Wilco — 11 September 2016, San Francisco, CA (The Fillmore) [Night 5 of 5]

Well, that's awfully nice of you to say Sandy. For those keeping track at home, I'm now blushing... Honestly, I'm glad people seem to enjoy reading the random thoughts of a bleary-eyed dude usually written at some ungodly hour. Most of the time it's honestly a miracle they end up coherent at all. This past week was a lot of fun, spending a lot of time on the sidewalk with you and other friends and occasionally glimpsing some petty crime! Thanks for being a great unifier for a lot of people. You certainly helped us out-of-towners feel welcomed on your home turf! -

Crickets in here. Thanks for reading! -
Lest anyone influence the forthcoming recap one way or the other, I shall endeavour to put fingers to keyboard soon... OK, finally at said keyboard and ready to recount some memories from what turned into a terrific conclusion to a week of shows at the Fillmore. Take it from someone who's been fortunate enough to attend more than a fair share of Wilco shows: The historic venue at the corner of Fillmore Street and Geary Boulevard is one of the best places anywhere to see a show by this band — cozy, intimate, good-sounding, respectful, venerable and on and on (and on). Kudos to the Fillmore a

From where I stand, it's no small feat for a band to successfully pull off the balancing act of a five-night residency — particularly when that band is one like Wilco that has a new record to promote but also a devoted fanbase that expects to hear a variety of songs each night, from crowd pleasers to deep cuts. In coming up with a setlist, you have to change things up enough to satisfy those going to every show but you also can't necessarily make any one night vastly unique relative to another, lest you alienate fans who might only be able to attend one show. I bring this up because while I

The only ones the full band hasn't played are Common Sense, Quarters and Just Say Goodbye. -

As an (alleged) setlist pedant, I feel obliged to say that Summerteeth is technically the album and Summer Teeth the song. -

Yes, an unfortunate error on my part...about to be corrected. And are you saying I am a pedant? I resemble that remark! -
If you're any kind of self-respecting Wilco fan, you'd have to say that was a pretty fun night at the legendary Fillmore. On the day that Wilco Schmilco officially made its way out into the world, the band celebrated the release of its latest record with a performance that once again deftly mixed present and past, newer songs and deeper cuts, before building to a frenetic, raucous conclusion. It wasn't that the first two shows of Wilco's five-night Fillmore residency were necessarily subdued, but more that the third night really kicked things up a notch. Just when you expected Jeff and Co.

I prefer BOB. (Thanks for the kind words, Sandy! I guess eventually someone was gonna spill the beans, so I'm glad it was you. ) -

You must be referring to the bit of banter I forgot to mention in the above recap when a woman in the audience asked Jeff what his T-shirt (which he was wearing underneath a jacket) said. Jeff pulled open the jacket to reveal his frequently worn (of late) Ghost shirt and quipped, "Don't check them out; they're terrible. ... You wouldn't like them." Oh, and I also forgot to mention that the performance of Bull Black Nova (with a sort of hybrid acoustic arrangement — it was basically the electric arrangement but with Jeff on acoustic, as opposed to the way Jeff plays it solo acoustic) was very -

Thanks a lot, buddy. -
Well, what can I really say about this one? Apparently I keep track at home, go to a lot of shows, love Hummingbird and sing along, among other things... :ninja My own "role" notwithstanding, and hopefully it was good for a chuckle or three, Night 2 at the Fillmore was a relatively loose affair. Once again built around songs from the soon-to-be released Wilco Schmilco, the set also featured a number of different older songs than Night 1. Surely the set will be deemed not different enough by some out there in the peanut gallery (or God forbid, not having enough "bust outs") but I thought it

Omg, really? Are you the proverbial "asshole in Des Moines?" Jeff referenced in that recent Consequence of Sound interview? I mean they are showcasing songs from Wilco Schmilco, so I suspect the shell of the sets are gonna be pretty similar, but they've definitely opened up the repertoire quite a bit the past few shows (and will probably continue doing so in SF). What were you expecting, exactly? Yeesh. -

Do tell! (But take your time because I'm going back to bed.) I guess you probably did like SF quite well despite the foot labor required (and not resting on your laurels). I know the San Franciscans we both know eagerly await your return...saw a few of them last night! -

Parking this thread for now...with comments to come. OK, just for Herr Tatlock (and whomever else might be interested), here are le promised comments... Well, another Wilco residency is upon us — the first of this length that the band has ever done outside of Chicago, I'm pretty sure — and, as usual, it will be highly interesting to see how this one turns out after getting a baseline of sorts on Night 1. While there might not necessarily be quite as much variety this time, given the likely showcasing of songs from Wilco Schmilco each night, it should nonetheless feature a number of tunes

I wasn't there myself, unfortunately, but it looks like the stripped-down Schmilco tour is officially underway! Will be interesting to see how things evolve. Perhaps someone who was there can report more on the stage setup (a picture that was sent to me showed Glenn, Mike and Pat all playing without their usual risers, for example, and that big cabinet amp that Jeff has used the past year is gone — as expected). Anyway, from a photo of the printed setlist, it looks like here's what was played (yay Pick Up The Change!): If I Ever Was A Child Cry All Day Misunderstood The Joke Explained Someon

Yep. You can email me at thevalet [at] gmail .

Not publicly, to my knowledge. Jeff has played it during at least one living room show.

In an average month how much do you listen to Wilco?

Those, and comedy podcasts, are the new indie rock. -
Wilco - 30 August 2016, Salt Lake City, UT (Red Butte Garden)
bböp replied to nalafej's topic in After The Show
Yeah, I was kinda secretly hoping for that big cabinet to go away because when you're on the John/Pat side, you can forget Mike is even up there! Thanks for the reporting. You always seem to make it to the Red Butte/SLC show...do you have family out there or anything? Just wondering. Anyway, I won't be able to make it until SF on this run so it'll be interesting to see what happens the next couple of nights. I don't know the Boise venue, but if it's outside like Red Butte, I'm guessing a similar show to this one. Then Seattle and Portland, which are indoors, should be interesting... -
This thread, and all of people's reactions not even to the new record itself but just *the reviews of the new record*, make me understand why Jeff so enjoyed the way Star Wars was released. Yeesh!
