That'd be Strauss. Or do they both have a Blue Danube? I've been enjoying a record of Bartok string quartets.

Grizzly Man --> Wilco connection: Jim O'Rourke plays piano & guitar and wrote some of the material on the Grizzly Man soundtrack. The Grizzly Man dvd has a great bonus featurette of Thompson, O'Rourke and the guys recording the soundtrack.

Lots of great ones so far. I've never heard anything but great tone from Derek Trucks. Even when he was 14. John McLaughlin on "A Tribute to Jack Johnson". Marc Ribot on "Rain Dogs" Richard Thompson's solo on "Shoot Out the Lights" slays me every time.

I don't have that one, but I have looked at a few of the Miles box-sets, and I own the Jack Johnson box. From what I've seen, I think you will want the hard copy. The books and packaging are excellent.

Life on Earth: Look!! There is Life on Earth! This is the bassist from Dungen's band. It has a similar sound to Dungen in some ways (all the member of Dungen appear on the album), but is generally quieter than most of Dungen's material, and unlike Dungen, this group sings in English. This is probably my favorite album at the moment.

Did these guys ever have a hit? Old Skull

I saw them at CMJ in '97. I thought they were fantastic. Then I saw them a year or two later in Atlanta and thought they sounded kind of generic/average. Maybe they were having a bad show (I suspect that happens a lot when bands come to Atlanta), or maybe they're a band I have to be in the right mood for. Either way, they can definitely deliver the goods.

Remember when the gregorian chant was a hit? How dumb are we?

For some strange reason, I had that song stuck in head yesterday afternoon. Awesome video.

They wrote the Waffle House songs, too. DO they have Waffle Houses in IL?

I liked it the first tiime I listened to it, and since then I haven't gotten anything out of it. It's not in the trade-in pile yet. I'm still hoping to be won over. I'd probably like it more if I saw them play live.

I got it a few months ago. So far, I don't feel like I was missing out on anything by not having heard it. Maybe it'll win me over. I feel exactly the same about this band as I do about Don Caballero.

Bill Frisell has been putting out records on Nonesuch for approx. 20 years. I liked the Laura Viers record I heard. I think she's on Nonesuch.

I was on a high school marching band trip to Florida in 1987 or '88 and I remember the girls in the drill team singing some of the tunes from that first Violent Femmes album on the bus. I'm not sure how I got to be on the bus with the drill team rather than the woodwind section, but...

I like it, maybe because I think that's the best movie I've ever seen. I don't listen to it very often, but I'd probably listen to it all the time if it they had left off Johnny Depp's poetry readings. It'd also be better if it included the fantastic opening theme that Neil plays on acoustic guitar. People who like the Dead Man soundtrack would probably enjoy Richard Thompson's soundtrack to Grizzly Man.

Very nice. I've had some decent guitars, but probably not anything on that level. I guess the nicest guitars I've ever owned are my old Les Paul Standard or the Taylor acoustic I currently own.
-
Uh, I guess it'd be more accurate to say the Violent Femmes song was more of a band practice than a singalong, so maybe it doesn't count.
-
I have nothing against Arc. It's definitely not a good Neil album for a beginner, though.

That's what me and my friends used to sing/play. Usually it was a lot more playing than singing (hardly anyone wanted to sing), but the tunes were things like House of the Rising Sun, some Zeppelin tunes, Grateful Dead, etc. Probably the most current songs we played were Violent Femmes, or something, which even then was over 10 years old.
