It'd be way too tedious to give everyone a specific ranking. No list maker would be able to answer why so-and-so is # 23 and not #17. The same is true for any list of this kind. You could argue that they have a top 3 or top 5 which are in order and the rest are just a bunch of really good drummers in no particular order (or in an order that prevents too many guys from a specific subgenre or time period being back to back). Joey Waronker should be on the list. And Earl Palmer is missing. Come on!

Pretty sure it's not "50 Greatest in THIS Order".

Very often, guitarists emply a person to switch their effects on and off for them from offstage. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these effects are rack mountable versions of the effects that are available in some of these multi-effect units. I also wouldn't be surprised if these guitarists are folks who are considered to have amazing "tone". Believe it or not, rockstars that can afford (or be given free of charge) any piece of gear on the market occaisionally use cheap gear (Alex Lifeson uses some Behringer equipment, for instance). I'm sure the multi-effects have a lot of good sounds

That's bad news. I hope WilcoCorp has a health plan.

I hate to quote myself, but earlier I said this: "You can see their Isle of Wight performance on "Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue". I'm not sure if this is their entire performance, supposedly it is. It's only 20 something minutes" The bold part is wrong. Their set was 38 minutes.

All this talk about MMW... I enjoy them, but I've only listened to the Dropper and Combustication. Of those, I think I prefer Combustication. I'd like to hear their Tonic album (the all acoustic one), or all of their earlier stuff, really. I first saw/heard them as an opening act for Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. I remember they played a Monk tune and a Bob Marley tune. That was back when Billy Martin was using that three colored tub as a bass drum. They went over quite well even though they seemed to be unknown to most of the audi

I'd love to read that. Shall I PM you my email address?

You can see their Isle of Wight performance on "Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue". I'm not sure if this is their entire performance, supposedly it is. It's only 20 something minutes, but there were zillions of bands playing that festival so they probably did short sets. The sax player is Gary Bartz.

Cool to see this mentioned. I was listening to it today. Actually, it's still in my player. Maybe I'll hit play again. Jim Keltner gets into some really unorthodox drumming on this one.

Monk w/ Coltrane will forever be one of my top 5 albums no matter what comes out between now and the end of my life.

Eugene Chadbourne can be pretty out there. One of his guitars has a toaster for a body. I've seen him make toast while playing, then play guitar with the toast and then hand the remnants of the toast to an audience member seated next to me...someone I knew, who later told me the toast was delicious. When he leaves behind the schtick and plays the guitar in a more conventional manner it becomes obvious that he is a very talented guitarist. You could almost say Eugene is a comedy version of Nels. If you're a big Zappa fan I think this would be worth going to see.

In my experience, religion does not claim to be able to do those things, so why should we expect that from a rock?

The Wurlitzers I've seen have typically been in the $500 to $700 range. They're still somewhat easy to find. The problem with them is that the reeds break if you are heavy handed and can be difficult to replace. Once you find replacements you have to tune them, which involves working with solder.

I was in a band with some guys who had these things. They never managed to find the good sounds that may or may not have been available. I think it takes a lot of tedious knob twiddling and button pushing to find the best sounds (even if all you're trying to do is pull up a satisfying distortion sound). I can't blame anyone for not going through that lengthy process. Unfortunately, the result is usually digital pedal board = goofy sounds.

You can see a few Zappa plays Zappa performances and several bits of Dweezil playing Frank's parts on the "Classic Albums: Apostrophe & Overnight Sensation" dvd that came out recently.

They have a lot of good albums. I've always held "Sister" in high regard.

Aside from the first album, which I don't care for, I think the Coral have produced some fine albums. I hope I'll get a chance to see them in concert not as an opening act.

Several of the most beautiful songs I've heard in the last few years have been Fairport songs. Teriffic band. Thanks for the story. I had never read a detailed account of their crash.

There's a small possibility I have two copies. I had two at one time but I think I gave one away. If I still have an extra I'll give one of them up. However, It'll probably be a week or so before I have a chance to dig through my old magazines and find out if I have it or not.

Here's a copy. $8. http://www.jklutherie.com/index.asp?PageAc...mp;ProdID=69104

PBS has been kicking ass with the documentaries lately. Even the ones on subjects I have no interest in at all (hair shows, synchronized swimming) have been well done and entertaining. The Les Paul doc they aired a couple weeks ago was outstanding. The ferret one was kind of dull, but I only saw the last 30 minutes which focused more on the owners & ferret competition award ceremonies (where everyone seems to win) than the ferrets themselves.

You can find it on ebay fairly often.

Not yet. Their website content is not up to date with the magazine content.

Pretty cool interview. His new Singers album is reviewed in the same issue. At the end of the interview it says you can read (ar watch?) more of the interview at guitarplayer.com (or guitarplayertv.com) but I could not find it on either of those sites. However, I did find a 2 minute clip on guitarplayertv.com of Nels and Glenn from one of thier shows.
