  1. Strangers Almanac was my introduction to RA, though it would be some time before I knew who he was as opposed to the band collectively. I remember a guy at a party in 1997 telling me about Whiskeytown. Shortly thereafter, the band played live on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight radio show (http://www.engineerpaul.com/bands/pages/whiskeytown.html), and I was hooked. I caught the band at the Theater of the Living Arts in Philly in April 1998, and it remains one of the dozen or so shows in my top five. It's one of those times when an album struck me as something special and I was lucky to see that
  2. The cover of Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi is as Lite FM as it can possibly get. I've wondered whether the band refused to play on it and it's just Duritz, a drum machine, and computer.
  3. I heard a Pavement song from Crooked Rain in Bloomingdales yesterday (drawing a blank on the song). That was suprising, to say the least, considering I'd find it impressive to hear any Pavement played over the PA at before just about any concert.
  4. >Saw them at Radio City in '04; the first of two nights there. Hot, damn, were those good shows.
  5. >That '91 MSG run is pretty good - in fact, the 9/10 show with Branford is outstanding. Should have been a Dick's Pick imo. I was at that show as well - on Phil's side. There's a crisp soundboard recording of it on dimeadozen.
  6. >I am actually pleased to notice some Deadheads at the Wilco shows I've seen. There's a sizeable contingent of Phish fans at Wilco shows, as well.
  7. Louie - Great comments about McCoy, my all-time favorite on the keys. I mentioned him more as an "elder statesman," not as a similar stylist as OP, and I guess you and others are correct than he is not of OP's generation. Is Hank Jones still around? I know he recorded an album with Joe Lovano this year. And nice job keeping jazz alive on this site. Fans of Wilco and any other kind of even relatively improvisational music just need a little exposure to jazz to make the leap.
  8. I'm going to give this a try. Thanks for the hard work.
  9. >is anybody left? Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner.
  10. Any suggestions for a guitar for a toddler - I guess one of the 3/4 acoustic guitars?
  11. > have been trying to get into tom waits for a year now and it just isnt happening To oversimplify his career, his earlier years are cocktail-bar jazzy and starting in the 80s became much more experimental and perhaps less accessible. Try "Nighthawks at the Diner." If that doesn't do it for you, then, well, there are plenty of other bands to try.
  12. I've downloaded numerous shows over the last few weeks and am frozen deciding whether to burn them to cd or upload to the ipod. Some of the shows are for an intro to bands I haven't heard (I See Hawks in LA, Mike Stinson, Devendra Banhart), and if I don't care for it, there's no need to have it on cd. If I do, I'd rather hear in it great quality, not mp3 on the ipod through the car. As a result, apart from listening to a few tracks on the computer, I haven't listened to any of it. Ridiculous. I also tend to keep searching for new shows to download without stopping to enjoy the ones I've a
  13. Is it possible to post these mixes on ysi or rapidshare for anyone to download, rather than just one person?
  14. >didn't you read the article? Apparently I don't do well with opening sentences.
  15. >I doubt they will ever top Amorica Agreed. Great album. Their absolute career highlight is "Ballad In Urgency" > "Wiser Time." I caught them at the Orpheum Theater in March '95 from about 10th row center. I couldn't hear very well for a few days after that.
  16. Nice piece and congrats on its publication. How did you choose GloNo for publication?
  17. Playin' > UJB > Dew > UJB Reprise > Playin' Reprise 11/17/73 I just downloaded this show last night and a few other Nov. '73 shows. >Across 110th Street - Bobby Womack Huge song.
  18. Lucinda Williams recently did the same thing in NYC.
  19. >Anyone have a nice FLAC rip of this handy? No, but I've been listening to "Live 1973" all week: http://www.amazon.com/Live-1973-Parsons-Fa...s/dp/B0000033ZC
  20. Nice interview. Thanks for posting it.
  21. Which of the couple of Gram books, including the new one, is worth reading, if one were to read only one? The reviews of the new book say that while its a bio of Gram, it puts his life and music into a broader cultural and musical context, a perspective I like.
  22. Dr. Dog is playing a sold-out show at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC on Friday, Nov. 9. I'm going to see Phil and Friends that night at the Nokia, but am bummed to miss Dr. Dog.
  23. I completely agree with both of you. The guy's opinions drive me crazy.
