilco though.

You're talking about the Lions leading the Falcons, right?

Don't you have to at least win one pennant before you're a dynasty?

Are you ready for some football?

It got really scary late in the game. In fairness to the defense, 9 of Ball State's points were given up by the offense, and the second string was responsible for a lot of the problems. But still, way closer than it should have been. That was close to being the worst sporting event I've ever attended. As it is, I feel pretty good about making the trip. I know I'm going to get shit at work on Monday though.
