Strangers Almanac was my introduction to RA, though it would be some time before I knew who he was as opposed to the band collectively. I remember a guy at a party in 1997 telling me about Whiskeytown. Shortly thereafter, the band played live on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight radio show (http://www.engineerpaul.com/bands/pages/whiskeytown.html), and I was hooked. I caught the band at the Theater of the Living Arts in Philly in April 1998, and it remains one of the dozen or so shows in my top five. The cover of Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi is as Lite FM as it can possibly get. I've wondered whether the band refused to play on it and it's just Duritz, a drum machine, and computer.

I heard a Pavement song from Crooked Rain in Bloomingdales yesterday (drawing a blank on the song). That was suprising, to say the least, considering I'd find it impressive to hear any Pavement played over the PA at before just about any concert.

Louie - Great comments about McCoy, my all-time favorite on the keys. I mentioned him more as an "elder statesman," not as a similar stylist as OP, and I guess you and others are correct than he is not of OP's generation. Is Hank Jones still around? I know he recorded an album with Joe Lovano this year. And nice job keeping jazz alive on this site. Fans of Wilco and any other kind of even relatively improvisational music just need a little exposure to jazz to make the leap.

Try "Nighthawks at the Diner." If that doesn't do it for you, then, well, there are plenty of other bands to try.

I've downloaded numerous shows over the last few weeks and am frozen deciding whether to burn them to cd or upload to the ipod. Some of the shows are for an intro to bands I haven't heard (I See Hawks in LA, Mike Stinson, Devendra Banhart), and if I don't care for it, there's no need to have it on cd. If I do, I'd rather hear in it great quality, not mp3 on the ipod through the car. As a result, apart from listening to a few tracks on the computer, I haven't listened to any of it. Ridiculous. Which of the couple of Gram books, including the new one, is worth reading, if one were to read only one? The reviews of the new book say that while its a bio of Gram, it puts his life and music into a broader cultural and musical context, a perspective I like.

Dr. Dog is playing a sold-out show at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC on Friday, Nov. 9. I'm going to see Phil and Friends that night at the Nokia, but am bummed to miss Dr. Dog.
