  1. it just comes across as utterly self-important naive song writing and performing. nothing worse than a shit load of instruments that hardly get used. kudos to these guys for pulling this big of a group together, however, my hunch is that they have a director and benefactor that required auditions etc.
  2. some interesting stuff form the new book. the song 'changing highways' that ended up on broken arrow, was recorded for Zuma. the zuma sessions also included powder finger, ride my llama, seven delivery. lots of stuff. kind of interesting. neil mentions that all this stuff will be on archives 2 called the Dume Tapes. one interesting thing about neil is that every god damn thing the guy does has to be curated with some uber hippy style. interesting and exhausting.
  3. yeah, i think i'm on neil overload. he was on Fresh Air yesterday too. he was a difficult interview. nothing really revealed. to tell you the truth, the dude puts out so much stuff. it's a bit overwhelming. went to listen to Comes A Time today it was a breeze. think i'll stick with the old stuff. i am curious about archives 2 and related releases, but that's about it at this point.
  4. slower the better as far as i'm concerned. i do not like fast versions of eyes in particular. btw, are mountain bed and lammycat the same person?
  5. i agree. to add insult to injury, the new memoir is really not that great. it really doesn't hang together and reveals absolutely nothing. main themes of the book include: i miss my friends, i like hawaii, mp3 sucks, i like trains, buy pono, mp3 suck, buy pono, i have lots of cars, mp3 suck....and on and on. shakey is a million times better.
  6. Pono looks very interesting. i'm curious if the music will be mastered. if it's still mastered to brick wall hell, then what's the point? i would still miss artwork. i do like the idea of just a music player and not a bunch of other stuff. this might bring music back into stores if they sold the giant files in flash drives that came with gatefold sleeves. now that would be amazing!
  7. i mentioned reckoning above. i remember i wasn't aware of it and came across a copy in a store in the lat 80s. i was blown away. i still jam out to that birdsong on my acoustic every once in a while. what a great setlist too....china doll!
  8. almost half way done with the book. it's interesting, but lots of the stories are about neil wanting to play with Crazy Horse again and....Pono. this does sound interesting, but it really isn't sound, it's shitty mastering. my hunch is that pono will go the way of DVD-A etc.
  9. yeah, giant def has that fatter low end reverb sound rather than the straight guitar sound of americana.
  10. good call on boxer. the annoying part with Flatlanders is not the saw, it's jimmy dale gilmore:) i will say that i am way tired of that audacious avant break down in the live versions of via chicago. come on guys!
  11. The new memoir is really good. lots of vignettes like dylan's.
  12. good ones mentioned so far... Grateful Dead-Dead Set, Reckoning, Without A Net Neil Young-Live Rust Frampton Comes Alive (i know, but it's so great!) Phish-Slip Stitch Pass Genesis-Seconds Out Yes-Keys To Ascension
  13. i'm attempting to restore some dynamic range with some brick walled CDs. i know you can't restore what's already gone. i'm just curious about audacity effects and if others have done this. clip fix has been helpful. i'm interested in what filters might help.
  14. Yep, Yes was a band i hated and then liked. recently, i decided i don't like them. i can see how and why punk was necessary. it's exhausting listening to those 20 min. tunes. the production does not hold up either, especially now when producers have figured out that drums don't have to be reverbed to hell....see Glenn Kotche:)
  15. yeah, what were those...Toast, Chrome Dreams, Homegrown, Oceanside/Countryside...? i forgot about those. Neil mentions in the new book that he is working on a Crazy Horse comp with some Danny Witten stuff. he's got lots of projects.
  16. i loved pearl jam's first two albums. after that i could not stand them. stuck in their time indeed.
  17. walk like a giant sounds excellent. i prefer the more spacey crazy horse jams. going to pick up the memoir today. i'm sure i'll have read twice by the weekend :-)
  18. great idea for a thread. indigo girls-i loved them because it was acoustic music and i've always been into playing acoustic guitar. now i cannot stomach them at all. led zep- a few tunes, but that's enough the who-LOVED them in high school, now i could care less. Phish-i just think they are so goofy now. Jayhawks Jay Farrar solo stuff Drive By Truckers MMJ I'm also totally sick of classic rock radio. enough already!! Bands that still do it for me and have always... Neil Young Grateful Dead Wilco Yes (classic) Rush Pink Floyd Pat Metheny
  19. neil did do some interviews, but there are pretty big sections where jimmy discusses how difficult it was to get these interviews. neil blowing him off at the last minute. neil also almost pulled the plug on the entire thing. i am looking forward to this memoir but would also like to get an update on shakey. i'm especially interested in projects, studio sessions, archives etc. i could give a shit about neil's drug use, sobriety and how he's an asshole. but, i guess that's the stuff that sells books.
  20. Just play straight into an amp man! Jeez, it wouldn't sound any different...maybe even better.
