A Thread for Musical Blasphemy you Truly Believe
jff replied to hardwood floor's topic in Someone Else's Song
I guess I just think this: Is more punk than this: The Clash appear to be wearing a goofy uniform because it's what they think they're supposed to do, while ZZ Top looks like they're wearing a goofy uniform because that's who they are. -

First, we'd have to settle on a definition of "punk". Too tedious. Same deal if I had said they were "cooler". Let's let it go. -

Maybe I should have said Jethro Tull. Whatever, the Clash sucks. -

Nirvana spent more time fussing with their image than anyone who has ever been on American Idol. -

REM's continued existence is killing their legacy, which was flimsy to begin with. ZZ Top are a better band and are way more punk than the Clash. -
That's true. It was pretty amazing to hear Roger Waters play "Money" on acoustic guitar (as a pretty straightforward blues tune) and hear some of his demos. Those songs really went through an incredible transformation. I don't want to give everything away, or spoil the fun for anyone who hasn't seen this. I'll just say that some of their memories of recording that album, particularly in regard to the fermale vocal overdubs, reminded me of how magical music making can be. That was something I really needed to remember since I was sort of in an ambivalent phase with my (now) ex-band un

I watched the DSOTM Classic Albums dvd last weekend, which has renewed my appreciation for this album. That's a fantastic dvd. Definitely one of the best in the Classic Albums series. Full of fascinating insight into the making of the record. I probably never would have thought of trying to play any of those songs, but I've been fiddling around with "Breathe" every time I've grabbed a guitar over the last week.

No, I'm not Judd, but I know who you're talking about. He's a nice guy. If you're going to Criminal make sure to see Anna Kramer's set. Awesome band. I'll be there for that unless a previous engagement runs late.

Criminal Records is having live music all day on two stages: OUTDOOR STAGE 1 p.m.

Was that band the Amps, or did Kim have a band called The Pacers? Same band, maybe? The Amps' album was called "Pacer". Just curious.

Sounds like a dcumentary I'd really enjoy. Saturday, April 19th is "Record Store Day". I know of at least three stores here in Atlanta that are having live music, free beer, discounts, etc. http://www.recordstoreday.com/

I was thinking of this (recorded at the Ark...in Boston):

Oh, that's easy. Oliver Stone.

Me too. Nels played with Watt on a few tours, but I saw him with Watt's band "The Crew of the Flying Saucer" (I think that's what they were called). That lineup had two drummers, one of them was Michael Pruessner from the Nels Cline Trio. I think that was Nels' first Watt tour, and they played mostly the material from Watt's "Ballhog or Tugboat" album (aka, his "wrestling album"). The Geraldine Fibbers were the opening act. Nels joined the Fibbers not long after that tour. The diary for that tour is epic. Unfortunately, I missed all the other Watt tours that Nels was on.

Isn't there a Zappa live album from The Ark?
-
They did after the first album. I saw them in Atlanta. They had a pretty decent sized crowd. Maybe they'll come back again now that Nels has more name recognition.

That's going to be awesome. I wish he'd come back to the south. I've seen him in a number of non Wilco settings and it's always amazing. Hopefully Watt can get him to sign on for a Black Gang tour. I'll bet it's been a while since Nels or Watt have done a 50 shows in 51 days type of tour.
-
I think John Densmore and Robby Krieger are amazing and creative players, but I'm going with the Byrds on this one.
-
Awesome news! By "solo album" do you mean just Nels, or is it him with a group?
-
Oliver Wood plays at a pizza place near my house every month or so. He's an excellent guitarist. I haven't listened to the Wood bros. yet. I'll make a point to do so.

Over in the "Just a Fan" section of this forum, there are two videos of Nels recording with Mike Watt and Bob Lee (aka: Tha Black Gang). Nels is playing his old Jazzmaster and it definitely has not been refinished. The sessions were on April 5, 2008.

favourite Bee Gees/Beach Boys/The Kinks Song
jff replied to Synthesizer Patel's topic in Someone Else's Song
I have tried to get into the early Bee Gees stuff, but so far it hasn't happened. I think I have most of their early material in my collection, but most of it is on bad or worn out pressings. The poor sound quality could be a hindrance. I bought this for $1 this weekend: Bee Gees: "Two Years On" from 1970 (Sorry I couldn't find a better image) I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but I'm hoping to like it. -
Last time I got in a car crash the insurance adjuster looked exactly like Nels' twin brother Alex: Alex Cline I could picture John giving me an estimate on some driveway repairs. Glenn looks like a bus boy at an all-you-can-eat restaurant. Especially when he's sweaty. Michael looks like the guy who comes to your school to promote space camp.

This is going to be so wicked. Watt is overdue for some great new material. I didn't like his last one all that much (the organ trio one), as much as I hate to say it. Watt and Nels are sort of in the same boat, having a lot of their time devoted by their roles in bigger name groups. I'm glad Watt was finally able to find time to do the Black Gang album he's been promising for almost a decade. Thanks for the videos. I'll watch them later.
