  3. Whenever I see the name Bill Evans, I of course immediately think of the great pianist. I wonder if Nels is a fan... Wasn't aware of the contemporary saxophonist Bill Evans, but I have to say that it's gotta be somewhat tough being a jazz musician with that name.

  5. You're more than welcome to one of my crappily hand-scrawled ones next show we attend together...
  6. He'd probably play that, too, considering I've seen him there on more than a few occasions... As for the Big Star Third tribute, I have to think he's going to be doing You Can't Have Me. Wish I could be there. Awesome show, though I wonder how much of a shitshow it's going to be at SXSW (probably a big one).
  7. No, there wasn't a support act for this show. I think Scarlett O'Hanna, who had opened most of the dates on this European run, was originally slated to support in Zagreb as well but I guess she couldn't make it. So this turned into "An Evening With Wilco" perhaps helping to account for the longer setlist... And great to see you as always, Heike! Definitely hope to see you next time as well!
  8. Well, an 11-song encore...that's how you make a lot of new fans in a place you've never played before, I guess! Hell of a Croatian debut. I have to admit, I had my doubts when they moved the venue for the show from a club to a random hangar-like building that's part of a vast trade fair complex (apparently one of the largest 11 fairgrounds in the world). Suffice it to say that the place was pretty big, and I guess it hadn't hosted a concert in recent memory. Also, there was virtually no way that the sound was going to be pristine in that place. I'm sure the Wilco sound team did its best, an
  9. Yeah, sorry you missed that one. You´ll just have to come to Italy next time...
  10. Thanks for kind words! However, I should have clarified in my post that they just did a couple of bars of Born Alone without Jeff and Pat and then stopped and did the whole song properly from start to finish. Didn't mean to be misleading, although that would have been even cooler if they did an instrumental version...haha.
  11. Apologies to the handful of you who might care for the delay in posting last night's setlist — and thank you kindly, Bologna airport, for having free WiFi. I don't know if I really have that much insight to offer on this show, and I'm certainly not operating at 100 percent brainpower at the moment, but I can confirm that it was another fun Italian show. To start off, I have to give credit to the Italian crowds the past two nights. Obviously this is a total overgeneralization on my part, but judging purely from what I saw, they're willing to line up (pretty) early, are enthusiastic and both r
  12. While it may be named after a prison and sort of looked like one from the outside, the Alcatraz turned out to be a pretty cool rock club. Certainly it was one that Mr. Tweedy couldn't seem to get enough of, joking at one point that the band was "glad to be in front of a real crowd. It's freaking us out. We're used to people sitting (in other countries)." He also proclaimed tonight's crowd the best of the tour so far. Of course he quickly backtracked, saying that he didn't mean to insult anyone who had come from another country. Then inevitably, someone yelled out, "Chicago!" really loudly an
  13. Quite a lively show tonight at the Volkshaus, a place that the band have played a couple of times previously. Jeff mentioned on several occasions that it was "nice to be back." And even though he only said a couple of other noteworthy things, like pointing out someone he noticed who seemed to put their earplugs in whenever he picked up a guitar and pointing out Glenn's Swiss-themed wristbands before goading him into standing on his drum stool before I'm The Man Who Loves You, the crowd pretty much seemed totally into it from the start. I clocked the show at 2 hours and 9 minutes, which I thi
  14. Oh, and not to respond to my own thread, but I wasn't sure if it was worth starting another separate thread for the Autumn Defense in-store that John and Pat played down the road a bit just a couple of hours before taking the stage with Wilco, so I'll just put it here... As an unamplified acoustic duo, they did seven songs for about 40 people packed into a cool little record store called Boutique Fargo in the 11th arrondissement. Not sure if the AD had played Paris before — I think maybe once — but anyway, it was a nice intimate setting to hear a few of their tunes. Their setlist was: Th
  15. Working with kind of a spotty Internet connection, so I'll hold off on making too many comments for now, but suffice it to say that Le Grand Rex is indeed grand. In the sense of big, or at least big feeling. It's normally a movie theater, I guess, though it apparently does host its share of concerts as well. But it's a weird place for a show, I have to say. Most of the seats on the main floor anyway are made of leather and are as comfortable as a recliner — even Jeff said that they might be the most comfy chairs ever at a rock concert. So given that, and just the kind of subdued sort of feel
  16. Just to add a few more thoughts about the show... As usual, the band made it more than worthwhile to see both nights of a two-night stand by significantly changing up their setlist from Night 1. Someone told us not to expect too many changes, but from the show-opening Reservations on, we knew we were in for a different type of show from the previous night. The only negative for me is that Jeff's vocals were pretty muddy-sounding from right up front, but hopefully it sounded better toward the middle and back of the room. But all in all, it was a much looser show than Night 1. Jeff bantered
  17. Night 2 in Bruxelles...just the setlist for now, maybe more comments later.... 18. A pretty solid set for Night 1 in Bruxelles. Jeff didn't really have much to say, but that seems almost par for the course thus far on this European run. Perhaps he'll be a little more verbose on Night 2, or at least hopefully we'll get a decent bit of variety in the selection of songs... Always great to see some familiar faces, and to meet some new friends as well! Here was the complete setlist, as played: One Sunday Morning> Poor Places> Art Of Almost I Might At Least That's What You Said IATTBYH> One Wing Bull Black Nova Black Moon Spiders (Kid
  19. I liked the very brief looks on Mike's and John's faces toward the end that said, "Wow, I can't believe this interview is still going on."
  20. The shows did seem to get a little bit more publicity this year than previous years. Also the price point was much lower to start this year, so that probably had something to do with it as well. It is a little weird, though, that the scalper issue had never seemed to rear its ugly head with these shows too much before. You almost wish they could somehow keep it under the radar a little bit, but of course they want to sell as many tickets as possible to raise as much money as possible. Just sucks that there are so many opportunists looking to make a quick buck off shows that are BENEFITS!
  21. I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but I know he has been working with a cool group of Chicago teenagers called Kids These Days. Here's a brief AV Club story about him producing their upcoming record.
  22. Sponsored (in part) by Hillco! That guy was a pretty good interviewer, I have to say. Obviously being a fan helps. He seemed sort of like a hipper version of Charlie Rose.
  23. Well, Spencer (Tweedy) wrote on his blog that Sir Paul told John (Stirratt) about staying up to watch the ACL appearance. I bet Pat (Sansone) was somewhere around, too, considering he loves McCartney.
  24. I should add that the rest of the show was fun as well... One the most amusing parts for me came when the band started to play Born Alone only to very quickly realize that something was not right. I'm far from a guitar expert, but I assume that the guitar Jeff was handed for that song was in the wrong tuning because he stopped playing and then had to hand it over to his guitar tech for either a quick re-tune or another guitar in the right tuning (I didn't see which). But in the interim, Jeff sort of had to do some ad-libbing at the mike and that's always kind of awkward. This time the rest
